View Full Version : Hand throttles.....

I pieced together a cheap hand throttle for the Heep last year...ended up the sheath was kinked, so it kept holding the throttle open at stoplights...so I had to cut it off...(side of the road thing)...

So Im getting ready to redo it with BRAND new sheath and cable..and a new shifter....I now some have em and some dont...but I saw this and thought it was pretty cool....

and otherside...

http://i116.photobucket.com/albums/o19/4130jeeptj/jeeppics017.jpg

its a grip shift style shifter...instead of a thumblever like I currently have..the guy says it works really good...

Thought Id share the idea...

I like it !! who's making it ??

GripShift...its a mountain bike shifter...it looks like you'd remove the shift knob and slide it over like it would slide on a handlebar...tighten and reinstall the knob...

Looks homebrew with the grip shifters instead of the levers.

question?? do auto's benefit from having a hand throttle as well? reason why i ask is i have an auto (yeah yeah) works great but manuals out crawl me (even and smooth) everytime i hit a friggin rock my foot gets pushed into the gas pedal so i just got back and fourth!! anysuggestions, beside learn to drive! lol

heres whatcha do....

use your brake and throttle at the same time...to slow you and get you over stuff...also...if its bumpy...find the proper speed..and push your foot INTO the transmission hump....not the gas pedal...takes a minute to get used to...but it keeps you steady..

and auto is way better for crawlin...I think anyway...

yeah i think so to i've seen to many people stall or loose control rolling back cause of a stal or something of that nature! i do the brake and gas pedal manuever, and have a huge bare metal spot on trans hump from pushing on that with gas pedal foot but just not as smooth and even it seems as others! didnt know if a hand throttle would benefit at all!

That's a nice setup, Brad. If my old-school throttle ever goes south I may try that method...

That's a great idea and I like it much better than the 1970 Schwinn 10 speed lever.

I've read Stu's write-up on the Kwan Motorsystems controller http://www.stu-offroad.com/recovery/twc/twc-1.htm and thought it could make a nice adition for crawling with an auto. Kwan's website says the latest version of their controller also has a load compensator to maintain a constant RPM under varying loads.

ya know an auto tranny makes the need for those kinda obsolete.

can you figure up the cost difference for me...?

Ive got $17 into hand throttle parts...figure 30 minutes of my labor = $17.00

:D yeah....little bit of a HUGE difference there ...LOL and an auto tranny doesnt hold the revs while winchin' now does it..?? :D

I got it from some guy on PBB for $10 shipped :)

He apparently has access to military scrap trucks and grabs them whenever he finds them. I'll try and find him. I recently deleted my PM box over there so I'll have to search and see if I can find him.

Don - his nick on PBB is "JSBriggs".

Here's the thread he'd posted in which prompted my PM to him about them...

http://www.pirate4x4.com/forum/showthread.php?t=554191

At the time he had a couple and sent me one for $10.
Give him a shout and see if he still has some.

Hey Brad, is the diameter of the shifter the same as a handlebar? Did frenchie get this for you, or are you getting it from someone over here on the west side?

Sorry, Not Brad, but no the diameter is not the same. You can just use a longer set screw to make it work, or you can get/make a spacer. I just did mine took about 15minutes to do. Heres a pic

OK, I guess I can wait. But how much discount can you get on a $10 part? Man, I tip more than that.

Jeff, your setup don't look as slick as Brad's does. It looks like Brad mounted his to the bottom of the knob. What's with that other gadget with all the wires coming off it?

actually....the pic I posted isnt mine...its the example I found online...

Ill post pics of mine...I got the gripshift section mounted...

instead of a larger set screw which will work nicely...I used a pc of hose...over the diameter of the shifter ...I also ground the edge (about 3/8) of the end of the knob to "fit" a little better down in the grip shift...then tightened the knob down, retightened the knob nut..:D Then....tightened the set screw....

pics to follow...
