Hello All,
David Withers lead a trail run Sunday, February 17, 2002 across Jack Handle
Well, we didn't run Orville's loop. We never got directions or found it in any trail guide. So as busy as the FJ area was, I decided on Jack handle.
What a fun, but short trail. It's starts with a 3.5 ft. water fall with a granite notch right behind that. The notch is just wide for a TJ. A full width axle would have to go up and over it. The rest of the trail consisted of many good flexing points and a steep off camber hill. Alan's nearly stock TJ (Also Chili Peper :)) did exceptionally well. We stopped at the top of the ridge line for lunch with a great view.

Not looking to start a huge flame war....this is not a flame, but a simple question.
I was under the impression that we were suppose to be avoiding Jack Handle. Based on previous posts here, I understood it to be one of the trails that is under very close watch by land management officials. I believe the Arizona 4 Wheel Drive Association had asked us not to run it?

Also, there were tracks of other vehicle's being in there.
Where were you when I sent out 3 e-mails asking about 3.5+ trails that included Jack handle?
Also I think we should remove Orville's loop, as it really isn't a trail. From what I've been told its a culmination of trails and washes.

Maybe 4.10 then? Does a th350 have an overdive. The th400 in my suburban does not. If it has an overdrive then you could probably go 4.56 and still have a decent highway driver.
I have a NP435 in my YJ with an early bronco transfer case (D20) and 4.10 in the pigs. 65mph is ok with that combination.
Also, try one of those gear ratio calculators out on the web?

Thanks Stu. I'll probably be driving or towing it most places. It will be a "driver" also. It could see some road miles so I'd like to get 60-65mph. 4:56 gears should be able to do that without to much problem.

Keith,
Are you going to be hauling your CJ on a trailer? If you don't need highway gearing, I would go as low (numerically high) as I could.....4.56 or more would be great for the trail.

Ok, here's the question. I'm going to be running a V6/th350/d18 with teralow 3:15 gears in my flatty with 33" tires. What would be a good axle gear for trails? I'm thinking 3:54 or 3:73. What ya'll think? Also anyone have a 30 spline carrier for a CJ d44 they want to get rid of?

Nope, you're thinking of the wrong trail.
Jaw Breaker is the one under scrutiny of the BLM and the ASA4WDC has
asked wheelers not to run this. Both Martinez Canyon and Jaw Breaker
(which is in Martinez Canyon) are being watched closely, but the
ASA4WDC has asked that only Jaw Breaker not be run.
Jack Handle is an old mining trail that goes up a small wash just on
the other side of the rock ridge as you head toward Martinez
Canyon/Jaw Breaker/Coke Ovens.
Also Jack Handle is rated 3.5, Jaw Breaker is rated 4.5.

I'm sure someone has directions for it. It is run every year at the
ASA4WDC Jamboree. It is not one of the more popular runs, but it
still sees between 10 and 15 vehicles per day (3 days of Jamboree).
If you want to see the trail, and no one in the AzVJC can (or is
unwilling to) volunteer the info, I sugest signing up for it in the
upcoming Jamboree.

BFG M/Ts. If rides better then stock. Flex and articulation are great
when disconnected. I get a very little rubbing in the rear when I do
not air down.
For the price, tech support and easy installation I would recommend it.
I live in Chandler and work in Scottsdale if you would like you look at
it.

I have asked 2 ASA4wdc members who have ran the trail, and they couldn't
give directions. So Is this one of those secret hand shake trails? Do I
need to be in a certain fraternity? IS it because people only run 2.5
or 4.5 trails and nothing in between?

I'm sure someone has directions for it. It is run every year at the
ASA4WDC Jamboree. It is not one of the more popular runs, but it still
sees between 10 and 15 vehicles per day (3 days of Jamboree).
If you want to see the trail, and no one in the AzVJC can (or is
unwilling to) volunteer the info, I sugest signing up for it in the
upcoming Jamboree.

Gotta agree with Randy on this one. I've ran Jack Handle several times, including a week ago. The only bad thing I see is a proliferation of rock stacking. We removed a lot from that first little 3.5ft waterfall, and had lunch in front of the optional 4.5 rated area in the wash. Didn't run thru there, but noted that it's also been really filled in to facilitate passage by lesser equipped vehicles (heck, if I didn't have the hard top on, I may have even given it a go in it's current state!)
Although I won't pretend to understand what's the issue with Jaw Breaker...it can be run responsibly without damaging the surrounding environment. But that's a whole other issue.

simple question.
I was under the impression that we were suppose to be avoiding Jack
Handle. Based on previous posts here, I understood it to be one of the
trails that is under very close watch by land management officials. I
believe the Arizona 4 Wheel Drive Association had asked us not to run it?

I would go 4.11:1 or similar. That way you wont be hard on the clutch to drive around and still have a decent crawling ratio.
Its amazing but the lower you go the better they are, no doubt. Also if you ever think that going big will be an option, going to 4.11 or the next (4.56:1) may help you save a few bucks, depending on what axles (d30, 44 etc) you will run, go with the higher ratio case.

Well, we didn't run Orville's loop. We never got directions or found it in any trail guide. So as busy as the FJ area was, I decided on Jack handle.
What a fun, but short trail. It's starts with a 3.5 ft. water fall with a granite notch right behind that. The notch is just wide for a TJ. A full width axle would have to go up and over it. The rest of the trail consisted of many good flexing points and a steep off camber hill. Alan's nearly stock TJ (Also Chili Peper :)) did exceptionally well. We stopped at the top of the ridge line for lunch with a great view.

I have a 95XJ. I run the Rubicon Express 3.5" lift (Super Flex) and 31"
BFG M/Ts. If rides better then stock. Flex and articulation are great
when disconnected. I get a very little rubbing in the rear when I do
not air down.
For the price, tech support and easy installation I would recommend it.
I live in Chandler and work in Scottsdale if you would like you look at

I have asked 2 ASA4wdc members who have ran the trail, and they couldn't
give directions. So Is this one of those secret hand shake trails? Do I
need to be in a certain fraternity? IS it because people only run 2.5
or 4.5 trails and nothing in between?

Are you going to be hauling your CJ on a trailer? If you don't need highway gearing, I would go as low (numerically high) as I could.....4.56 or more would be great for the trail.
