View Full Version : 35's & 3.73's - Good idea or not so much?

Guys,
My heep is currently fitted with 3.73 gears (open diffs), running 33 x 12.50 x15's. My problem is that the tires are approaching useless status, and I don't have the scratch to upgrade tires, gears and axles all at one time. I hate to buy another set of 33's since I can probably swing the gear swap in a few months.
So my question -
What are the thoughts on buying the 35's now, then doing the gear swap in a few months? Would this combination of rubber & gears turn the Jeep into a slug, or would the loss of power & driveability be marginal?
Thanks for any and all advice/opinions...

it would be definately down on power. Ive been driving my 4cyl on 410s and 33s for 3 years. I could imagine its pretty much the same. I say run it and deal with it :D

Thanks Shnipe... and good luck getting some tomorrow night... ;)
AZG23, it's a 5 speed. Well, it was a 5 speed with the stock rubber. With 33's it's a 4 speed... :(

That's harsh brother, I feel for you. :o But then again, good things come to those who wait... and I gotta believe that with the subtle hints I've seen on these boards she's starting to weaken. Lessee... Rachel Shnipe... has a nice ring to it...:D

Must be a 4 cylinder. I ran 33s with 3.73s and the 5 speed 4.0L combo pulled 5th up to whatever speed was doable given balance of the tires and driveshafts. Cruising up I-17 at 80+ mph was easy.
It might be all those bolt-ons that don't add any power and therefore make no difference.

I ran 37's and 3.73's for a couple of months. DD 46 miles round trip on the 101. It can be done, but not ideal. If you are planning future mods, then I say yes get the 35's.

Thanks Bailey! These are your old Pro-Comps, BTW... ;) Held up really well, I've put nearly 20k on them since I picked them up, figure I got maybe 5k left. :(
And yes, it's a 4.0 I6, not a 4-banger... but 5th gear just ain't there except for level driving (and a tailwind doesn't hurt either!)

I would think that the 6 would do better than that
CJ7 304 4v,AT(999), 3.73 , 35MT's plenty of power
J10 390 4v,AT(TH400) 3.54 33AT's plenty of power
For close simulation, try starting out in 2nd gear... is it painful or doable?

I am glad to see that you got good use out of the tires. Those wheels look good on your Jeep. I always like those wheels, especially with the center caps. Oh, I also like the third brake light. :D
35's and 3.73's on my DD TJ.. such a waste of tires.. haha... OD doesn't exist with this ratio and Gas milage suffers signifigantly.. Then agian, my driving style doesn't lend to great gas milage..

Doable for a DD, but will suck on power off road.

Trust me, that's what I feel like!
Thanks all for your advice & input. I think I'm gonna hold off on the 35's until I can do it right and get the gears and maybe a locker in there first. When that happens I should have a slightly used set of 33's for sale...;)
