Dear fellow jeep owners. I am posting a copy of a letter that I sent to Auburn gear regarding a problem I am having with my ected locker installed in a dana 30 axle. The people at Auburn have been no help at all, I have called left messages and sent e-mails. If anyone has any idea what could be going on with my locker, I would love to hear your input.
Thanks
Let me describe the symptoms, it is a rattleing noise that changes with wheel speed
It does this on decelaration or coasting only.
It does not do it on acceleration or turning left or right.
Now your thinking, it's the axle u joint or a bad bearing. We thought the same thing. We checked, everything is nice and tight. We removed the front driveshaft took it for a drive noise was still there. I took the diff cover off yesterday and noticed the keeper that holds the magnet in place had shifted slightly and the magnet rattled. Readjusted the keeper, put it back together it still made the noise.
Here is why I think it has something to do with the locker itself. As I said it makes the noise on decel or coasting and stops in a turn. So what I did was turn on the front locker driving straight in 2wd. After a few moments the rattle disappeared. I then turned the locker off and the sound was still gone. I drove for almost 40 miles without making a turn in stop and go traffic the rattle never came back. I exited off the ramp turned left, heard a faint pop, as soon as the wheel straightened the rattle came back. I have repeated this experiment 4 or 5 times, turning left and right with the same results. The only variable is if I leave the locker on I can make a turn as long as it is a wide turn straighten out no noise. I have been trying to get through to someone at Auburn about this and can't get an answer. The locker was installed about 4 months ago and hopefully should still be under warranty. I will call Auburn again today and ask for you, hopefully you will have time to read this, and can think of a solution to the problem.
This is my letter to Auburn, as of today I have had no response from them. And what really pisses me off here, is if the unit is bad I am going to have to pay someone to pull the unit, send it to Auburn, wait on them, and then pay someone to put it back in. I do not have the expertise or the tools to do something like this. The guy who did my install works a new job and doesn't have time to help me out.
Thanks
