So Jeff, those new tires are really hooking up good, huh?
Nope, don't have one and since I won't be going to 42" tires, mine probably won't break any time soon...

Tires had nothing to do with the box failure. I caused it, and I wasnt even driving:rolleyes: :o

Call Pat at Benchworks in Scottsdale. He can rebuild yours or he might have a unit on the shelf.:)

I have one from a 1995 YJ. Double check, but I believe they may be interchangable at least mechanically.

It's pretty sick when I was thinking almost exactly what you wrote...

You probably don't want it if it is from anythng newer than 2002. After about 2002 (2003 was the first year I believe) DC changed from Saginaw to ZF and these boxes are weak. The hoses are also different so it may affect your pump too, not sure.

You should be able to use any box from a 2002 or earlier TJ, any XJ and (most) any YJ. There may be some years or models with variable ratio boxes, some without depending on maybe engine or trim. The worst case is 13:1 best is 16:1 variable ratio. Variable ratio is nice but not required. You know how to drive while many do not. It is largely for the "I want my Jeep to ride and drive like a Cadillac crowd" or the "I can't drive past 50 mph because I feel this little wobble" crowd.

Your best bet is to get one off an '04 or newer TJ. The '03 might have also had them, I know the Rubicons did, but not sure about the rest of the '03s. They use a MB box which is a brute compared to any other TJ steering boxes.

Jeep went to the MB box as a result of offerning larger and more agressive tire sets and they needed a much stronger box.

Whether or not it is a fit on your year I am not sure.

If you want a more heavy duty steering box, get one from a 98-99 durango. it should bolt right up and it is bigger. im putting one on my YJ tomorrow.
