View Full Version : Which shop to have fabricate a roll cage?

This question was asked within another thread but had no response probably because it was off topic for the thread. So here is the question:

Where is the best shop in Phoenix area to have fabricate and install a roll cage for CJ-8 (inside half cab only) ?

Thanks in advance for your input.

I used Monkey bars, but not sure what happened to him, he did a great job on my yj, had planned on him doing some additional cage work, but havent' seen or heard anything about him lately, anyone know, or did I miss the notice.

Seeing as nobody mentioned Hunter Offraod even after he sponsor such a great annual event for the AZVJC I guess I will bring him up for this project. John has done some great work on my YJ and I highly suggest you check his shop out.

ive seen his work on pirate or crawlinaz. cant remember where but he seemed to do some great fab work.

I dont think you can go wrong with Hunter, 4wheelers, Desertfab. They all have done some great work and had it all well documented here online. Give them all a call. Let them know what youre looking for and go see some examples. Figure out what materails theyre using in the quotes and compare then pick whats best for you. They all can do some great tubework.

HANDS DOWN .......HUNTER OFFROAD. John does a QUALITY job, stays at the price he quotes, Makes it right the first time, Takes accountability for what he does, as he is a one man shop and cant "blame" anything on his "workers" and will not leave bare metal, as he paints everything. It really amazes me how many shops WONT do something a simple as a coat of paint, before assembly so you dont have to tear the whole thing apart to paint it. John takes great pride in what he does, to the point that I am FULLY comfortable letting him tear into my 07 Rubicon for a full cage. :D

I wish I knew that before I had mine done (with someone else). I would have definitely paid extra to have mine painted as I really hated painting my cage and knew I would even before I had it installed. It was a pain masking everything and I still got some black paint/primer on the dash. :(

not to hi jack but, I'm getting ready to paint mine.
Why not just remove the cage and paint it on the side?
that what I plane to do but I may not know something wrong with doing that.

Well truth be known, I dont like to paint stuff much at the shop. After awhile, it gets pretty messy. I think Flexy knows that's a pet peeve  of mine.

That being said, I have had projects where sometimes I have to paint something for the customer before it goes in, like the TJ cage..... or seat bracket work close to alot of interoir, skid plates and such. Always felt bad about sending someone home after I just spent half the day installing it, only to make them go home and take it off again:eek: .

But come on now Scully! I know you have been havein' a ball. I couldnt  have all the fun...

Painting the cage has been a pain, but for some sadistic reason I have been enjoying it!:)
I just need to finish so I can take down the temporary paint both that I’ve set up in the garage!:D

I did see monkey bar's tj at the start of lower terminator while we were waiting to do annaconda on Sat. But I havn't heard from him on here for awhile... I was asking him to do a cage for my jeep and sent him a few PMs but havn't heard back in a month or so.

I'll contact Hunter to see about it.

I got a PM from him the other day about some work he did for me and he didn't say why, just said that is was out of the welding/bending business and most likely for a very long time. I didn't ask, just wished him well.

We offer painting or powder coating has an option on all tubework.

Painting a cage is not so simple, It actually take alot of time to do. Most of the time the customer paints a custom color or wants to match body color.:D

Powder coat usually $150 - $ 250 depending on color how much prep ect..

todds right, painting a cage can take a while. powdercoat is pretty easy you just have to find the color the customer wants. it also depends on the time frame of the project. some people dont want to wait for the cage to go to powdercoat. if it has to be completely built inside the vehicle like a pickup then it can take a lot of time to tape off everything and paint it. time is money and some people are on budgets. anything CAN be done for a price. my stuff has been on pirate and crawlinaz. just like Hunter im a 1 man show also and take great pride in what i build. my names on it and it doesnt leave unless im satisfied. also with me its one project at a time. no side tracking, full priority on your project.

Here's a link to a previous post of mine. Hope it may help.
http://www.virtualjeepclub.com/showthread.php?t=16490&highlight=monkeybars

I initially used 4 cans of paint, but went back the next day and bought 3 more as there were some spots that were thin.

Turned out great and with the right amount of paint can be done in an afternoon. I probably wouldent have needed so much paint if it wasnt so windy that day.

I initially thought about having the cage rino-lined, but I needed the project and im glad I went with paint. Theres a member on here that had it done and I think it turned out great too.
