Just want to let you know that my guests (Pat and Ed) had a great time. On the way out we tossed a coin to decide which routes to take up and down the hills -- the more challenging routes seemed to win every time! Sorry we left early. My guests were not used to the heat and I didn't want them to suffer too much.
Just a reminder that I am prerunning Flat Tire Canyon on Saturday, 9/26 meet at the Texaco east of the Florence Junction turn-off on US60 at 8:00am. I spoke with the other trip leader, Bill, and got directions. I have been on part of this trail before and it is relatively easy to find. The trail is brushy and rocky. The steep hill can be a challenge to vehicles with open differentials. Bill also recommended carrying a tire patch kit since this trail is known to eat tires. This will definitely be an all day trip so make sure you bring lunch, snacks, and plenty of water.

OK. October 10th and 11th seem to be the best time. Those going so far are DougB(me), DanW, JimF, and LenS. The trip will be up to Four Peaks, and points north. The trails have class 3 and class 4 available. May connect w/ Reno Pass. Should be fun.
If anyone else is interested, shoot us a note. As we get closer, we'll arrange the particulars.

I just got my permit for Bulldog Canyon renewed. I'll lead a trip through there in late October if anyone is interested. A stock vehicle (except for stock Geo Trackers) can get through this trail with no problem. There are a couple of ledges but they are easy to traverse. The entire trail takes about 2-3 hours to run.

Subject: Flat Tire Canyon report
Well the Flat Tire Canyon PreRun went off without an major problems. I
had nine vehicles on the trail: 2 ZJs, 2 CJs, 1 CJ2A, 1 Dodge truck, 1
Chevy Blazer, and 2 Samuaris. All drivers were experienced and knew
their limits.
The plan was to take a detour to look at the new Surprise Trail being
opened for the ASA4WDC 4x4 Jamboree (Oct 15-18) and then continue on to
run the Flat Tire Canyon Trail. The entrance to Surprise Trail was easy
to find. Awesome trail! Mere words cannot describe how difficult this
trail is! It'll be a great specator's trail at the Jamboree.
After an hour or so we took off for Flat TIre Canyon. On the way I
pointed out Woodpecker and the Ajax Mine trails to those who had never
been in the area before. On the way out one of the Sammys had the
catalytic converter fail so we took lunch early and the offending part
was removed. Gordon Gratts and his son will probably be deaf for a
couple of days! Other incidents included the CJ2A losing throttle cable
linkage and its clutch lever started binding after a bit of rock
crawling. And Eric Demyan (ZJ) had to be tugged up a hill. All in all
the trail was very nice. Some members of the group tried the rock
crawling sections of the trail. I didn't because the rocks looked like
they were spaced just right to give the old ZJ problems -- if I had a
little more clearance....
After leaving the trail we headed toward Superior and US60. In Superior
we aired up and got some cold drinks. Eric left for home and the rest of
us decided to get dinner on the way back into town. Loran called my
boyfriend and invited to come to dinner with us. He finally got his new
tires and had spent the afternoon with the Surprise Trail work crew. It
turns out the the work crew on the Surprise Trail had made very little
progress after we left them to run Flat Tire. About 20 feet of trail.
They got one Jeep up the 10ft vertical waterfall and were preparing to
get another one up it when he left.
Flat Tire Canyon is a great little trail. It would a wonderful camping
spot in the winter months. The views of surrounding mountains are
incredible.
Trail difficulty:
Rated 3.0 on the ASA4WDC scale. 4WD is needed. Clearance, a limited slip
or locker in the rear is recommended, tow hooks are handy, and some
driving experience is necessary. The rockcrawling is medium, but there
are bypasses around most of the spots. Careful spotting is needed for
all types of vehicles in the rrock crawlng areas. SWB vehicles such as
Samuaris, CJ/TJ/YJs can have a lot of fun. Larger vehicles need lots of
ground clearance to get through these areas.
Directions:
The Flat Tire Canyon trail is situated beween the south end of Telegraph
Canyon and the north end of Martinez Canyon and is mostly on BLM land.
There are hiking trail signposts at the trail head. Flat Tire Canyon is
also part of the Arizona Trail (a Sierra Club/USFS project).
The Flat Tire Canyon Trail is easy to find with a Tonto National Forest
Map and the USGS Mineral Mountain Quad. The trail takes off from FR4
southwest (approx) from small mining town of Superior. From Superior,
take FR 4 through Telegraph Canyon and then start looking for a mining
tripod high on a hill to the south. The trailhead starts where FR4 makes
a hard right hand turn.
Coming in from Box Canyon Road requires the USGS Mineral Mountain
quadrangle; a compass or GPS (if you are so inclined); and somebody who
is familiar with the area. Take the Box Canyon Road south from US60;
turn east on the road leading to Ajax Mine, and then keep going east
toward Orphan Boy Mine, but go left instead of right at the
Y-intersection; follow the trail over the hills and across the cattle
guard. Keep an eye out for the mining tripod and shack on the south
side of the road. Also look for the hiking trail signposts. Turning into
the trailhead may require you to back up. The first portion of the
trail winds up the side of a small hill and is somewhat visible from
FR4.
There are three or four trails that take off from the main trail. Most
of them lead to mining claims and are dead ends. So stay left! You want
to make a left after you drop down into the wash. Going right takes you
to a short dead end trail with a three stage hill climb. Going left
keeps you on the Flat Tire trail. after a couple of turns in the wash
you'll see stone cairns off to the right. Make a right turn here and
follow the trail. The trail goes up and over an small hill and then
drops into another very rocky, very tight wash. There are two spots
that might require spotting but the rest of the trail is easy as long as
you go slow. The trail deadends with a pile of rocks. Large groups may
have trouble turning around. There is one hill climb on the way out that
might be a problem for vehicles without a locker, limited-slip, or
agressive tires. Tow straps should be readily accessible.

Subject: Bulldog Canyon Trail Ride
Hi All,
I am leading a trip through Bulldog Canyon on Sunday, October 25, 1998.
I know the Jeep Jamboree is going on in Globe, but not everybody wants
to spend $225/person to drive trails similar to this one. And Bulldog is
a lot closer to home!
Bulldog Canyon is an easy, very scenic 4x4 trail which is located north
of Mesa in the Tonto National Forest. This is a great trail for novice
4-wheelers. The trail has a few short steep hills, some off-camber
sections, and a few small ledges. A stock 4x4 can do this trail with no
problems. Chances are we'll meet hikers, bikers, and equestrians on the
trail.
Meeting place: Corner of Bush Highway and Usery Pass Road
Meeting time: 9:00am Sunday, October 25.
Monitor CB Channel 7
Trail rating: 2.0 - 2.5
Time on trail: Probably no longer than 4 hours. It depends on the
turnout. Bring your lunch and plenty of water.
If you need more info, email me or contact me at 834-1171.
Please feel free to pass this invitation along.

OK. Those who have expressed interest in an overnight to Four Peaks/Edwards Park are DanW; JimF; JimL; and LenS. If anyone else is interested, shoot us a note.
The trip will be this Sat., with a return Sunday. I suggest we meet at the parking area on Four Peaks Road (off SR87...bout 28mi north of McDowell and SR87). The parking area is just a short distance east of SR87.
A description of the run is as follows:
-Take FR143(Class2) 18mi to Four Peaks Area.
-Pick up FR422(Class3) and head north along El Oso Divide, up to 5500' or so...great views east and west.
-Take FR422A/FR463(Class4), which roughly parallels 422. Some mine sites and camping spots here. For those not wanting class 4, you can continue on FR422. FR463 hooks up again to FR422.
-Continue on FR422 to Edwards Park. Should be some camping sites here, though I'm really not certain. There's a challenging hill climb here, and some hiking trails.
We can either camp at Edwards Park, or back at Lone Pine Saddle (Four Peaks), or anywhere else
we'd like.
As an aside, there may be a connecting road from Edwards Park to Reno Pass which I'd like to try. Reno Pass is a class 3.
As for starting time...since we'll be camping out, we don't need a real early start. How's 9a sound?
Looking forward to it. Let us know who'll be coming, so we can have a good head count.

Sounds good. Have had some mechanical issues since last run, but hope to

OK. October 10th and 11th seem to be the best time. Those going so far
are DougB(me), DanW, JimF, and LenS. The trip will be up to Four Peaks,
and points north. The trails have class 3 and class 4 available. May
connect w/ Reno Pass. Should be fun.
If anyone else is interested, shoot us a note. As we get closer, we'll
arrange the particulars.

Coming in from Box Canyon Road requires the USGS Mineral Mountain
quadrangle; a compass or GPS (if you are so inclined); and somebody who
is familiar with the area. Take the Box Canyon Road south from US60;
turn east on the road leading to Ajax Mine, and then keep going east
toward Orphan Boy Mine, but go left instead of right at the
Y-intersection; follow the trail over the hills and across the cattle

Unfortunately, although I'm interested in a camping run, both Jeeps
decided the last month would be the right time to unveil the fall line-up
of problems. Since they're both daily drivers, I can't do much of
anything yet to fix 'em, and can't afford to break anything 'Jeeping.

Just a note to say that we are still alive. We have not been very active
lately due to school for the kids, and work for us. We are looking forward to
getting out again sometime soon, because the JEEP really needs a workout. I
have a few mechanical issues to solve before we go anywhere though. Also, I
have invited a friend by the name of Charlie to join our group. He has a 1946
Willy's.
Happy Jeeping this weekend!
