The D60 rear end in 63" WMs to WMS... and rim to rim (without tire) is 73" on a 8" rim.......

Im jealous :D

Did you paint the arms? just for the time being or will it be for good? I heard it was bad news to paint them or was that just powdercoating?

I painted the arms,, I plugged the tapered holes and did not paint the bottom of the arms... Guess I didn't want um rusting.....

Huh? Why would painting an arm be frowned upon?

Paint should be ok but powder coating puts that thickness between the tighting surfaces, then it can crack or twist and let things work loose. In the taper hole would be real bad

THAT makes sense.

Looks good, you will be pleased with the width when you are done. I know I was pleased with how mine did this weekend on Anaconda.

Lookin good, Jeff.

Looks like I might have a Scout rear 60 for $50. It's 65" wms-wms which will be perfect, imo. Not quite full width but wide enough. I'll take about the same amount of time to build it as you did and I may pick your brain on the disc swap.

Matt....

I have a complete part list for the disc brake conversion... STUPID easy to do FYI... I'd be glad to help when / if you do it....

Looks like I'll be grinding the calipers a bit :

9386

here's how wide the thing will end up.. without tires... ( The D60 rim to rim measures at 72.5 inches FYI) thoughts on the sizze difference ? I though they would have been a 'little' closer... Oh well

9388

And the current state... I need to pick up new brake calipers this afternoon.. The old one's just look beat and the hardware .. (rubber rings and sleeves and gone)

Hoping to have these babies under the YJ by the end of Feb..... 2007.... :)

installed new brake calipers last night.. had good pads.. The will install the locking hubs this evening..... Brake question thought.. DOES any one know is the D30 front brake lines (I have some braided really long RE lines) will bolt up to the J10 (d44) calpiers usinghte exsiting banjo bolts and washers ?

Also... I could use some U bolt help on determining size?

Installed new calipers... ground the stuff a bit to clear the 15" rims..... Installed the cleaned up manual locking hubs.... nothing much else....

How it looked last night....

Mine were all pretty like that too, until after the first few runs :)

If you are asking about how to measure tube diameter... An easy way to measure tube diameter, is to simply run a tape measure all the way around the tube and record that measurement of circumference.

Then divide the circumference by 3.145 (Pi) to obtain the OD of the tube...:) ;)

I didn't read this whole thread but couldn't he just take the same measuring tape and just measure across to get the OD? Seems easier that calculating the OD based on circumference?

Your proposed method, is significantly more prone to measurement errors, thus less accurate...

BUT, there are certianly always more than one way to skin a cat...:p ;)

I don't know... last time I tried to bend my metal tape measure tape around a round tube the margin of error was pretty significant :) The wifes fabric tape measure worked better but she didn't appreciate the grease stains

I just read the rest of the thread and found what he's actually measuring. I didn't realize it was an axle and therefore with the knuckles and such in the way it's not as easy to just measure across like you could with lets say a scrap piece of tubing.

A combination of ob1Jeeper and Matt's idea would probably be best in this situation. Use a material measuring tape as a standard measuring tape would probably be waaay off as it doesn't like to bend like that. Then calculate the diameter based on this number.

Obviously a caliper would be the best, but calculating it would be sufficient for the purpose of figuring out what u-bolts you need.

For my housing mounted spring pad, I used the -hold a tape measure behind the axle tube and eyeball it- method, then had Spectrac bend me a set and they fit fine :)

Matt.

I'm still a bit confused on the grind to get the perch to fit on the casting... whay not just modify the perch ?

k7mto
02-02-2007, 11:22 AM
Depends alot on your housing I guess. Mine had the u-bolt channels molded in and it would have been a PITA trying to make the perch fit the shape of the housing. It was much simpler to just grind the housing down to a nice even arch, then widen the arch of the perch to match.

Yea Im in the same boat......... I'll be grinding

I figured out roughly where the perch would sit, then ground as little as necessary. Then I put the perch on and scribed a matching arch on the perch so I knew how much to take off. I was careful not to take off too much of either.

Having the arch in the housing also allows you to spin the perch to the right spot when adjusting your camber before you weld the perch in place.
