I am adding a warn powerplant winch. Why the powerplant??? There are plenty of choices out there and everyone has many different needs when it comes to winches. My needs were simple, winch and air compressor. When you add the cost together the new powerplant is a no brainer!!!! One of the best intergrations ever made was a high quality air compressor. The air compressor can air up 4 35" tires from 8psi to 30psi in only 8 minutes!!!! You can also run air tools!!! The actual winch is simular to the popular 9.5TI, a 9500lb winch that should be very usefull in tugging or un flopping a jeep. The install is very straight forward and if you are using a stock bumper, you will need a winch mount plate. First read the instructions, or last in some cases!!! You will need to mount the fairlead first and then 4 bolts to mount the winch to the plate. Now heres where you might need help..Lifting!!! The powerplant is very heavy..about 100lbs+ with a winch plate. The actual mounting is straight forward as long a you don't have any bent tow hooks. I did, so my plate took a bit of negotiating to install. Next came the wiring, EASY!!! Just route the wiring through the engine bay to the batery and hook up. Be careful not to touch the radiator or any sharp areas...included are some Zip ties to stow the long cables. Next, you need to install the hoses to the compressor. Included is the hose and assorted fitting to air up or connect a air tool. Follow the warn breakin instructions to safely use your winch for the first time.:)
Tools need:
Strong back;)
T-55 torque socket
Assorted sockets
Here are some pics I took during the install:

I hope not!!!! When your in traffic your not moving, so how much airflow could I be losing???? Also there are lots of ways when moving, the air could enter in..its not a solid brick. The jeep is though:rolleyes:

Just got done playing with my air tools..the neighbors are going to kill me!!!! This winch can do it all!!! Can't wait to whip out the cutoff wheel or a impact wrench on the trail!!!

Welll it's about time somebody who actually wheels has installed one of these (and posted about it). Let us know how it does filling tires and make sure you get some (good) pictures of it's use out on the trail.

It certainly looks cool. Let us know how you like it. I just don't know if I could ever part with CO2 though.

Little did I know that I forgot to air up all the way after my last trip...My gas milege was bad and the jeep drove that crap!!! I aired up all 4 tires from 25 to 35psi in less than 5 minutes!!!!!
I know Don has his installed and for some reason this winch has not caught on???

I love the concept, but would be really worried about air flow!!!!!!!!!!!!!! That thing is huge. I even went as far as to remote locate the solenoids on my to get an even lower profile.

I would hope Warn tested this winch in hot weather before releasing it???? I'm not to worried, there are large vents at the top and its open faced on the back half.

No no no. You misunderstood. Not the WINCH overheating, your JEEP overheating. Look at the loss of airflow to your radiator.

No, I do understand!!! I don't see much of a loss with all the vents in the upper housing..I'll post pics...

Yep, kinda surprised. I am thinking most folks in this area are concerned about overheating. As am I but my Jeep has never overheated albeit run hotter than I would like.
This summer will be a telling time on the winch and heating of the Jeep. Personally I think it will be ok [or I wouldn't have done it]. I think the primary concern will be on the highway, especially in rush hour traffic.
Stay tuned...

I would think that Warn did their homework on airflow restrictions to a radiator before putting it on the market ..
It does look like the size of an SRP power plant ...

I suspect your right on that. Warn produces quality well engineered and thought out products. I can not imagine that airflow was not considered:confused:
I think that the month of August will tell the tale.

I'm more excited about the compressor than the winch it self!!!! Like I said earlier..It runs all my airtools well...
I can understand the cooling concern..I'm not though.

I read an article somewhere on the engineering that went into this winch, and they said that Warn designed a number of airflow ports into the housing both on the top and on the sides. Personally I'd love to have one but that's some serious coin...

Yes and no: Take the cost of a good winch say the Warn 9.5ti about $950 and a good OBA system say a ExtremeAir, about $375 and you are at $1375. I think the PP is going for about $1400 street price.
Yes you can get a OBA and winch cheaper, MUCH cheaper, but its not going to be a Warn setup.
And you can spend more MUCH more. Go the Killby OBA, then have it installed.
I see the Warn PP and a mid priced solution, that almost anyone can install with the barest of tools.

When I get a winch .. it will be the M8274-50 ...........

I've got the 9.5 ti, and don't see any way to put a York OBA under the hood. (Already have one A/C compressor in there) I noticed a slight increase in engine temp. when I added the winch, removed the fog lights for a slight improvement. Think I will see how your Jeep fares over the summer and maybe trade mine in. Hey Simon, whadda ya think? Lightly used (only once) 9.5 ti trade in? :D

Jason ..
How did you mount the power plant? Bolted down? Or did you spot weld
any place? Bumper to frame? Power plant to bumper?

One more question (maybe :) ) .... if the winch goes out, can the winch
be removed without losing the air compressor or if the compressor is out for repair, can you still use the winch?

I bolted to frame and bumper using a winchmount plate..the bumper is near useless!!!!
It would seem that one could unbolt the winch from the compressor..But the compressor needs the winch to run using the handheld device.

I'm sure Warn did all their hot weather testing on a blistering 78 deg day in Oregon  with their dry 70 percent humidity.... ;)

It probably has more to do with the fact that it's $1200+ rather than not being effective. It's a really cool winch.

IMHO, a Jeep's cooling system is running at or very near max capacity when subjected to the typical summer temps we see hear in the valley.
I've talked to enough TJ owners over the past 8 years to know that more than a few run higher temps than desired.....and with the A/C turned on, climbing out of the Verde Valley on the way back to Phoenix....some simply don't do well in those kind of conditions.
A good friend of mine can remove his 9500 winch and with it, all indications of over heating. Put it back on.....it overheats. I'm not saying all do this, not by no means.
I'm not convinced that these new power plants won't be an issue for some folks. I hope Don's vehicle does well as he was good enough to sell me his used electric compressor which puts 20 PSI of air in my 35" MT/R in two minutes flat. I can't argue with performance like that.

Why is this in the "Do It Yourself" section and not the "Product and Services Review" section?
I would think that everyone knows they can do this themselves. Has anyone actually paid someone else to bolt a winch onto their Jeep?

I'm wondering if Warn was aiming that new winch more towards the JK market... looks like the winch sits alot lower on the JK using a sunken "in the bumper" setup.
http://www.purejeep.com/prodimages/PJ1000-LRG.jpg
The M.O.R.E bumper shown below might help gain back some of that lost TJ radiator but not much... the new warn winch may not even fit with that bumper... I think the steering box gets in the way if you sink the winch too low.

Warn is aiming it at whom ever will buy it, regardless of the vehicle they are intending to mount it on.
