Hi everyone I'm new to the site, me and my family will be moving to the Luke AFB area from Alaska in August. I drive a 92YJ and need to know what kind of tires I need to purchase for wheeling down there? currently I'm running a 3'' lift and 33's. fully rhino-lined tub, ARB front end, and detroit no spin in the rear.
thanks in advance

Most of the guys here run Goodyear MT/R's or BFG Mt's, but thats just a small list that could go on and on.
More concern I have for someone moving HERE in AUGUST from Alaska.. Man, are you in for it! Hope your YJ has air conditioning! :)

LOL yeah its gonna be hot but we PCS'd here from New Mexico and I grew up in south FL so heat is gonna be an adjustment but my Jeep doesnt need AC. I'll just yank the top down pull the drain plugs and run through a car wash LOL. sweet that basically what everyone runs up here besides me. lol I'm running thorn-turds at the moment just cause when I bought my jeep those were on it, they suck in snow but havnt had an issue with them other than deep snow (trench diggers) cant wait to get down there and hit some trails. it'll be nice to be topless most of the year without freezing.
heres a few pics of my baby

Cool, when you get here we'll hit the trails. I'm not in the military any more but live on the same side of town as Luke. The planes fly over my house on their approach lanes. There are a ton of trails out here and this is a good club. Always somebody willing to go out and run the trails.

Those tires look ok, I'm not familiar with "Thorn-turds", but snow won't be a problem here. :D
Your jeep may not need A/C, but you definitely will, Florida and New Mexico ain't got nothing compared to Arizona. If you think taking your top off here is a solution, think again. You will be fried in a mile! SHADE is your only hope!
Stay in touch, I'm just down the street from Luke, have lived out here forever. Be glad to show you around if you survive the transition. :D

Yeah I also used to live in southern florida and AZ's heat is totally different (better in my opinion). I recently moved to AZ down from Washington, man first place I've gone where nobody runs super swampers :D You gotta love the offroading out here though, anyway are you a pilot? We fly out of Williams Gateway, just a hop skip and an approach away from you guys :D :D

Well I guess I should clearify, I was born & raised in WA but we vacationed in the clear water beach area. I say I used to live there because we went every year and stayed for several months. Great area! I'll never forget the tropical storms down there.

If your ears can handle the noise, the thornbirds will be fine for most of AZ's wheeling spots, except perhaps during snow-wheeling season:eek: :D ...
PS: Don't listen to the nay-sayers... If you can handle Florida and NM weather, you'll be just fine here...;)
Oh yeah...Welcome aboard:) ;)

I'm active duty and just got back from Iraq in November........since you have "been there and done that" the AZ heat is no biggie.....as for tires and mods on rigs here....I havea 92 XJ with a 4.5" lift and 31 inch Mickey Thompson MTZ.....no sweat so far. There is a mountain range right "outside" of Luke to the west called White Tanks.......mild to wild runs there. Drop me a line when you get here....we go out EVERY chance we get. Went out today and the son grenaded BOTH his front upper control arms! ......nice video!!!
Welcome to AZ an Luke AFB.

welcome! i will welcome you to az when you get here :D lots of great people on the site and lots of friends will be made. and my opinion for your tires are keep them they look pretty tough when they are bald and done for upgrade to some goodyear mts or bfg mt's. What type of wheeling are you into? wild, mild, or the easy senic trails?

personally I like mild to wild. never did rocks though. lots of mud and off camber situations make me HAPPY. but if I have my little one with me (6yr old and a 2 yr old) the baby can be an issue on trails that get rough he doesnt like it so with him we'd be sight seeing. but my daughter loves the rough wheeling. the best was our last run up here before snow hit she was my co-pilot and we were coming down a steep downgrade and you have to **** a tire up on a rock and the other tire is hangign off the mountain. she just looks at me and says "mommy if we fall off the mountain we'll DIE" that was the best line ever but it was a blast.

Hi welcome to the board and sunny Az. My wife and i moved out here almost 3yrs ago and the hardest thing on our cars/Jeep/motorcycle was the heat. You might want to buy a new radiator before you get here. Or at the very least flush and change fluids and add a bottle or 2 of water wetter, helps kepp teh temp down.
You'll find the greatest group of people on here!!!
BTW I'm also a few miles from Luke on the west side of town.

Welcome, don't buy new tires just yet. Those look just fine until proven otherwise. Just air down for the rocks and sand and you're good to go. Different terrain here, and you will have fun, keep the top on the jeep, you will want the shade. Don't go out in the desert alone, someone will always go with you if you let us know.

The radiator should be fine unless you've made some mods that require additional cooling, or it's lost some efficiency due to plugging or ?? In that event you'll know soon enough that an upgrade or repairs are needed...;)
PS: Macinyart, gave some GREAT advice relative to the shade, and not going out alone... I'll just add a couple more thoughts...
- ALWAYS let folks know where you are going and when to expect you back.
- ALWAYS carry in your vehicles, at least one gallon of potable water.
- If you do break down or get stuck, and for some reason happen to be alone (no spare vehicles to send for help), STAY WITH YOUR VEHICLE UNTIL FOUND. It's WAY easier for trackers to track a vehicle than your foot prints, and you WILL get found a WHOLE lot faster.:) ;)
Bottom line is that the summer heat, coupled with the remotemess of some of the places we play when wheeling, can be a deadly combination if you do not treat it with the respect it deserves...:o ;)

Welcome (in advance) to AZ!!!
We (including my 3 girls...2@ 6yrs, 1@ 8yrs) look forward to jeeping with you. Beth (6yrs) really loves jeeping... for her 6th bday, she wanted to go jeeping... she got to drive (ok I worked the pedals, mostly the skinny one:D )... painted the Jeep brown (MUD).
I think it is funny how when people hear AK, they think COLD. How long have you been in AK / is this "perminant" move to AZ or just re-post?

ob1 the only reason i said to get a new radiator is after 15 years there might be some gunk built up in there. I didnt have any issues with my car or wife's in NY, get on the road and the temp hits 118 and the road has to be at least 130's and the temp gauge climbed right up. The ECU also got so hot it shorted out and would leave us stalled.I heard that there is a cooling package they use on cars in teh south west or hot areas. I'd like to see how a car from here would do in -10 covered in ice?????

Welcome! It sounds like you guys will fit in with this bunch ok. As for a top, I
suggest at least a bikini or Safari top for summer. I am sure from living in AK,
you know the do's and don'ts of travel in the wild. I lived in the Phoenix area
most of my younger years, but have lived in the eastern mountains of Arizona
for the last 26 years. Great wheeling around the state and a lot to see.
P.S. Thanks you and your husband for your work toward keeping us free. :D

yeah we know all about the wheelin in the wild rules. up here we tend to even go off the GPS grids (its neat looks like you fell off the face of the planet) do ya'll run CB or FRS????? we run FRSs' up here just cause they dont mind the x-treme temps. up here we have to prepare for a whole different kind of temp, but it seems as the list for heat is the same for cold. also I run a best top sunrider so its easy to let the air in and then just flip the front back down when we get toasty. gonna buy a safari and half doors down there. this isnt going to be a perm. move its just a PCS so we'll be there 3 or so years. my hubby will also be scouting for people for us to go out on our crotch rockets with if any of ya'll ride?

Hey, I am also an active duty member at luke and just moved out of housing when I left for Iraq. Luckly I'll be returning this summer. June July time. But, TLF does have pet friendly houses. About the same price for the rooms but it is one of the older houses. 3 bed, fenced back yard. The works. Well at least they were still there when I left at Thanksgiving. Should still be there. Hope this helps you out.
