I highly recommend using Rubicon Express parts for your lift. I have gone
through a whole boatload of parts in the last couple of years on my 91 XJ.
Dick Cepek, Rustys, and a couple others.
When you crawl rocks every weekend, it becomes very apparent which parts are
built with quality. When my old lift parts broke or wore out, I replaced
them with RE parts. Now my whole lift is Rubicon. The only RE part I've had
problems with is the Track Bar drop bracket, which I had to reinforce to
keep it from moving around.
A 3" lift with 31's works great, but may rub the wheelwells a bit with the
front disco'ed. Oh ya, I do recommend the JKS Gen 2 Disconects over RE
discos, as they are much easier to use.
Go with Rancho 9000's for shocks, as they can really help to dial in the
ride.
Goodyear MTR's are always a great choice

I will second Stu's recomendation of OziExplorer. Great program.
I am still exploring all of the options. I use it primarily as a
moving map with my laptop mounted on my mobile desk. Since you
have a Grand also, Mike, this may be something you would be
interested in. SWB guys don't usually have room or a clean
(meaning dust-free) area to run a laptop while on the trail. I
have quite a few of the USGS topos downloaded from the UofA and
would be happy to burn them to CD's for you. Haven't got the
whole state yet, but have about 60% and am working on the rest as
I need them. Went out this weekend near Arivaca and found an old
ghost town and mining operation...was great to be able to see
what we were driving past whenever we saw something interesting.
I really want to get together with you sometime and check out how
your Jeep rides with the lift you have as I am seriously
considering the same setup in the <very> near future...would be
happy to show you Ozi etc anytime. I am working in Gilbert every
day (Guadalupe & Country Club) if you would like to get together
sometime.

Well, not only the ubolt.....I noticed a few days ago and today while under my Jeep I found that the rear pinion into my 35c had a slight leak. I've never had this before and I think it stems from taking off my rear trackbar a few weeks ago, then running the Powerline trail last Wed. I think with the trackbar missing I may have gotten to much flex and maybe crushed the pinion seal? Does anyone know if there is just a basic seal there or what? As soon as I find out I'll get the replacements and do it myself but I'm thinking I may have to replace the trak bar or get some kinda fance driveshaft cv or something.

Was checkin my u-bolts today after wheeling and noticed that on my front dana30 axle, driver side, that one ubolt itself is loose. Not the nut, but the u-bolt itself. It was apparent when I checked the tightness on the nut and the ubolt moved. Should I try to break the nut free then re-tighten it or just attempt to tighten it or what. Replace the ubolt?

Subject: [TR] Trip Report - Table Mesa Area - Saturday, February 16, 2002
Hello All,
Alan Parker lead a trail run Saturday, February 16, 2002 across Table Mesa Area
This was an exploratory trip starting at Table Mesa Rd. and I-17, heading west to trails north of Lake Pleasant. Although the trails we used are well mapped, Lake Pleasant has increased in size, and most of the available maps have not been updated. The goal was to make it to Castle Hot Springs Road. We did make it after a number of wrong turns on un-mapped trail, an unexpected water crossing and some pretty rough and rocky four wheeling.
We took Table Mesa Rd. to the Agua Fria River where we crossed the dry riverbed. From that point, I'm sure what the road is called. We followed the road south along the west bank of the Agua Fria and then by White Bluffs, and just north of Indian Mesa. The trail is pretty rough and rutted in this area. Unless you want to thrash your vehicle, I recommend four wheel drive low. Most stock 4x4 vehicles with decent ground clearance should be able to make it, but expect some spinouts and bottom outs. You could end up with some minor damage. As soon as you climb from the west bank of the Agua Fria at White Bluffs and get pasted Indian Mesa youll experience the roughest section of the trail. Id give this short section if trail an AZVJC rating of 3 ({Please keep in mind that I drive an old CJ7 with front and rear lockers, and 33 tires). For the rest of the trip 4WD will only be required for washed out areas and water crossings.
The area beyond Indian Mesa has many undocumented trails most of which are dead ends. You may spend some time back tracking, so be prepared with extra fuel and patience.
We did find the road to Fort Tule. In places its so good that youll be temped to really get on it. But keep in mind, the road does have unexpected turns and it is narrow. Fort Tule is not a fort, but rather an old mine site with a rather well preserved stone / stucco house (circa 1920s to 40s). The BLM has closed the area near Fort Tule to vehicle traffic. So if you want to check out the ruins youll have to hoof it about a half mile round trip. Remember, we want these areas to remain accessible so tread lightly and only take pictures.
After Fort Tule we headed south and west on mapped roads, but again managed to take several wrong turns. After a couple of back tracks we eventually we made it to Humbug Creek Road, which connects with the road to Crown King and then to Castle Hot Springs Road.
This is where the increased size of Lake Pleasant comes into play. On current published maps of the areas (at least the ones I could find), Humbug Creek Roads is about a mile north of the lake. But on this trip we had a 50-yard water crossing where the lake has backed up into Humbug Creek. The day of the trip, the Arizona Game and Fish dept. reported that the lake was at 81% of normal capacity. Its likely that this route will be un-passable. After the crossing the rest of the trip was rather uneventful.
If your interested in checking out his area, I recommend that you pass on going to Castle Hot Springs Road via Humbug Creek Road. It would be a whole lot more interesting trying to get there by using trails further north or maybe even circling back to the Agua Fria via Tip Top Mine and crossing near Gillette. Im up for trying one of these routes, so let me know if you want to organize a trip. Alan Parker alanpaulparker@yahoo.com

I have a dana 27 axle that had grease all over in the Hub and Drum assembly. The brakes didn't agree with the overgrease and it renders them useless. The axle is the closed knuckle design. After removing the hub and drum and taking apart knuckle, what appears to be occuring the the differential oil is making it's way throught he spindle into the hub and eventually into the drum. There is NOT a seal on the hub end of the axle assembly. They left it in the glove box. rather than the axle. What I need to is.....when putting in the seal does the rubber face the u-joint and the metal backing of the seal face the spindle/hub or visa versa? This seal would be located between the u-joint on the axle assembly and the spindle. Does this sound like what could be causing me grief or is there a known problem with this setup?
I have NOT taken apart the Pside, however there is excessive oil and grime on exterior of the knuckle there also. I suspect they left the seals out on both sides.

Hi,
This is the "Arizona" Virtual Jeep Club. We don't have any real mud around
here. It's too rocky and dry, and when it does rain the mud is very shallow
and it's pretty easy to dig down to solid ground.
I run a Powertrax NoSlip locker here and love it. Even without locking hubs
its completely transparent on the street in 2WD.
My comments probably aren't as useful in your climate.
Good luck!

Gary - Your order was placed on 2/13 - last Wednesday. I was out of town on
business and didn't get home until Friday night. Saturday I shipped all the
orders I had received while I was away - I also sent you an email saying
that the decals had shipped Saturday. Monday was a USPS holiday. I do the
best I can at getting the decals out quickly and this is a free service. I
am sorry you had to wait so long - you will probably get them today or
tomorrow..

Kris,
We have a wrenching party going this Saturday in central Phoenix to install
a 4" lift on my friends CJ7. If you want to stop by I'm sure that we can
find time to learn about spark plugs. As far as the death wobble, you might
check the toe in on your lift, the tightness of the front trackbar, it
sounds as if it is getting worse over time, so maybe something is loosening
up.

Adam,
I looked up in my Chiltons book and I think you are talking about the axle shaft oil seal, it is impossible to make out on the drawing which way the seal faces (its too small) but I would say that the wiper part of the seal needs to be facing whatever you are trying to contain. In other words it faces in towards the differential.

Hi,
This is the "Arizona" Virtual Jeep Club.
Good luck!

I'd like to ask you a question: does any of you run a PowerTrax No
Slip at the front differential with manual locking hubs? Tracks
mainly with mud, heavy mud.
What are the pro and against in doing this?
I already have one at the rear differential and I'm very pleased with
it.
I'm going to be in the San Diego area from March 8th. till 14th. and
I'm considering to get another one.
Thank you for your attention. Replies in PVT if you don't mind.

Subject: Tire ? For Rick or whomever
I got my new 31' BFG MT's a couple weeks ago thanks to Rick.
The wear so far seems to be on the inner and outer inch of the tires but none in the middle. I'm thinkin I need a bit more air or less?

Hey Nick,
It is all ways good to go around your vehicle after a long and bumpy
run and torque everything down to spec.I found that out after doing
50 mile run on back roads,I was washing off the dust and noticed I
had lost three lugs and a fourth was almost off,I checked the ubolts
just to see and the were loose too,I put n impct on them and watched
the nuts spin around about 5 times. The pinion seals can leak do to
vibes from the drive shaft and from the pinion nut not being
torqued, replace the seals if they are leaking and torgue everything
to specs. Good luck,

the nut, but the u-bolt itself. It was apparent when I checked the
tightness on the nut and the ubolt moved. Should I try to break the
nut free then re-tighten it or just attempt to tighten it or what.
Replace the ubolt?

Subject: XJ info
Anyone know of any good sites for info dealing on the 2000 XJ? I have that
and soon as I find a NEW dealership to take it to (Towbin in LV has been
less than satisfactory) and get the xfer case looked at (growling noise in
4L) and retightened up (keeps coming loose and rattling with normal street
driving) I want to start planning out the mods. I have an idea of some of
the things I am looking at (TeraFlex Grand Up conversion for one) but would
like to look at all the options with making my XJ a Trail/Street Jeep.

As far as the death wobble, you might
check the toe in on your lift, the tightness of the front trackbar, it
sounds as if it is getting worse over time, so maybe something is loosening
up.

Subject: Re: Oil Seal.
Adam,
I looked up in my Chiltons book and I think you are talking about the axle shaft oil seal, it is impossible to make out on the drawing which way the seal faces (its too small) but I would say that the wiper part of the seal needs to be facing whatever you are trying to contain. In other words it faces in towards the differential.

Subject: [az_vjc] Oil Seal.
TIA
Adam
