David,
Concerning the 2 ASA4WDC members you asked....was it that they couldn't give
you directions or that they wouldn't give you directions.
Hell, I ran Martinez Canyon on Saturday (first time there, 3rd time in the
FJ area).....if you asked me for directions, I couldn't give them to you
either.....because I am not familiar enough with the area to do it. No
conspiracy with a secret hand shake club....[shrug]

I have asked 2 ASA4wdc members who have ran the trail, and they couldn't
give directions. So Is this one of those secret hand shake trails? Do I
need to be in a certain fraternity? IS it because people only run 2.5
or 4.5 trails and nothing in between?

I'm sure someone has directions for it. It is run every year at the
ASA4WDC Jamboree. It is not one of the more popular runs, but it still
sees between 10 and 15 vehicles per day (3 days of Jamboree).
If you want to see the trail, and no one in the AzVJC can (or is
unwilling to) volunteer the info, I sugest signing up for it in the
upcoming Jamboree.

Thanks to Ben Hill and everyone for this suggestion as a first trip! I had
an incredible time.
It was perfect, directions were good, etc., etc. Lots of people on the road
camping and shooting guns, but didn't run into anyone after starting the
climb up the mountain. As soon as I started on FS 650 I was thinking that
it was a little steep - it's very odd and a little unsettling to look at
nothing but your hood.
We found a spot to camp with an incredible view of Superior and what must
have been Queen Creek and the far east valley. It's amazing to see how much
development is moving out there - soon it will definitely be in Superior, if
the valley hits 7 million by 2010, which is possible. Great cell coverage,
which is good (in case of emergency) and bad (you don't feel like you're
away from it all).
Way too many gunshots at night - not being a gun fan from being robbed and
beaten at gunpoint a few years back, all I could think of was drunken hicks
firing into the air at random. Heard some medium sized critters around the
tent - maybe coyotes or javelina or something.
Anyway, got up the next day to a few ATVs and motorcycles racing around and
driving into our camp by accident, so we packed up and hit the road. The
drive was *fun* - got to get some speed at times, then crawl a little bit,
go through water and streambeds, etc., etc. - it was a perfect balance. I
have questions about how I should be driving, but I'll ask in another post.
Drove through Superior - what a cool town, can't believe that it's not more
popular like Jerome or something - and drove home.
Again, thanks everyone for the suggestion - it was awesome. Anything else
out there that's similar?

But all in all, it was a good night, My girlfreind, Lauren, and I, wheeled all over the area. I got to play with my new rock lights. The nice thing was, it was pretty quiet. Sometimes that place can get a get a bit rowdy. Found a heard of cattle. Lauren thought the cows were cute, I was thinkin Big Mac. But got the tires dirty and didnt break anything, good trip.

James,
I agree with you that people rarely break R&P gears.
As for the brakes, I wasn't aware the TJ Dana 44 upgrade included bigger
brakes. But then, I'm not a TJ owner. However, I will say that you
shouldn't rule out bigger drum brakes. When I replaced my YJ's rear
Dana 35 with a Dana 44, I stepped up from 9" drums to 11" drums and
there was a very noticeable improvement in stopping power. Even with
35" tires, I have excellent stopping power (as some arsehole drivers
have forced me to prove on more than one occasion).
As for swapping in a TJ Dana 44, it is my opinion that such a swap would
be worthwhile if you got a good deal on the 44. And, assuming the 44
would bolt right in (regarding control arm mounts and brake lines), that's
a job that many weekend mechanics could do themselves while setting up the
new carrier and gears probably isn't. Although you may need some
driveshaft work (shortening).

Jawbreaker is the trail that the BLM is watching closely. It is my
understanding that the trail is not currently closed. But the BLM
wants traffic throught here limited and they want the traffic that
does go through there to be adequately eqipped to run the trail as
it currently is without creating bypasses or in any way making the
trail easier (which would lead to increased traffic).
The following is from the publication for last October's state
Jamboree. The lower left corner of the page contains a blurb about
the BLM stipulations for the Jawbreaker trail as part of the Jamboree.

Hi Ben,
Some folks I know do a bit of shooting at night using night scopes and similar equipment for practice. They also use tracer rounds so they can see where their fire is directed and besides, tracers are pretty :-) They also use shotguns to launch flares, mostly for fun, but it's good to know how the equipment operates. Practice... Practice... Practice...
You might be right though on the "drunken hick" part. It must have been a drunken hick that robbed you? :-) Sorry you got robbed and I'm glad you're still alive to tell the tale. Might be really handy to have a weapon and know how to use it. Keeps you safe from the two legged critters who might want what you have, and are willing to take it from an unarmed person. The four legged kind probably wouldn't hurt you, but personally, when I'm on the trail I sleep better knowing I'm not defenseless.
Great trail report. Sounds like the kind of ride I would enjoy!
Thanks,
Brian

The more hard core GPS users use applications such as OziExplorer (IMO).
The only drawback to this one is that you need to get your own maps for it.
I use the regular USGS 7.5' topo quads that come on CD (as do all of the
other mapping applications that offer resolution to that level of detail).
Delorme is a very popular brand too. They make a variety of mapping apps
that work well for off-roaders.
I prefer OziExplorer for several reasons. #1 - It is shareware and a
bargain at $75 to register. #2 - The author is responsive to your input and
questions, although questions are usually far and few between as the Help
file is pretty darn good, IMO. #3 - I've been getting over two years of
upgrades (for free). You pay once and you get them for life. He usually
does about 4 major upgrades a year, sometimes more. #4 - I can do more with
the individual tracks in Ozi than I can with other applications. For me,
that is important....for others, it may be of little consequence.

I think it depends on what you want to use them for. Having never run
revolvers I really dont know but Ive heard if you like driving fast through
the desert or playing in the dunes they are fairly bad because they can open
around corners which basicly takes all the weight off the inside spring and
causes a major rollover situation. Like i said I cant really say that this
will happen but it seems a likly situation to me.
However for rockcrawling they'll probably excellent for flexing.
Look for somone who has run them though because they would know better. I
plan to get some eventually but have other prioitys atm

I don't recall hearing that name but I don't recall hearing any
names so we may have done it without knowing it had a name. Most
of the "loops" we did entailed mostly hill climbs. But there was
one loop that had a big rock formation that got you tippy as you
crawled off of it.

I don't recall hearing that name but I don't recall hearing any names so
we may have done it without knowing it had a name. Most of the "loops"
we did entailed mostly hill climbs. But there was one loop that had a
big rock formation that got you tippy as you crawled off of it.

David,
Concerning the 2 ASA4WDC members you asked....was it that they couldn't give
you directions or that they wouldn't give you directions.
Hell, I ran Martinez Canyon on Saturday (first time there, 3rd time in the
FJ area).....if you asked me for directions, I couldn't give them to you
either.....because I am not familiar enough with the area to do it. No
