There is an LTD in the north end of the wash that leads into cove one... its burried axle deep in sand and has a bunch or really large rock in the cabin area...
Shnipe and I are looking to attempt an extraction Friday March 2. This is a big ole thing and its not burned out, so its likely full of gas. I'm not sure we can get it out with just our rigs and could probably use a hand... A couple of rigs with winches would be a plus, especially for getting it pulled to the top of the firs hill...
We'll also need a clean up crew to lend a hand in getting any spills and misc parts picked up...

I can't be out there until about 1PM... I get done work around 11:30 or so and it takes me bout 45 to get there... If we get enough coordination and help, you can probably pull it off without my dumb arse being there anyway... I'm not good for much outside of the occasional joke as it is... when I get out there if the pig is still in the ground I'll jump in there... if not, I'll jump into the the clean up crew...

just some thoughts/questions:
Did you think I would miss out on the fun? Is there a reason is planned for friday (instead of Saturday when more people could attend)?
are there tires/wheels on this ship?
why do you think this will be harder than the explorer extraction?
for post extraction removal, I have always just contacted Tonto forest and they usually have wrecker out within a day or so (as opposed to whoever is incharge of TM, where it takes 2-7 weeks to remove the crap we pick up:mad: )

Looking at the picture more closely, I don't think there is a chance in Yuma you will find either a 8.25 or 9" under that thing....
IT'S AN OSMOBILE!!!!
that's a GM airconditioning compressor, GM grille
best guess a 1984ish Delta 88 Royale, probably Brougham... most came with a OHV 5.0, 4bbl carb

Its an OLDMOBILE. I doubt it would have either a ford or chrysler rear end in it, Besides, we dont strip vehicles, we remove them. Its not our property, so its still theft. Besides it most likely has a 7.5" 10 bolt in it. Ewwww.

BTW, where did you get your vin search (hope you didn't pay for it:eek:  ). As I have said before, via experience Carfax and several of those services are about as usefull as a Chiltons manual.... when you're stuck in the middle of nowhere and have tried everything else, they come in very handy.... for starting a fire!!! I have received 3 highly erroneous reports from carfax (including a van from the loss recovery section of Hertz leasing they told us had never been in an accident or ever leased:eek: ). The only good thing I can say for them is they refunded their fees (3 times) when I called them on their misreporting ( which they would have never done for my Grand Cherokee without the admission I eventually got when I confronted the prior owner ( rep. Jeff Flake....I actually trusted an "upstanding, bible thumping public servant"  donno much that could make me feel more stupid:mad: )

For those that arrive late:
Go through the green gate. Follow the wash back for about one mile veering to the right. Climb the first hill after the right fork and continue again. Fork to the right again when the road forks again. Continue along this route until you drop into the wash (you can see the lake from the top of the hills) Then go LEFT and continue up the wash.
Jack or Junk can you comment on how far up the wash the car is? Anyone have GPS coords that they can toss up of the first wash for those with GPS.

N 33 36 02.8
W 111 29 48.7
These numbers from my first post (unidentified there) represent the approximate position of the car in GPS talk.
It is so easy to find that I found it the first try.
Go north from the Green Gate, bear to the right at the old fence that is at the foot of the first minor hill. That little wash gets a bit narrow, but there is no danger of rolling anywhere. Proceed up that wash, generally north till you see the first hill on your right, (there is a makeshift stake stuck in a little washout there, ) then go up that first hill to the right to the top,( go all the way to the top) then turn left (north) again. I found it by going to the main play area that is on both sides of the wash that goes down to the first cove. This takes you past the mudhole. Dropped into the wash, turned left (north) and stayed to the left. About a half mile up the wash I found the car.
I am planning to make the 0900 meet time with bags, grabbers, buckets, shovels and time to stay until asked to leave.
Steve is right, the hill seen in the photo (looking roughly south) might be the best bet to drag that puppy out of there. At least two of the tires are flat from gunshots.
Has anyone been able to confirm that the car is abandoned or simply stolen and not found yet? For some reason this sounds important.
Looking forward to seeing you guys out there. Don't worry about the later arrival times, I'm sure this is not going to be as easy as pulling vans out of Dixileta Wash, hey. :)

to find it on the way in, it is the second right turn (after that little tiny washout crack that hardly anyone  ever rolls over in:D :D )
if you go the normal way (which leads to big play area into 2nd big wash leading to lake), after entering the wash is about 172.54 yards down wash, look for the little hill 90deg to wasy (someone left an osmobile to mark it for you:eek: )

PLEASE DO NOT "CLAIM IGNORANCE LATER"......... A black mark against OHV is a black mark any way you look at it. Whether we like it or not there are procedures and we must respect them. I have NEVER had a problem with sheriff dept. helping us with disposal instructions and they have always thanked us for VIN #'s and vehicle info. It enables them to close a lot of files they wouldn't normally be able to do.
I just tried contacting Art Wirtz, Mesa District Ranger, but I believe he's out of town with a Region 3 Leadership Meeting. Contact the sheriff for stolen vehicle report or disposal procedures. There's absolutely nothing wrong with wanting to get these burned or abandoned vehicles out and off the lands but it must be done via proper procedures. If the sheriffs dept. has this vehicle logged as stolen they then notify the insurance company. If sheriff dept. then tells you they don't want to be involved in disposal and you have a plan for disposal you could probably do whatever but you have to have the means to haul it OUT as well as a place to take it to. Most junk yards etc will not accept it without a notice/clearance from the sheriff regarding stolen or not.

Thanks Sandee,
I am in the process of clearing this with MCSO and the FS. I spoke with a MCSO deputy who will check this out and get back to me. I have a message left with the FS, but as of noon, no response. I agree that is better to go out there prepared with legal sanction than to try to talk our way out of trouble. I described to the deputy where it is and he says he is going to take his Expedition out there in a little while and call me back later today. He told me that vehicles were a lot different than just hauling trash out. Also he said, the next time we find a car out there to call him, he likes to four wheel out there. He will run the VIN against the stolen list and try to find the registered owner and let me know. I will post up again for the group later today hopefully. We all want that thing out of there.

Might suggest we start a "contact list" of persons/numbers to contact to help us through a proper process. I know we come across these issues every time we go out........ make a plan.

Since this is a vehicle and not just trash I contacted MCSO. The response that I have now is that a deputy will meet with me at 0900 at the green gate. (As far as I know I don't have a rap sheet.) I was not told that we couldn't do this so as far as I am concerned it is definite go. The deputy that I spoke with earlier today was not at all negative. They want the same things we do and I think the thrust is that we just need to do it with the proper sanctions so we don't have to "ask forgiveness" (see Sandee's posts) later. I just wish I could have gone out there with deputy and his Expedition to see how it did on the trail. I am going out there in the morning and plan to at least pick up the small stuff around the wreck in preparation for the afternoon arrival of those who have said they would be there. I expect to meet the deputy at the gate while airing down. I am told that all the deputies on the Lake section drive Expeditions. This should be fun stuff. So let's see you all out there. Still no email response from FS?

junkie did you post this before you read sandees post?
Maybe I miss read her last post... She had spoken to sosmeone who was reading the thread but I didn't take that as an approval to move forward. It sounds like jack has someone coming out to meet him there at 9...
I can't be out there before 1 so I'll try to catch up with everyone then... I haven't heard from Shnipe in a couple of days and I'm honestly not sure where the "ultimate" resting place of this thing is supposed to be...
Lets just be sure we have our butts covered... I don't have a good sense right now of what rigs we have, who has winches or where we are dropping the rig and who is picking it up from there. I'd feel better if we had more input from FS other than someone is meeting us at the gate.
See you this afternoon...

WOW! I mentioned this way back, message #10, and you all still haven't got the proper authorities OK yet? Geez people!
well I don't think its for lack of trying, but it kind of feels that way and I'm not sure how confident I feel about attempting this right now without some kind of approval...

Update on the Oldsmobile in the wash.
Robin Thees (sp) Tease (sp) is a ranger with the FS. She will meet me at 0900 at the Green Gate. My information at this point is that the vehicle is not stolen, Robin says therefore we don't need the MCSO and she will deal with it. This is my first contact with the FS. I emailed Jason S in the Mesa office a couple of days ago and made the suggestion that we get it to the upstream area of the gate and they would take it from there. I have heard nothing to the contrary yet and expect Robin to confirm this point this morning. She called here yesterday and left a message ( I will meet with Jack at the gate at 0900) with my wife and I think that if we were in trouble with this plan that Robin would have told us that rather than, I will meet you at the gate in the morning. So, let us soldier on and pull that thing out. I plan to have most of the small stuff and general debris collected before noon.

okay... maybe they were just looking for some cheap long term parking... I wonder how that affects the extraction legality... I'm so confused... which of course has nothing to do with this... but it doesn't help damit!!!
What if the car is out of state... would it still show on that sight? Thanks for the link by the way!!

Here are some of the images from the removal of the Oldsmobile from Butcher Jones.
We tried to take the vehicle up the first hill, didn't work. Pulled it down to the first play area and were successful in pulling it up with YJUNK in the lead. Russ hooked to the car. Pulled it all the way out to the pavement beyond the green gate. FS was present, Robin, to make sure all went well.

Awesome guys, wish I could have been there to help out. God knows there unfortunatly is many more cars out in the desert, so we will have to make this a regular thing and get these things out of our wheeling areas!
BTW, nice tires Daniel!! Your Jeep looks mean now, instead of like Junkys head.....Bald!! :D

Three members of the crew, Russ, Glen and I think Daniel went back out the second cove area to check on another vehicle that has been there for a while. I trust they will post up when they get back in town?

I showed up as they were leaving with the car on the flatbed, didn't see anyone though, except glens XJ sitting empty on the trail.
Then went in, up and over to the second ridge, no problem, coming back, took a steeper line up to the first ridge to the right, and learned something I woulda liked to know before, my front driveshaft is a bit short!!!! right at the crest of the hill pulled itself out of the splines, and started flopping around.
Fortunatly no damage, but it got a bunch of dirt on it, and I didn't have stuff to clean it up, so I tied it up out of the way, and made my way out in 2wd. knock on wood nothing broke.

We hunted around and found the remains of the Chevy Blazer in the cove 2 wash right where Glen and I had remembered. Totally stripped. No motor, axles, top, gas tank... nothing.
Daniel and I tandem strapped and pulled it up out of the wash. We pulled until Daniel's strap broke. I didn't pull any further alone as I'd developed some transmission noises I need to look into. So I pulled it off the side of the road. It now resides a few hundred yards before you get to the rock with a "2" on it leading towards cove 2.
Ranger Robin has been called and told what we did. I'm sending a pic of the VIN tag to her tonight and she'll run it. If it's abandoned it'll be an easy recovery. If it's stolen it's now easy to find so MCSO can easily get to it.
BTW all, Robin also reiterated her appreciation for all the effort today. I sure had a great time. It was fun to hook up with guys I hadn't seen in a while and, as always, great to meet some for the first time.

Thanks for all your help today gang; that actually went pretty smooth...
Russ, really appreciate you pulling that pig all the way out; I hope we didn't cook your tranny... that car would be a bit much for a jeep to tow if it was on a trailer, much less diggin trenches down the wash for a couple of miles.
I ended back out at jones tonight and played around for several more hours... good times...

I took a few pics today but I did not get any video this time. Great job today guys! Even with some standing around scratching our heads, and an aborted attempt up the first hill, we still got that car to the parking lot in about 3 hours. :) It makes a huge difference when it still has wheels underneath! I grabbed a hammer and prybar and busted the column open so we could put it in neutral. Russ was the powerhouse today with his Rubicon locked front and rear and YJunk hooked ahead of him for most of the way. The rest of us trailed and collected debris that fell off and general trash all along the way. Great day - it is always a good time on cleanups! We had 7 rigs total plus Robin, the Forest Service LEO who came out to join us today. She mentioned a number of times how appreciative the FS is of our volunteer cleanup work and thanked us for todays efforts. She was a great person to have along - very friendly and informative and truly motivated to be there, sharing the same goals we strive for in keeping the areas clean and safe. She also gave us her contact information for future activities and expressed a desire to work with us more. She also said she owns a Jeep but it needs some work. Here are the pics I took today:

Might suggest we start a "contact list" of persons/numbers to contact to help us through a proper process. I know we come across these issues every time we go out........ make a plan.
Thanks guys..........
Sandee hate to bust on you or anything like that but robin asked that you please remove her number from your post since it is her person number and not a work number

Just for future reference; if anyone wants to plan one of these again (and you didn't write Robin's number down) we have it. So feel free to contact me or Glenn or DJ or Russ or me or David or me or Jack... you get it. I finally feel like we have a good contact for that area (thanks Sandee) who really appreciates the fact that we're willing to help.
On a side note... we didn't have to make any arrangements for the tow truck etc; robin took care of that... she was just thankfull to get it out there where it could be picked up. She honestly made the process pretty easy; all we had to do was find someone willing to smoke their transmission in the process... By the next time we do this I should have my 4:1 gears in so I should have a little more grunt; its almost like addiing another squirl to the spinning wheel.

Junky:
The way I see it, just an installment on the cost of playing. :D
BTW, it doesn't appear to have smoked. Works normally in 2WD and 4HI. Loud clunking noises when shifting between Reverse - Neutral - Forward in 4LO. Unusual symptom for an auto tranny problem. Daniel and Glen crawled underneath and located the noise to the tranny pan while we were out running.
I'll get it into the shop on jackstands this weekend and isolate the issue. My hunch is that it's nothing too big.
