If you have the rear axle shafts from an 80's or so XJ D35 c-clip, will
those shafts work in a D35 on a TJ?

Did you find a donor of a t-case drop yet? If not, let me know. I've got a 1" drop from a Rancho kit you can have. It's two rectangular sections that run the length of the skidplate vs. the 6 individual spacers you usually see. Have the extended bolts, too. It's yours if you want to come pick it up. I'm in East Mesa near Power and Baseline.

Hey Mike,
Did you use the transfer case drop kit that you bought from me? If not I'll
buy it back as the CJ we lifted this weekend has a driveline vibration and
needs some adjustment.

Subject: towing with a '93 ZJ

For spring break this year I am trying to get a friend to get ahold of
his dad's boat for a trip to Havasu (I know.. I know..) The only problem
is that we might not be able to use thier van to pull it. So, if my
girlfriend lets me, I was going to ask her if I could use her ZJ. It is
a '93 Limited 5.2L, full time 4x4, no lifts, no nuthin'. The boat is
3050 dry, and the trailer we estimate at 700lbs. I know the rating is
6500 on the jeep.. I just dont want the rear to sag permanently or
anything to break. So if anyone has ANY suggestions or comments, please
e-mail me.

p.s. I would be towing it from vegas to havasu and back, how is that
road, moutanous?

Thanks,

A couple of things with the SSR's. It takes a month or so to break 'em
in, that is loosen up the sidewalls and tread area so that they can
flex. Also, make sure you air them down enough. I run my 35's are 6 ~ 8
psi (needed 4 ~ 5 on H2H, but had 'em at 8).. They've got to be broken
in and aired down to flex and stick. Frankly in the last several years,
I haven't seen anything that will stick as well as the Swampers (SX's
and SSR's) when broken in and aired down enough.

Cheers,
Fred

ok so everyone as well as I have really never had anything bad to say about discount tire.

TODAY!!! this all changes. I take the g-friends jeep Grand in to get two fronts. ( too much weight and drives it like a porsche) so the right front is showing ALOT of steel.

We order the tires and leave to go eat. Phone call from discount 20 min later WOW THEY ARE FAST!! NO!!!

Due to the fact that the jeep is all whell drive they were instructed (after what was quoted as a recent payout for damages) THAT aLL wHEEL DRIVE VEHICLE MUST BUY ALL FOUR TIRES AT THE SAME TIME. Further more if six months down the road you have a flat and it cant be replaced you must replace all four. So atthe risk of telling this guy what an idiot he was and telling him that if we left the parking lot and the tire blew and we hit someone or something happended to us his company would SEEEE A LARGE PAYOUT BELEIVE ME!! he tells me sorry thats the dealers issue not ours. hmm I am tired and have no time SO.......

I tell him since the spare has been blown out that I want to just buy one for the spare and have him throw it in the back so I can have one when the tire goes.
HE TELLS ME HE CANT, becuase I will use it on the car, DUH!!!! my exact words. He tells me he doesnt need my verbal abuse. I ask him how safe the tire is that is on the car and if he would drive on it. ( he should have seen this coming) He says NO! its done. So I ask him If him and his company want to take the liability ( always a good word ) of letting me leave with not only a tire that they refuse to replace but also without a spare, which they refuse to supply us, in the event it blows.

I am telling him about how stupid it sounds not to put a spare on your car because it is allwheel drive. So To all of you with all wheel drive this is the BS you can expect now from these big companies.

Finally the guy told me he would sell me a spare if I promised not to put it on. So I said Yes and then HOW STUPID DOES THAT SOUND>

anyhow I now am at home getting ready to change out the tire and then drive to a different Tire store and get another SPAre that I will come home and also install.

Date: Mon Feb 25, 2002 0:22pm
Subject: RE: AArrrgg!! discount tire problem!!!

Eric,

In this case; the Discount employee did the right thing. You see; here's the problem:

If you have an all wheel drive vehicle, there is a potential for the differential tire diameter front to rear to cause binding in the transfer case assembly which could, in a worst-case scenario, result in damage to the vehicle.

I drive an all wheel drive, full time 4 wheel drive vehicle (The land cruiser) and the owner's manual specifically states that you MUST change all 4 tires at once or risk voiding your warranty.

If I was the employee at Discount tire, I would have made you sign and notarize a statement saying that the tire I sold you wouldn't be used on the vehicle in question.
You see Eric, a reasonable person would believe that you WOULD be using the spare on the all wheel drive vehicle, and because of this, REGARDLESS of what you said under the duress of the moment, Discount could be held liable for any damage caused to the vehicle.

If you were recently sued for picking your nose in public, you would probably be somewhat hesitant to pick it in public again... eh? Discount tire gets sued for damage to an all wheel drive vehicle and they send a notice out not to put mismatched tires on all wheel drive vehicles. I think this makes perfect sense and I don't believe that it is anything to get upset over.

You ask what the hell the world is coming to?

Can you spell LAWSUIT son?

It is exactly the same reason your to-go cup of coffee has a CAUTION HOT warning label on it and the fan shroud on your Jeep says CAUTION; DO NOT STICK YOUR FINGERS IN THE MOVING BLADE.

Joe

Subject: Dana 27 Closed Knuckle Questions

I am rebuilding D27 Axle and have a few questions. The Haynes manual describes a parts in this order (hub to differential) spindle - bushing - thrust washer - axle pilot - oil seal. the hub end of the axle shaft passes through all of these. Bill 2 Four Wheel Supply informed me you fill (3/4) the closed knuckle with axle grease. Is this true? if so why? all that is in the axle is knuckle is the ujoint? is it to lubricate the u-joint and if so why are so many of the u-joint not enclosed? Can I buy replacement u-joints that don't require bearing grease all over them? I thought the gear oil in the differential was NOT limited to just the differentail but there is a seal to keep the gear oil in the differential. In this case could I eliminate all the oil/grease/lubricate in closed knuckle?
Bill also said the manual he was looking at didn't have the thrust washer and axle pilot. Do I need both of these?

It is a very simple trail. A stock vehicle should have no problems
with it. It is a short trail also. Watch for the pink Jeeps. SOme
of them are pricks and will tell you that you cant wheel there. It
is total crap. They just dont like having other jeeps on the trail.
They haul but through so that they can get as many trips as possible
done in one day.
