I'll be there!
If you like Topos, the one to get for this area is Boulder Mountain. Once we
get to 422, the rest of the trip is all about 5000 feet or higher. So expect
temps to be a little cooler. I would expect overnight to be around 50 deg.
Looking forward to it.

Hey guys! I'm coming down to Phoenix Next Weekend for a week of R&R. Unfortunately, I will be driving down over the weekend and back to CO the next weekend. I plan on exploring around the Box Canyon & Florence area and maybe up around Jerome. Usually 1/2 or full day trips. If anyone is available for some 4 wheeling during the week, let me know.

Subject: FR-422, 463 Trip report
On Saturday DougB and I went down FR422, FR422A and FR463 and camped overnight
in Edwards Park.
422 is accessed from the Four Peaks Road at the ridgeline and runs North
approximately 10 miles to Edwards Park. It is rated as a class 3, but I would
give it a Class 3.5 for a few wough areas. 463 is a detour to the East that
links up again with 422 after a few miles. This road is Class 4.
We met at the Four Peaks parking area 1/2 mile in from SR-87 and aired down.
Ther was a car here that had been stripped, crashed and was upside down. Lots
of beer cans about. Probably had been stolen.
Four Peaks road is 18 miles to the Lone Pine Saddle and rated Class 2. It's a
fairly busy road, mostly with ATVs. We first went left at the saddle to check
out the Four Peaks trailhead. This area was burned in April 1995, and still
had a spooky look to it with most of the trees black and stripped of any
leaves or needles. (Looked spooky like something out of the Wizard of Oz.
Might make an interesting place for a Halloween party). Then we headed north
to 422. It was cool and nice along the ridge line at about 5500 feet.
We took 422 to the 463 turn-off and went down 422A for a while to Pig Pine
Flat. This is a relatively flat wooded area that might make for good camping.
Next we turned back and took the 463 Class 4 road. Not 50 yards into the trail
we reached the roughest part. We had to scramble down large boulders while
making a sharp righthand turn. We both got good use out of our gas tank skid
plates, but Doug has the Tomken skid plate and didn't get any damage. I have a
good scrape on mine but not serious. A rock also hit my rear bumper just
inboard of the plastic endcap and dented that good.
463 then continues on, steep and narrow but not as bad as the first part. We
passed two mines and then headed up a very steep part, also Class 4, but no
damage this time. Then we linked back up with 422.
422 then continues to Edwards Park. I rate this as Class 3. This is probably
the most scenic trail I've been on. Great views into the Tonto Basin both
south towards Roosevelt Lake and north to the Rim. We went up a short side
trail to the top of a hill where I felt like I could see half of Arizona.
The road continues along the Mazatzal Divide, then gets into a relatively flat
pine forest "Little Pine Flat" then on to Edwards Park. This is a flat area
mostly forest and meadows. We got to our camp site near the end of the trail
at about 4 in the afternoon.
Overnight, the stars were bright, the sky clear, and wood was plentiful for a
fire. The temp got down to about 36 degrees. We didn't see any critters, but
in the morning Doug saw what looked like Elk tracks on top of our tire tracks
from the previous day.
We did find that 422 does end and loops around. There is a hiking trail at the
end (TR-66) which leads toward Reno Pass, but no Jeep trail that we could
find.
On the way back we took 422 all the way and there are some steep rough spots
that I would rate as Class 3.5. We missed these areas the day before because
of our 463 detour. Then we headed back down to the torturous Four Peaks road.
Torturous because it just goes on and on and on.
This is a most excellent trail. Scenic, and 422 itself is not too difficult.
Good for out of town guests, especially if you camp overnight. This would be a
long one day trip.
But 463 is another story. I have a gas tank skid plate and new leaner rear
bumper on my Christmas list.

I believe there's supposed to be a Jeep Jamboree in Globe that weekend.
They may be doing Apache Leap trail, which is a good one. Generaly class
2 and 3, with a good class 4 climb. Not too long...good day trip. Others
in the group may know more about this.

The engine in my 89 Cherokee has finally decided to retire. I probably
have a few weeks before it goes kaput, but would like to replace it
before then.
Does anyone in the group have a shop they would recommend for engine
swaps? I'd prefer East Valley, but am not totally committed to that
region. The engine itself will probably be a rebuild offered by Checker
Auto. The 4.0L I-6 has served me well for 150,000+ miles, and I expect
this one to go at least that.

Howdy, gang! I am a new member with a 47 Willys CJ2A in the process of a rebuild, and hope to be on the trail soon. As for the engine help, I would suggest picking up a Truck Trader and looking in the white pages of it for engine replacements. If you don't know how to do the job, have it done.
I did the motor in my Camaro 5 years ago, and it ran great after a month of headaches, but it was fun. Also, check out compatibility with a larger motor, and go with the biggest one you can stuff under the hood. Seems to me that it's the best way to get the most out of the vehicle. Besides, I have always been a MORE POWER fan.
If you have any more q's, then please ask. I'll be happy to help you get the best deal possible.

Looks like we have a few new members, I see we're up to 28! Welcome!
We have people with all levels of experience. Some of you may never have taken
your Jeep off-road and you're looking for a fairly easy trail to get your feet
wet. There are good trails out there for this. Some of you may be bored with
anything less than Class 4. Good trails for that too.
Some of you are more interested in hunting down remote ghost towns, or perhaps
rockhounding, or camping in remote areas. A lot of us have these interests
too.
So drop us a line and tell us where you are located and what kind of trail
runs you want to try. If you want to try a particular trail, post it and a
proposed date. Our trail runs typically have from 2 to 7 Jeeps involved (and
more people). The longer the advanced notice, the more people tend to come.
Check out our archives at
http://www.egroups.com/list/az_vjc/. You will find past trail reports and
upcoming plans. The next trip planned is Sunday 10/25. Linda is leading a trip
to Bulldog Canyon. This is a half day trip, relatively easy and located close
to Phoenix. See her e-mail dated 10/3 for details.

Subject: Suggestions for November trips
All,
Here are some ideas for November runs. If you have any other ideas, post em!
Table Mesa Road:
Table Mesa Road, aka FR-41, runs east/west from I-17 to Cave Creek Road
(FR-24) about 5 miles north of the Seven Springs campground. This should a be
very scenic day tour. I am guessing it would be rated Class 3 by the write up
I found at this web site:
http://www.azcentral.com/travel/hiking/outdoornews/0514newriver.shtml.
Cherry Creek:
This trail had a write up in the October Arizona Highways. This is FR-203,
starting close to Roosevelt Lake, following Cherry Creek through the Sierra
Anchas, and coming out to 288 just south of Young. Supposed to be one of the
more beautiful trails around. The article implied the road was washed out and
impassible at one place about 2/3 of the way north. But I suspect for us
Jeepers, that's simply not the case. ;-) Anyone been on this trail? This is at
least an all day trip, or would make a good overnighter.
Crown King:
Sure, we just did this a few months ago, but it's the only trail that I know
of with a saloon at the end! This is a better time of year for it too, cooler
but the snows haven't hit yet. Rated Class 3 with some Class 4 areas that can
be bypassed. An all day trip.
Mud Springs:
DougB tried this Class 4 trail on his own a few weeks back. It is short in
miles but very tough, an all day trip! It is located off SR-87 at Sycamore
Creek. If you have a modified Jeep that can handle Class 4, this would be a
challenging run close to Phoenix.
Superior/Miami/Florence:
There are also a number of trails in the Superior/Miami/Florence area. I
haven't been to these yet. The weather should be about right for these. These
are also closer to Tucson and we have a couple of members there.

Just a note on this one...
About 1.5 yrs ago, my father and I did this trip in his 86 Chevy 3/4 ton 4wd
truck. We had a 3" lift, and a winch. It took us 2 days to get throught his
trail as it was a definite 4 with a couple of 5 spots. We did not see any
other vehicles (other than the ones off the side of the cliff) the whole time.
It was a great trip, but we did have several large obstacles such as boulders,
and washouts, and in a couple of places there were mudslides that we had no
choice but to dig through. There were also a lot of off-camber spots. This
is not a trail that you want to try in a day - definite overnight trip! I
don't think that the JEEPS in the group would have any problems. I would not
reccomend taking a stock Jeep on this trip though. I am not trying to
discourage anyone, by all means, this is a good JEEP trail. It was rough in a
large truck because of the long wheelbase. Hope this helps some...

Subject: flat tire canyon (again)
Well, my Sunday trip up Flat Tire Canyon for the ASA4WDC ended short of the end of the trail. In my last report I stated that the trail ended at a pile of rocks. It actually goes on for about another mile. The trail after the rocks is a rocky wash with no real challenges unless you make your own. The trail ride I led on Sunday just made it to the pile of rocks because we had a number of problems that kept us stopped on the trail for longer than anticipated.
* ignition fire
* a serious transmission leak
* a flat tire (ripped on the inside sidewall)
* vacuum disconnect failure on an older YJ.
* strapped 4-5 vehicles up the hills.
* cracked a running light on a '98 ZJ along with some sheet metal damage.
This trail is very tight when it starts dropping into the canyon, but not so tight that full-size LWB vehicles can't maneuver.
I don't want to discourage anyone from checking out this trail. Just make sure that you don't do it alone. And carry a good assortment of nut. bolts, and fix-it stuff. The vaccum disconnect was fixed with super glue, silicon adhesive, duct tape, and a piece of tubing from a master brake cylinder priming kit.
Hope to see some VJC members on Sunday Oct 25 for Bulldog Canyon.

Seven Springs- There are some ways you can go in there that are harder
than others. There is one washed out wash crossing on rocks in
particular that's bad (well, not too bad.) We had a guest last time we
did it in P4W (about a year ago) in a stock Geo Tracker that made the
trip without too much trouble (a little more clearance would have made
it cake for him), so I think a Class 3 might be pushing it a bit. The
majority of vehicles didn't even bother locking hubs for this one. It's
a really nice drive, though.
Phoenix 4 Wheelers is having a run up to Crown King on November 7.
Guests are always welcome. We are meeting at the White Horse (99th &
Carefree) at 8AM. Let me know, and I'll look for you.
P4W Roundup is going to be a full week this year (like the Old Days,
hehehe) so mark your calendar for April 10-18, 1999. Roundup this year
will include an overnighter to Crown King from the new Ranch, probably
some side stuff in the Bradshaws on this one. We're still awaiting
final approval from the BLM (we just got our bond back from the last
Roundup in March two weeks ago!). The only thing holding up the permit
is completion of a study on some sort of chipmunk or owl or something,
to make sure we won't bother them. I forget just what kind of critter
it is exactly, but they said it shouldn't be a problem, the study just
has to be done before they can issue the permit. I'll post more details
when they're firmed up. There will be A LOT of runs and fun.
Oh yeah, and Spook Rally is going on at the P4W ranch on Oct. 31. I
think the Creepy Crawlers are putting it on...

All good suggestions.
Cherry Creek is one of the most scenic drives I've done. It's a class 2
to a 2+. Very easy. Some nice camping spots, and it takes you up to the
pines of the Sierra Anchas. Good for an overnight, but can be done in a
long day, with an early start. I'd vote for an overnight, if we choose
this one.
Crown King...the perenial favorite. Great camping in the Bradshaws.
Would be great as either an overnight or long day trip. Always a good
choice.
Mud Springs was a great and challenging run. A definate class 4. Some
rock crawling, and a long hill that has some giant mogals. There's also
a run to the west from Sycamore Creek that's supposed to be quite good
that I'd like to try sometime. Both would be very good choices.
Up from Superior there's Apache Leap, which is a good day
trip...generally a class 2 to 3, with a nice class 4 hill.
Looking forward to a November run.

As a follow up on my post about Cherry Creek, there is a wash out, but
it's easily gotten around. I've done this trip twice, each way, and
enjoyed it both times, for the scenery, if not the 4 wheeling.

If you like Topos, the one to get for this area is Boulder Mountain. Once we
get to 422, the rest of the trip is all about 5000 feet or higher. So expect
temps to be a little cooler. I would expect overnight to be around 50 deg.
Looking forward to it.

Subject: New Members

* ignition fire
* a serious transmission leak
