HI-TECH JEEPS

DOS Jeep

Requires you to install your own panel indications, and that you read the
directions carefully before opening the door. Originally only came with an 8
gallon gas tank, but now comes with a 16 gallon tank. The tank can be divided
into eight compartments of 2 gallons each, which have to be accessed
separately. Soon to be discontinued, although a lot of people are going to
keep
driving it after it's no longer available.

Macintosh Jeep

At first came only with a 16 gallon tank, but now comes with a 32 gallon tank.
Considered by many to be a "Real Jeep". All the Jeeps look identical. When you
open the door, it starts itself. Owners manuals are not available. If you call
to ask about the maintenance, you are told that "you don't need to know."

Windows 3.1 Jeep

The world's most popular Jeep. Comes with a 16 gallon tank and looks a lot
like
Mac Jeeps. Requires that you previously owned a DOS Jeep. Claims that it
allows
you to run several accessories previously available on DOS Jeeps
simultaneously, but in reality you can only run a few of them, very slowly,
especially slowly if you are running the Windows Jeep accessory at the same
time. Sometimes, for no apparent reason, a Windows Jeep will die, requiring
that all passengers exit and reenter the Jeep.

OS/2 Jeep

Comes with a 32 gallon tank. Does allow you to run several DOS Jeep
accessories
simultaneously. Allows you to run Windows 3.1 Jeep accessories simultaneously
too, but somewhat slower. Advertises that the Jeep won't die when you drive
them, even if you off road in them. You never see anyone driving OS/2 Jeeps,
but the manufacturer claims that 9 million Jeeps have been sold.

Windows 95 Jeep

Only just out, the Windows 95 Jeep looks a lot like the Mac Jeep but runs more
like the Windows 3.1 Jeep. It comes with a 32 gallon tank, but when you put
gas
in them, only 16 gallons will fit. Most people will probably keep driving
Windows 3.1 Jeeps until their friends try Windows 95 Jeeps and say they like
it. The owners manual, when you look at the small print, has some of the same
accessories that come in a DOS Jeep, even though the manufacturer claims that
this is an entirely new model.

Windows NT Jeep

Comes with a 32 gallon tank, but you can only buy gas for it by the truckload.
This causes most people to have to go out and buy the gas in groups. The Jeep
looks just like Windows 3.1 Jeep, but the company promises to change the Jeep
to look just like Windows 95 Jeep. Touted as an "industrial strength" Jeep,
and
suggested only for use as fleet vehicles.

UNIX Jeep

This very heavy Jeep comes with 32 gallon tanks, and has been around for
years.
Rumour has it that it was originally built as a hoax by a couple of bored
workers, only for them to find that some people actually liked the Jeep. It
tends to be driven only by freaks or eccentric academics, often with beards;
and drivers of it do not like drivers of any other Jeep. In its basic form it
is extremely difficult to drive and understand the panel indications, but with
the addition of the X-Panel modification, it can be operated on a par with the
others. Many other varieties exist, with a huge range of extras and (often
unpronounceable) accessories.

Hope the trip to Table Mesa went well. We had plans to join the group,
but got out of the driveway a bit late. Came up Scottsdale Rd and hit
Cave Creek at about 10:05. This is where the directions got
misunderstood, and we headed left (away from Bartlett Dam). After
crossing Carefree Hwy, we retraced our path, and headed back the right
way. By now we were so far behind we slowed the pace and enjoyed the
area.

I'm sure the official trip report will mention it, but we were unable to
find FR41 anywhere. 4-5 miles past the campground, there was a likely
turnoff to the left, but it didn't look to have been travelled recently.
Distinguishing marks-2 broken TVs about 100 yards in on the trail,
gunshot victims.

We took a short break at the TVs, and kept going up FR24. About 10-12
miles past the Seven Springs campground, we pulled to th left agin at
FR6xx. The sign was hard to read, and I didn't look closely later.
Distinguishing marks-FR24 starts climbing to the left, around a 60' high
dome rock, with a small chimney-looking rock on top. My 2-year old
refers to it a "a house". FR6xx breaks off to the left across a
sandstone shelf.

I attempted to climb a hill immediately after crossing that shelf, and
did pretty well in a stock Cherokee, until the balding Goodyears up front
decided not to grab on a 45 degree slope. Without an air source, I was
running street pressures, and although new BFGs were pushing, the fronts
had no traction. With no backup available, I decided not to risk broken
parts, and backed down the hill. It was a great picnic area, and another
trail ran off to the right of the hill, looking very inviting for a
future trip.

Headed home after the lunch break, and caught smidgens of conversation on
Channel 4, but nothing really coherent.

Look forward to doing a run WITH the group one of these days again,
though! BTW-Mesa 4 Wheelers called while I was out, and said they are
doing a run to Florence Junction the 28th and 29th. Let me know if
anyone's interested, and I'l get more info passed along.

Sorry we missed you Jim. I'm sure Dan will be putting out the official trip
report, but unofficially, we had a good time. I knew I wouldn't be able to
make breakfast, so I expected to meet the group at the trail head.
Unfortunately, I underestimated the travel time from my home to the trail, and
was running late. Fortunately, though, the group that stopped for breakfast
was also running late, and I caught up to them a couple of miles outside of
Cave Creek. Someone in the group didn't have channel 4, so they had switched
to channel 5. When they saw that a new Jeep had joined the caravan, someone
(I think it was Len) switched over to channel 4 and let me know what happened.
We didn't get to FR41 until about 10:30. Since Dan was leading, I wasn't
looking for signs and I couldn't tell you if the trail was marked or not. I
did see a couple of signs at forks in the road later, though.

It was a pretty easy trip most of the way, but had a few challenges for
someone like me with little experience. Rob (Jarhead) in the CJ5 even had to
go to 4 Hi a couple of times. This was kind of a running joke, since Rob kept
joking about taking his wife's Sentra on that road. He ended up high-
centering on a rock in a creek bed at one point, and had to go to 4wd to get
out of it. Len in the J10 had some difficulty in this same spot due to his
longer wheel base. I made it through this spot in my TJ (stock with 30"
tires), but scraped my tow bar receiver on a rock. We encountered a couple of
other 4WDs, a few ATVs and several horses along the trail. Towards the end of
the trail, there's a beautiful overlook of New River from the top of a hill.
We stopped for a break here and enjoyed the scenery. We all made it back to
I-17 by about 3 or 3:30, and went our seperate ways from there.

The group consisted of 5 vehicles: Dan in his TJ, Eric with wife and kids in
his TJ, Rob and Nathan in a CJ5, Len and kids in his J10, and me and my two
boys in my TJ. It was a real nice way for me to meet some of the other
members of the group, and gain a little experience on the trail. I hope to
meet you on the next trip, which I hope will be very soon.

Your trip report is good enough to be official Dan. Thanks.

We all were running a little late but seemed to catch up with each other
somewhere along FR-24, so we all got to the trailhead about the same time
around 10:20. FR-24 had some serious washboarding so it was sometimes slow
going.

The trailhead wasn't marked at all that I saw. It was the first obvious
turnout to the left after the campgrounds. I had to check the GPS and the Topo
to make sure it was the right place, and even then the road had moved since
the Topo was surveyed (1967).

The trail was easy for the most part, maybe a Class 2.5. The most difficult
part was negotiating a rocky river crossing that required a tight turn around
a boulder on a narrow trail. The short wheelbase really helps. This was
followed by one interesting ledge to climb, and that's about it for the Class
3 stuff.

I had to drive slow, especially downhill, because I had just put new shocks
on, and I discovered on the trail that they were just a tad too long in the
front, and would bottom out occasionally. Back to Fly-N-Hi Monday. They didn't
bottom out going uphill, so that explains why I was going a lot faster uphill
than downhill (if anyone was wondering).

Dan didn't tell you about the UFO we saw. From the saddle we had extensive
views west well past I-17 into the Bradshaws north of Lake Pleasant. Way off
in the distance, probably 20 miles, two bright lights suddenly appeared close
to the ground, stayed still for about 5 minutes, then disappeared.

We had a good time. The trail is good, especially for relative newcomers. I
think it would be real interesting had it rained recently. I took a few
pictures I'll post to my website later, including one of our "UFOs".

This weekend was pretty cool. The trail was also nice. I think I had to much fun though because when I got home I found I busted a shock mount. Must be from getting airborne?(I think) Also my friends name is Jeremy. (by the way but he doesn't mind though) When I got home and looked at the jeep I probably had atleast 10 pound of dirt. I can't wait for the next jeep adventure.

How bout a run in Dec, on a Sunday, for those who havn't been able to make the Saturday runs...say Dec 6th or 13th?

Some trail suggestions:

Apache Leap - generally class 3, with a class 4 hill that can be bypassed.

Box Canyon/Martinez Canyon - class 3 with some optional class 4 stuff for those who want it.

Any other suggestions would be welcome.

Martinez Canyon is loaded with mines. Copper as I recall. It would not
be unusual to find different types of things there.
