That's a really great area. Would make for an excellent trip for the
group. A wide variety of challenges. You can even make it over to the
White Canyon Wilderness area, south of Superior from there, though I've
never had a chance to go that far.
How far up Martinez did you go? ...past the old mill by the mines? I've
not had my Jeep up that far yet, though I've hiked it.
Looking forward to seeing your pictures!

My favorite trip in January is 4-wheeling to the Coke Ovens via Battle Axe Rd. Really easy 4x4 trip unless the Gila Rvier is overflowing its banks like it did last year! Very scenic, particularly near Copper Butte and the White Canyon Wilderness Area. This is usually an all day trip. I'll keep the group posted.

Howdy,
I have just subscribed to the Arizona Virtual Jeep Club E-Mail list. I have

Welcome to AzVJC! The group was created to share trail info; jeep info;
and to get together for trail runs. For November, there are plans for a
trip on Nov 7 (Mud Springs - class 4 trail); and Nov 21 (Table Mesa -
class 2-3 trail). Since your new, you may not have seen the posts. If
your interesed, shoot a note out and we'll provide the info.
If you have some favorite trails, shoot out a note to the group on trail
description....directions, points of interest, level of difficulty (Jeep
1 to 5 scale), etc. Trails that have been done so far are Crown King
from Lake Pleasant(3-3+); Reno Pass(3+); Four Peaks to Edwards
Park(3-4); the Rolls(3+); and Mt.Ord(2-3). Runs can be well planned or
spur of the moment and have included anywhere from 2 to 7 Jeeps, ranging
from TJ-YJ-CJ's to XJ's (Linda's minihummer) and can include overnights
to short day trips and anything in between.

As for favorite trails....don't know many...however I have taken teh Devils'
highway a couple of times. It is an easy trail (can't image more than a
class 1) from Ajo to Yuma. A lot of history and a good time. Reference

Subject: Nov 7 - Mud Springs
What's the head count for Mud Springs next Saturday??
So far, I believe it's Dan (Revolvr), Ed (Coyote), and Doug (Me)...I need a better handle than this, with all those cool names like Yucca, Mango, Revolvr and Coyote. 8-)
Anyone else up for this one? It's a really cool trip, and an easy day trip. When I did it, I started at the trail at about 11a, and got back to the highway at about 5p, with some scenic stops in between. It's a class 4, with some good ledges, rock crawling and a challenging hill.
Dan...the ledges/rocks are not quite as rough as the one we did near the mines on the Edwards Park trip (where you gave your gas tank skid some Jeep character)...but close. The hill near the end of the trip is a real challenge which I didn't try at the time.
Should be a fun trip, so if your interested, shoot out a note so we can have a head count. For those that havn't been out before, we take our time, always keeping everyone in sight....so give it a try...it's a good time! For those w/o mods, a l/s rear diff(or lockers), the Table Mesa run looks to be a good one (class 2-3), so hope to see you there. BTW, a CB is highly advisable.
If anyone is interested in camping out on the Mud Springs trip, there is a spot at the base of the hill, near the end of the trail. There are cattle, however. There's also supposed to be a nice spot at the very end of the trail, which I havn't seen.
As to start time, what's the concensus?

I'll be coming. I recommend getting to the trailhead at 10 AM. Doug, you'll
need to provide the exact directions to the trailhead since you've been there.
I believe it's about 8 miles past the Four Peaks turnoff. For those of you who
like Topos, you'll find this trail on the Boulder Mountain quad.
I'm up for camping too!

Directions to the Mud Springs Trail:
-Take SR87 north, toward Sunflower. Trail is about 6-8 mi south of
Sunflower.
-Trail # is FR1704, but it's not marked. The turn off from SR87 is to
the east (right) and is just immediately before Sycamore Creek (look for
the Sycamore Creek sign, by the bridge). It's about 8.5 mi north of the
Four Peaks turn off. Keep an eye out for Pine Creek, and Sycamore should
be the next 'signed' creek that SR87 crosses.
- The trail immediately crosses Sycamore Creek (across an old spillway),
where there is a good assembly point for airing down and doin that sway
bar thang.
- The trail itself (east of the creek) is hard to find since there are
trails all over the place, so hang out just after crossing the creek
until all are assembled.
I'm up for camping also. Nothing like the Az night sky, once your away
from the lights of Phoenix. For those that want to come, but might not
want to camp, not to worry....if necessary, we'll pair up, to at least
get you past the hard parts on the trip back...good to have spotters,
just in case. The toughest stuff is near the end of the trail. The
majority of it is class 3, with the last 3rd or so class 4.
As to starting time, let's assemble at the trail at 10a.
If your planning on coming, shoot a note out so we can have a head
count. Also, please note if you want to camp or not, to see if we have
pairs for the trip back for those that might not want to camp.
See ya there!

About 1 am this morning I finally got the web site updated with the box canyon and coke oven trails from last week.
Go to http://www.4x4wheelin.com then Trails/Arizona. Please let me know if you think the maps are helpful. Any other suggestions are appreciated.
I have more trail info from Utah and Colorado to add.
BTW after a lot of trial and error, I am having pretty good luck calibrating these maps to display gps coordinates along a trail for trip planning or during a trip. I plan to put some of this info on the site as well.

Nice job! Great photos and nice descriptions of the trails! I took my Dodge 1/2-ton SWB through box canyon a couple of years ago. It's tight for a full-size, but also a lot of fun. I took my hands off the steering wheel and let the canyon guide the big blue truck through the tight spots! The last time I went through there there was about 6 inches of water flowing through it. It most certainly added to the excitement! But the ZJ did what it was susposed to do!
The Coke Ovens Trail is my favorite 'after the holidays' trail. Last year we mud bogged through several spots because the Gila River had overflowed its banks. In the next year or so, the trail from Battle Axe Rd will be making a detour. The road that goes up the switchback by the White Canyon WIlderness area is going to be re-routed to accomondate a new mine site. Yes. Copper Butte is in the center of the site that ASARCO is planning on mining in the near future! The ASA4WDC and other OHV groups were instrumental in working out a deal that will allow continued access from 177 to the Coke Ovens. There is something to be said for PACs!

etc. which I will be posting on my web site this weekend. I'll let you guys
know when I'm finished.

Welcome to AzVJC! The group was created to share trail info; jeep info;
and to get together for trail runs.

I got the word on the November trips from a buddy from the FSJ list (Len
Sullivan)...would love to go...unfortunately I have previous commitments.
As for favorite trails....don't know many...however I have taken teh Devils'
highway a couple of times. It is an easy trail (can't image more than a
class 1) from Ajo to Yuma. A lot of history and a good time. Reference
