ACTION ALERT

DEPARTMENT OF INTERIOR

appears to be trying to avoid comments from the people FOR the

2002-2007 DOI Strategic Plan

In December 2001 and January 2002 they had 6 meeting, 4 in DC, 1 in Albuquerque and 1 in Denver reference the Plan. Attendance was by invitation only and the people invited were the environmental green groups and the animal rights groups. At the last minute, like 3-4 days before the meetings, they got around to inviting a very few from our side.

NOW they have published a notice in the February 14, 2002 Federal Register. The Department of the Interior has begun the process of
revising its strategic plan that covers the period of FY 2000-2005. The
process for developing the new plan will place a major emphasis on end-
results to be achieved by the Department and how these desired outcomes
can be effectively measured to assess our performance. COMMENTS ARE DUE MARCH 1, 2002. 2 WEEKS TIME

The document is available on the DOI web site http://www.doi.gov/gpra/. They are pdf files and there is one for each agency of DOI. It is not user friendly.

Suggested action: Immediately FAX a letter to the address below.

1) request a 90 to 120 days extension to the commend period.

2) request a copy of the plan be mailed to you.

3) request a meeting in your state with appropriate notice in the Federal Register and local newspapers.

4) CC your request to your federal, state and local elected officials. Most if not all of them probably do not know about this action.

5) Provide this information to as many people as you can.

E-mail: doistratplan@usgs.gov.
Fax: (202) 208-2619.
Mail: U.S. Department of the Interior, Office of the Secretary, Office
of Planning and Performance Management, 1849 C Street, NW B MS 5258, Washington, DC 20240.

FOR FURTHER INFORMATION: LeRon Bielak (202) 208-1818

FROM THE FEDERAL REGISTER.

SUPPLEMENTARY INFORMATION: The current plan, nine separate bureau and office plans and a Departmental Overview, will be replaced with a single, integrated plan.
Contrary to past practices of first publishing a draft plan for
comment, the DOI is soliciting stakeholder views through a series of
meetings and written comments on appropriate outcomes and strategies
that the Department should achieve in six primary mission areas. These
areas are:
1. Preservation of Natural and Cultural Resources.
2. Restoration of Natural and Cultural Resources.
3. Recreation Uses on Public Lands.
4. Use of Natural Resources (e.g., energy and non-energy minerals,
timber, water, grazing land, etc.).
5. Meeting our Trust Responsibilities to Native Americans, Alaskan
Natives, and Island Communities.
6. Role of Science in Meeting the Missions of the Department.
Information obtained from internal and external stakeholders will
be used to develop a revised strategic plan that is consistent with the
missions of the Department and the Government Performance and Results Act (GPRA) requirements.

If they're talking about the spring in the e-brake release mechanism
(as I think they are), then your assertion would not be correct.
But it would be an effective excuse to convince the wife you need
the upgrade. ;-)

Dan,

I talked to the president of the "U Joint Tool" company you described and
told him that it would be tough to sell his device at even HALF of his
asking price... that the market for such a tool wouldn't bear what he is
trying to charge. I believe the best price I could get out of them was
about $220 or so... still more than TWICE what I'd be willing to pay.

I have the Harbor Freight tool and while it is extremely inexpensive and
very rough around the edges; it gets the job done... although not nearly as
well as the vice I have mounted to my rear bumper <grin>.

I'd highly recommend the Harbor Freight tool... you'll love it and it even
works on ball joints!

Evening,

After 37,000 miles on my original factory plugs... I changed them last week.
Plug gaps were worn from the nominal .035" to .067" so I replaced them with
new spark plugs.

Net results... 33% gain in fuel economy from replacing them.

Suggestion; Chrysler doesn't use 100k mile plugs... If you have over 25k on
the original set, I'd replace them.

New plugs are Bosch Platinum... love em... and please; don't buy Split-Fire
plugs unless you like throwing money away.

Kind Regards,

Joe West

There has been some suggestions regarding not using Platinum plugs. I
haven't followed the discussions, so I don't know that the cons are/were. I
simply use the recommended Champion plugs, less than $1.00 each and change
'em every 20,000 miles. One of the best things that you can do. Cheap and
quick.

Cheers,
Fred

Boy, the grapevine is FAST............... yes, the event as a "competition" has been cancelled due to BLM mucking around getting the permit approved and putting "stipulations" in place that were above the line etc etc. Part of the reason was we did not receive the support from our local rock crawlers to make this event a spectacular event.

The Arizona Rock Crawlers are planning a campout this weekend and will be doing "rock crawling" for fun and exhibition.......... EVERYONE is invited to join in.

That was the impression I had. That it was for the hardcore, ARCA style rigs and competitors.

Who would have entered if they knew there was a class for daily drivers and not a high probability of rollovers, but something that would test your driving skills? Anyone?

I was told that there were only 15 entries and they needed 40 just to pay for the permits, etc. Apparently, some people were worried that it was going to be too difficult and only for the hard core rock crawlers.

I was looking forward to this also. Sandy said not enough support, any idea what she means? Was it not enough entries? Or did they need a letter campaign to the BLM? I was not aware of any appeal for assistance.

Bruce-- Take the 101 north to Pima Rd. Follow it north until you see the
Bartlett Lake turnoff, then turn east and follow the signs.
