check out NAXJA.org for all the XJ info you will ever need.
Things you need to determine is
1) budget
2) how extreme do you wish to take it
that will help answer most of your questions right there

What do you mean? 20k dollars...is that including the purchase of the vehicle, or is that just modifications?
A 2, you wouldn't really need 4wd. If you're running a 4+, you need a significantly modified vehicle.

To be honest, it is entirely dependent on your driving style, what trails you run, etc. I can't just tell you what to do, as it might not be suitable for you. The first thing I would do would be to put a spacer kit on it, and some 30" tires or something and just wheel and decide what you want to do with it. This forum will provide you with a lot of useful info; but the best thing to do is just get out there and wheel it; the mods will come as necessary.

If you had the choice of building a rock crawler from a steel framed or stamped sheet metal/unibody vehicle, what would you choose..............Seriously?

This has been hashed over hundreds of times over the last 6 years and has been determined to be a moot point.......with frame stiffeners, and a few other tricks an xj will be on the trails for many many years. many choose an XJ

Hey yeah i have to get in on this! Honestly i have looked at TJ's YJ's and CJ's... Driving the "grocery getter" IMO is better in the sence that were not like everyone else and thier moms in the typical Jeep, and its nice to hang with the typical TJ style Jeeps on trails and even do better sometimes because the XJ's wheelbase helps us in the sence that we dont sit in the holes all 500 of the TJ's just dug up trying to go up an obsticle...

Ahhhh the flames!!!
XJs are fine but they do take allot more work and aftermarket parts to be what a vehicle with a frame is.
There are usually two flavors of off road vehicle. Those that are daily drivers that see light to mild wheeling and those that are trailered and built for off road only.
Most XJs that get built for serious crawling were obtained for allot less cash than almost anything else out there. I have nothing against any type of vehicle and will wheel anything I can.
My point was, if you are planning on modifying something to be a rock crawler, running 4.5+ trails, starting with a frame would be easier and more desirable.

:) :D Thank you RenoBob i think that was alot better put... Yes XJ's need like 6 inches of lift to equal 3" on a tj lol... and yes i agree with you on all of that i was just busting your "bearings" i intend on building a YJ or TJ when i get stationed back in the states myself, but ill be keeping the XJ for sure :)

at stock height an xj and a TJ have the same BOA. (break over angle That is because the center plate on a TJ drops farther frame the frame than does an XJ. In stock from equally equipted XJ will out wheel a TJ everyday.
There are usually two flavors of off road vehicle. Those that are daily drivers that see light to mild wheeling and those that are trailered and built for off road only. I wheeled many trails with my last XJ From JV, CA axle alley, back in the day and anaconda Most times I went out we got scoffs from the trailer queen crowd. But Ive always been able to do the trail and drive it home afterwards.

For you, I like to build dual sport rigs as it where. Its nice to be able to take my rig from the trail head air down, do a 4.5+ air up and drive it home. for many of us we believe if you need to trailer your junk to get to the trail head its no longer a real Jeep, but just a toy. .
I like the fact I can do 4.5 trails and drive home at 80 mph on the highway with the AC on and stereo cranked.

I'd like to add onto that XJNA, yesterday we were passed rudely by a TJ over rough rocks yelling "a bit faster please" (see other post) and I was thinking to myself "man I'll bet their chassis is taking a beating". When we got back to the trail head I saw the TJ again getting loaded up onto a truck. Made me laugh
To those of you out there who don't understand or have the common sense to allow for enough room in order to pass and rather run us others off the road, just remember who has to drive their jeep home and who loads it up on a trailer.

If you have $20k lying around...then buy a used buggy for crying out loud.
There...i just saved you the $20k because in 3-5 years that XJ is gonna be beat to piss if you want to ROCK CRAWL (4.5's..may some 5.0's but unlikely).
XJ/ZJ are good but the unibody will only take so much.
I dumped more than this into my ZJ but once i started running 4.5's it starts taking it's toll....i ended up parting it out and take the rest to the crusher.
So...if you really want to build an XJ do it...but you really have to think of what you WANT TO DO FIRST.

Well for a 20,000 budget I would not start with any Jeep
Id start from scratch. Tj, YJ too short of wheelbase, XJ, ZJ too much body
Id start with tube
I will have a total of under 4000 for my xj trail ready
DesertFab Chassis would suite your needs if you just want a buggy!! :D

X2 Why if you had a choice would you pick something without a frame and requiring so much more work to make it equal? Get a tj frame, buy a shaffers tube chassis and some decently strong axles

honestly if i could go back in time i would not have picked a xj for my rig to build i twist it up so much and the unibody is so wacked out the doors dont like to oped or close with out alot of force and the back hatch is the same way, now if my xj wasnt my daily driver i would pull the doors and the back hatch and problem solved but it all depends on what your over all plan is.

Like when we're trying to put a burned up motorcycle in the back to get it off the trails and your dumbass parks off camber so we cant open one door and cant shut the back hatch??
if youre set on an xj, buy one and use it for the easier trails. anything 4.0 or so is gonna need a lot of protection, big lift and more money to build than a beater tj with stout axles and disregard for sheetmetal

the fact he didnt already purchase a vehicle was the basis for the argument. Some of us feel that might be a mistake. Im sure he will still go with HIS choice but for us to not voice our opinions and him later decide ti was a bad choice is not how this site works. We're here to help other wheelers based on our own opinions and experiences. I dont see the harm in giving him our opinion. He has free will and can choose to not listen to our advice should he feel it was ill advised.
