Subject: [az_vjc] where is the flex?
I recently did a lift on my rig, 2 inches of shackle lift (heavy duty
shackles with crossbar support) plus 2 inches of spring lift. I changed
shocks at the same time to rancho's of suitable length. I've lost a lot
of the flex that I used to have and it's hurting me on the trail. Sway
bar is removed front and rear, same as it was before the lift. Pre-lift
shackles were horrible thin and wimpy, they twisted while steering and
caused bad handling. This is now cured, but my ride is a lot less flexy
:-(
Friends have told me that this is common when lifting, they say it's
because of spring twist mostly. What is the answer? I've heard that
revolving (and rotating) shackles are pretty much the way to go, but at
around $400/set over here compared to $50/ set for the shackles I bought
it's hard to justify. I'm running the original rubber bushings, reason
being that I figure poly bushings would just exacerbate the problem.
Are there any easy(or easier) ways to get my flex back?
Thanks,
Shaun

I agree 100%, you can 't go wrong with Dan. He is great and his
products are unmatched. One side has covered up some bad body damage
and the other side just protected me from some more bad damage. I got
mine with the holes cut for flush tail lamps and smooth so I could paint
them to match my Jeep. Most people don't even know that they are there.

Jayke,
Watch the trail postings here on VJC.....others go wheelin' on these runs
and you certainly can too! Sign up for the run, be at the designated
starting area at the proper time, meet the folks, and enjoy the run!
As to your front end....virtually anything can cause the problem....tie rod
ends, loose control arms, track bar, ball joints, etc. I've had a loose
track bar mounting bolt give my TJ front end a fit before I got it tightened
it up. As to if it needs replacing or not, I've no idea. Could it be the
source of your problem, it certainly could be.

You can keep the licenes plate in the same location. Just have to
drill the holes for the bracket. The taillights are about $5.00 each
at any parts store. Get a license lamp from there too or there is a
company that makes bolts that are lighted, mainly for motorcycles,
that you can use. I have my plate mounted in the center of my spare
so its out of the way from rocks.

Subject: [TR] Trip Report - Powerline Trail - Wednesday, February 13, 2002
Hello All,
Nick Notestine lead a trail run Wednesday, February 13, 2002 across Powerline Trail
We (Scott &; Friend in his scout, Me and ride-along Clint in my YJ, Mike in his nearly stock TJ and Lyle in his nicely built TJ) met at the Oak flat campground about 9:30 Wed. morning. After introductions we aired down and drove to the trail head. When we came the gate there were signs saying "Closed to public due to safety concerns" DAMN! So we all got out and looked over the hils only to see big drilling rigs all along the trail taking core samples. Seems they are traking down a copper deposit and it's a big possibility that this side of the trail could soon be a huge hole in the ground. Two people working for the drilling company came up to the gate and qouted to us that 'We can't let you in but we can let you out'. Fine, we though. We will find the rumored entrance from Highway 177 and come out this way. Not to mention that we were all wondering who the hell gave this company permission to stop us from using public land......
So, we headed back to Superior and south on 177 to Forest Road 315 ( N 33(degrees)13'31.5 W 111(deg.)04'37.4 ), which unless you had these co-ordinates you would never guess was the way in...Turns out that this is one kick butt Forest road! It runs about 3/4 a mile on level rocky road but once it hits the Apache Leap cliffs it switchbacks to the top. This is NO normal switchbacks! This thing was very loose baseball sized rocks with staircases and boulders thrown around all over! A truely challenging mini-run all in itself. Mike with shear talented driving managed his nearly stock TJ to the top with some skid plate banging and Scott in his Scout with a wacked out carborator actually had to run the hill in reverse! His Scout was damn cheap and like a tank so through out the trip if Scott wanted to get somewhere the gas pedel was the way to do it! The carb kept running to rich on hills so most climbs were done in reverse!
We eventually crested the switch backs and thank goodness looking down into the valley in front of us was the Powerline trail we had come to run. The trail itself has gotten a bit harder than last time I ran it. The whole trail was following a pattern of 500 feet of very slow going rock crawling, and 500 feet of nerve gathering smooth land, then back to the 500 feet of rock crawling, over and over. The rock crawling portions were very ruff. Picking the right line was crucial. Both Mike and I took some good numerous underside hits from some large boulders. Lyle didn't have any problems and Scott, well, just gassed it! Again, kudos to Mike for dragging his TJ over many spots! This trail is probably non passable to a stock Jeep without skid platting. The descents and hill climbs always came at the 500 feet of rockcrawling portions, which made them very challenging. We eventually came upon the optional 4.0 spot and decided to skip it. There was some obvious rock stacking there, but even so, it is a very nasty spot. This trail runs through some beutifull hillsides filled with hoodoos. We exited the way we came in, which, by the way has a wonderfull view of the surounding hills and valley from the top. By the time we hit Hwy 177 it was around 430 and we decided to meet up in Superior for the airing up.
It was an overall wonderfull day with some increadible challenging rock crawling among beutifull views. This should be a trail experienced by everyone! I havent heard of any AZ-VJC trail runs here in a very long time. This would be a great change from the usuall Box Canyon, Coke ovens runs. Considering the drilling going on, portions of this trail may not be around long.

Dear Mike,
I joined the virtual jeep club today but I don't have a jeep. My friend in San Diego does and she is coming to visit the first weekend of March 2002. We are looking for a trail that two single gals and a 5 year old grandson can navigate. She's a novice. Her jeep is a 11/2 year old wrangler of some sort. We were hoping to go with someone else but realize that we can't really join a club with her lliving there. So can you help me??

cheaper between the BFG MTR or the Goodyear MTR?
I would like to get 4 new ones and I am undecided between the Goodyear
and BFG. I am leaning towards the Goodyear but if BFG is cheaper I
don't mind getting them.
Does Rick give a good discount?

Thanks,
Shaun

To the first question. you're at the place for wheelin' buddies. Watch for
others postin' when they are going and you can join. Also you can check out

The shake in the front maybe the track bar or a couple of other factors. Joe

Jayke,
Watch the trail postings here on VJC.....others go wheelin' on these runs
and you certainly can too!

Thanks, Charlene

Anyone else think it would be fun to come up with some annual awards
for the AzVJC?
Things like:
"Jeeper of the Year"
"Most Often Stuck" (or Broke)
"Worst Stuck" (or Broke)
"Most Notorious Trip" (awarded to the Trip Leader)
"Mechanic of the Year"
"Most likely to Flame OT Posts"
More suggestions?
Comments?
Nominations?
If there is interest, I'm sure I could come up with some certificates
and get them printed.

Jayke,
To the first question. you're at the place for wheelin' buddies. Watch for
others postin' when they are going and you can join. Also you can check out
www.azvjc.org and sign up to check out future posted runs.
The shake in the front maybe the track bar or a couple of other factors. Joe
D. aka FlexyXJ is a club member and does everyone right with a great
alignment and price.
I am sure someone has his details for you.

First...How do you find people to go wheelin' with? I
have a '98 Grand Cherokee Laredo, v85.9l, 33', 4"lift,
and air lockers...no one else I know has anything, so
I usually hit the trail alone with my wife...
Second...when I hit around 50-60mph, the front end of
my jeep sometimes shakes pretty bad. A mechanic told
me it was my track bar...Does that sound right...he
was kind of shady.
Thanks All,

BFG are locked in price for dealers. So I think the goodyears probably
come out to the same price or less. Rick will give you the best deal

blew everyone away. Plus he'll treat you right while you are there.

P.S. go with the goodyears they are a better tire imo
