I'm entertaining the thought of a CJ run later this spring. We can decide on tha trail(s) later based upon mods/abilities of those who are interested. Please take the poll and/or post your thoughts.
To nip cries of "discrimination" in the bud, I have no problems if folks in other model Jeeps or even non-Jeeps attend. I just want to do a run that is predominantly CJ's for a change instead of being the only CJ on the run. Just a way to get to know other CJ owners and run some trails at the same time.
If necessary, CJ owners can PM me and we can plan it off-list.

It sounds cool but I don't think many people 'wheel CJ's anymore. I hardly ever see them. I would like to meet other CJ owners too but I doubt if my CJ7 will ever come out of its eternal "build up" status. I takes a long time to build a Jeep when you wait for parts to buy and install themselves.

Alot depends on where the majority of the CJ folks are from. If East Valley, then likely something in FJ. If North/West side, then maybe something in Table Mesa. Once we know which area, we can pick a trail/trails based upon how folks are setup. It doesn't have to be a difficult run, just something that everyone involved will enjoy without being too easy.
Timing might also be an issue. Personally, I'm on-call every third week/weekend so it has to be a weekend when I'm not tied to the pager.
The poll is live for 30 days. After that , I'll see how many CJ owners are interested and figure out which area and which day to do it.

:D We will definetely be there. Putting in the front locker, front diff skid, twin sticks and chromemoly tierod tubes in the next 7 days... Hopefully by spring time we'll be on 33's (gotta wear out the 32's before the wife let's me upgrade the tires)...
As for not many people wheel CJ's, can't say I agree... I guess people haven't been to TDS or the local Round Up, CJ's as far as you can see.
I guess a lot of people around here would be shocked if they saw a flat fender at Table Mesa  ....
It's just who you run with.... The crowd around here seems to be a bit younger and maybe less experienced in the mechanics of things and you need to be very mechanical to undo what most people have done to the average CJ (if you own a multiple owner used CJ you know exactly what I mean :D ). Also helps to have a garage, compressor and about $10k in tools to own a CJ...
Looking forward to it...

Welcome to the VJC, Denise.
As stated, we can keep the trails relatively mild if necessary. The main focus for this run is to get mostly CJ's to attend and just have fun and so we can all compare mods, etc.
So what are you doing to the CJ now? Maybe post some pics and tell us some of the mods being done :)

Thanks K7MTO! I'm doing a frame off restoration by myself & it's my first time working on any type of automobile, so everything is new. I've run into great luck (4 wheelers) & some really nice friends willing to help. I have the 258 Inline 6 (auto). Going to install a 1" body lift with 2.5" shackels (hope i spelled that right). Just installed new brake hard lines and got the rear end installed (i have superior lockers in the rear). Hopefully next weekend the front end will be installed. Then I will pull the motor & tranny and install onto the new frame. I will start a new thread with pictures showing the before & after. I can't wait until I'm finished!

Thanks for the kind words of encouragement.:) I've had many days of wanting to sell my project & buy something else. I have checked out that site, found some really good advice on there.

Matt,
I've yet to go on any trail in AZ with my CJ. I hope to have it trail worthy by the time of the run. I can't wait to get out and start using it!!!
I guess what I need is to have someone look at my rig and tell me what needs upgraded yet to make it trail worthy (safe). (I could spend a lifetime working on it in my garage never thinking it is really to the point it can go on a trail).

Bill - profiling sounds good to me :) After the grief taken by some of the organizers of the "Jeep only" Devils Highway run over on the Yahoo list, I figured I'd let anyone who felt like they were being left out voice their opinion. So far it seems the masses are fine with it. The only folks who voted option #4 did so in jest :)
Huck - works for me.
Jim - you'd be surprised at some of the rigs folks have showed up for a run in. Junk I wouldn't roll out of my garage :) If it's streetable you should be fine. Of course pick your obstacles wisely and carry tools and spares :) Given the wide range of mods from nearly stock to very built, I want to keep the run (at least the first presuming we do more later) somewhat mild. It might be a bit boring for a few of us but we can always hit harder trails again another weekend.
L&L - you have time as I'm thinking a March or April timeframe so folks (like me) can finish working on our junk.

My goodness, where did all these CJ owners come from? Count me in! I also hate being the only CJ owner on a trail run. Although, one time we did have one other. He took out a motor mount and put his fan through his radiator and had to be towed back. Maybe that is one of the reasons.

Not sure yet. I figured sometime in March or April as I have some things to finish up myself, plus the weather should be real nice by then.
Since we have a mix of folks from all over the valley I'm thinking a run that's somewhat centrail might be fun, like maybe Log Corral. For LC, one locker and 33's are recomended but I've seen it driven unlocked before (Jamie). There's really only the one short rocky spot and we can assist folks through that if necessary. It's also a pin-striping trail so anyone who values their paint might not want to run it. I'm open to suggestions.
Or, we could split this into two runs - one at TM for the folks up north and one at FJ for those of us in the east valley. Each run could choose a trail based upon the capabilities of the CJ's attending.
Billy 4 hp
02-11-2007, 04:35 AM
I think with the amount of CJ's chiming in two different run might be mandatory... TM area would be good as we could meet at a communal spot and split off into two groups (say Terminator / Predator for more modified and Black Canyon Trail for the Lesser)...
If TM is the destination let me know as a could do a bit of prerunning and I know of a ton more trails out there (easy to hard) that haven't been touched by the AVJC members (atleast runs that I see posted, seems like the same trails get ran over and over but I have been riding dirt bikes / trials bikes out there since I was 9 years old and covered a ton of ground)... Some of them are so untraveled it might take me awhile to find them again if they are even still findable...
What about Reno Pass at Four Peaks area and then you could run Four Peaks with the stockers and another thought would be Desoto Mine and Crown King (could actually do Crown King to Lake Pleasant)... Just some thoughts, let me know if I can help...
I'm getting excited.... This is gonna be fun...
k7mto
02-11-2007, 05:01 AM
If the consensus is for TM, I'll drive up or maybe flat tow since driving the CJ that far isn't the most comfortable trip. I'm also not too familiar with the TM trails so we'd need multiple trail leaders. I'm built but don't mind running easier trails as this was intended more as a fun run than for the challenge (I can run tougher trails anytime).
If we need to do seperate runs due to number of participants, I think there are enough here on the east side that we could do one down here while you guys run up there, although getting a group shot of all the CJ's would be cool.
Either is fine with me and I'll go with the consensus.
OlneyJeeps
02-11-2007, 08:07 AM
TM is great, but which trail we did would limit who could attend... additionally because trails are generally 1 lane could lead to serious backups while less built CJ's tried to negotiate.
I vote for coves of saguaro lake because everything is there and everything is accessable to those from mild to wild... stockers can park and watch whild wild ones attempt wild lines at play area or out of coves 1,2.... additionally great area for kids to play for those who bring theirs

I'm on-call two weekends during March and April (3/24-25 and 4/14-15) and the Gilbert Car/Bike/Jeep show is 3/17. Any other weekend is fine for me.
So let's throw out a date...how's Saturday March 31 work for everyone?
I'm fine with the Coves if that's where folks want to go. Driving up and down hills all day isn't really my thing (are there 'trails' there I'm not familiar with?), but it's a good place for stockers and those who don't want to worry about damage, so I'll go there if that's the consensus.

have you been all the way back to cove 7 (narrow "canyon" leads to little beach, small rock garden little ways away)?
Yeah, that's where we went the one/only time I've been out there. Kind of a long ways back just for about 20 mins of easy crawling :)
I also prefer a trail run over play areas, but this trip is more for fun/comaraderie amongst CJ owners so I'm fine with wherever we go. We can also use this run as a way to hook up with others whose CJ are built similarly and setup more CJ runs later on based on mods/experience.
One benefit of the Coves is it will be great area to get some group shots of all the CJ's together, especially if taken from atop a hill looking down on the group :)
Let's wait a few days for more feedback, then I'll post the run here and on the VJC website for March 31 either for the Coves or wherever the majority prefers. If it turns out many can't make that date, we can adjust the schedule accordingly.

I like a TM run. We all meet there at a given time for a meet and greet. Then we divide into two or three group levels. Run our trails and meet back at the staging area at a given time (or try to anyways). Then end with a BBQ. How cool would it be to car a van back to PHX in a line of like 30 cj's?
March 31 is perfect.

where have all the cj folks been? on the tin can alley trip on the 4th of feb. I was the only cj out of 14 heaps.I felt like the red-headed step child. There was much concern that I had a (oh my god ) carburetor.Come on guys there are ways to fix the flooding issue.I know the coil springs are better, but the new rigs only exist because the older ones did there job.cj run sounds great but my trail buddy has a tj so lets have it open. 1970 cj5 1972 buick v-6 with off road cam.Ford truck 4-speed with 6 to 1 low.Koenig 9000 lb PTO winch.D30 with molly and OX joints and ARB with Co2.D44 with detroit 4.88s.Hydro boost, chevy steering, two fuel tanks,4.5 lift with 33 goodyears.Major issue still to be resolved is the headers and mufflers right where the rock sliders shoud be.There is 21 inches ground clearance to the exhaust but I have crushed both sides and the headers cant be welded much more so I must be picky where I go until I can pay Troy (all new mods done by toys by troy) to change it.I WILL be there for CJ run!

Personally, if I drive all the way up there, I want to make a weekend out of it. It's too far for just a day wheeling trip.
Maybe we can plan a CJ camping trip run (later in the year when it's hot down here in the valley) if there's anywhere to camp up there. I'd flat tow the CJ and tent camp - how much property you got there ecamp?
Then we could run Cottonwood one day and Sedona the next :)

There is a cleanup scheduled for TM on 3/31 by the gun clubs and they are asking for help from the 4WD community.
From the reponses it appears most don't want to do the coves so I'm going to post this first CJ run in FJ for the same date (3/31). I hope to do these CJ runs a few times a year so we can plan the next one up in TM later on.

FJ - 3/31. Has there been a decision on which trails. I should be ready by then.

Sort of depends on the capabilities of the rigs/drivers. To accomodate everyone, maybe a quick run through Lower Woodpecker (folks who want to skip the tough stuff can go around) and then Upper Woodpecker which has bypasses to everything. If anyone wants to get gnarly they can jump into Woody's Wash along the way :) If everyone is better equipped maybe we can run something harder. Whatever works best for the group as a whole.
This isn't so much about which trails we run or how tough they are, as a chance to just get together with other CJ owners and have fun. We can run the tougher stuff anytime.
Here's a link to the run post for folks to sign up...
