Looks like I'm less tentative now. If everything stays good for the next
2 days, I should be able to find Denny's at 8:30 Saturday. Lookin
forward to getting out of town again for a few hours. I do need to sleep
sometime this week, though, and would rather do the short run this time.
Come back for the longer one when the weather cools a bit.
EdHBee@a... has also said he wants to un this weekend.

Can't make it this Sunday either. I'm heading out to California for a visit
with my daughter. She kinda likes bouncin' around in my Jeep off road and we
may head up to some trails around Big Bear Lake.
Perhaps the next weekend.

Subject: RSVP: Poll - Saturday Breakfast / Ride
This Saturday we will have a ride in "The Rolls" (coves near Saguaro Lake / Fountain Hills). The difficulty will be approx 2-3. It will be a shorter event (not the entire day). I would recommend bringing some lunch or snacks.
I have graciously and single handedly nominated Dan Weed (revolvr@a...) to be our ride leader seeing that he is familiar with these trails (Dan, you can cuss at me later). See his trail descriptions / photos in previous AZ_VJC mailings and his web site: http://members.aol.com/Revolvr.
We will meet at Denny's on 17053 E. Shea Blvd at 8:30 a.m. Denny's is located approx. across from McDonalds. It is on the south side of Shea blvd about a mile or so from the bee line (87) hwy. If you do not wish to join us for breakfast, you can meet up with us in the parking lot for our trip departure around 9:15.
EVERYONE, please fill out the "POLL". So far, we have 7 Jeeps going (EdHBee, Daver, Yucca-man, minihummer, Daballard, Revolvr and myself). The more, the better.
Good wheeling, and don't forget the CB's.

Subject: Saturday Breakfast / Ride Plans
Thanks for that fine nomination Eric. I'd be happy to be ring leader. Just
don't spend $40 M on a background check ;-) Follow Eric's directions to
Denny's, meet at 8:30.
Just a couple more things:
Let me know how difficult of a trail you want to attempt. The Coves/Rolls are
good because they offer all levels of difficulty. We could take a route that
leads to some Class 4 areas. These will require some lift, off-road tires and
probably at least an LSD in the back. Other trails are Class 3 or 2.5. At
breakfast we'll go over a map and make a plan, I can think of several routes
of varying difficulty and duration.
Then we'll re-convene at Butcher Jones. This is a short trip down 87, right on
Bush and a mile or two to the marked turnoff. Go left, another 2 miles to the
recreation area. They may ask you for 4 bucks parking fee. Since thats a
parking fee, tell them you are just passing through to avoid the charge. We'll
air down at the green gate about 2/3 around the loop. If you can't make
breakfast, you might try meeting us there at 9:30.
If you are coming and you are not: EdHBee, Daver, Yucca-man, minihummer,
Daballard, Revolvr or EricKool, let me know so I can get a headcount.
Monitor CB channel 4.
Bring water and munchies, no glass containers.
Look forward to it. I'm spending Thursday and Friday at a conference in
downtown Phoenix, so I get a real taste of rush hour traffic. I need to go
somewhere where I can go 2-3 MPH for hours and love it!

I'll be bringing guests with me so I don't know if we'll meet for b-fast or just meet you all at the Butcher Jones access gate. Either way, we'll be there. My guests have never been on a 4-wheeling adventure so I am sure they will have an interesting day <vbg> !!!
BTW: What CB channel?

Subject: Saturday trip report: The Coves
We had a good run to the Coves on Saturday. Six Jeeps showed up (with their
owners). The team was comprised of myself (Revolvr), Doug (DougB), Linda and
friends (minihimmer with a well outfitted JGC), Ed and son (EdHBee), Dave and
family (daver), and Eric (erickool).
Several of us met at the Denny's on Shea for breakfast first, then we all met
at the Butcher Jones Recreation area to air down. After prepping our Jeeps we
headed out about 10:30. I was volunteered to lead, Linda played tailgunner.
We decided we wanted to hit the harder trails so we went straight for the
fourth cove. The trail to the fourth cove runs down a wash for a while, then
up to a ridge line, then up and down between washes and ridgelines. The hill
climbs and descents between washes was where the fun was.
The hill climb to the fourth cove was indeed harder than the others. I got my
TJ crossed up once and had to back down a bit and try a different route, even
steeper but I didn't get crossed up and made it fine. Off-road tires, lift,
articulation and planning a good line are really keys here.
Following the ridgeline to the fourth cove, four of us didn't take the turnoff
down a steep descent to the wash that led to the cove. Instead we continued
down the ridgeline until it descended right at the beach. We had to turn left
and drive along the narrow beach to get to the cove. Two tires in the water
part of the time.
We stayed at the cove for a while before heading back. None of us went
swimming, except for Doug's Aussie who loves the water and wanted to play with
the other kids who were swimming. The cove had quite a bit of trash in it,
much more than I had seen at the first and second cove on a trip last month.
Dissappointing.
On the way back, me, Doug, Eric, and Ed went north to check out the connection
to the Four Peaks road. This is an easy route except for the first hill climb.
We all decided this hill was more difficult than any of the others, steep,
rocky and rough. We eventually linked up with FR 13, then FR 1832, to FR 401
then Four Peaks (FR 143). Quite a few cattle gates slowed us down.
All in all a good trip. It was a bit hot: when we planned this trip the
forcast was for a "cold" front to come through and cool things down to a low
98. Instead we got near record heat. Some of us wimps had hardtops and A/C.
;-)
The Coves/Rolls area is great for short half day runs; it is close to Phoenix,
especially the East Valley, and has good hill climbs and descents of all
Classes.
Next time I go I would like to go beyond the fourth cove to the Brownie Tank
Area, then north to link up with the 401 and east to Cane Springs.
I'll publish the pictures I took next week.

Subject: Next time, I'm going with YOU - Sunday Coves report (long)
Hello all,
I couldn't make the Saturday trip to the Coves, so two "buddies" and I went
on Sunday. My girlfriend, my daughter, and I were in my J-10 ( 2"
suspension lift, Chevy 350, TH350, NP208, 3.73 gears, Dana 60 posi rear,
Dana 44 front, 31x10.5x15 ), Mike and my son were in his '91 Chevy Z71
(stock) and Brian had his '98 Chevy S10 ZR2 (stock).
We arrived at the Butcher Creek area about noon, and went thru the green
gate. Mike promptly got semi-stuck in the moguls by the gate because his
auto front hubs hadn't engaged yet. They kicked in after a second, but he
was pretty embarassed. We followed the trail up thru the cattle guard, but
didn't go up the wash by the fence. We stayed on the trail, and eventually
came to the base of the "hill with the obvious trail" (I think it's the one
to Four Peaks) that Dan said to use as a landmark in the directions he sent
me. Thank you Dan, you're the best! On the way to the hill, we passed a
trailer with a beautiful, bright red full size Jeep Cherokee or Wagoneer on
it. I couldn't tell which it was, because the top had been cut off, and the
doors had been replaced with Bronco-like inserts. It had a full cage, and a
nice suspension job, but looked like it had been rolled.
Once we got to the hill we stopped and chatted with a family in a Bronco for
a while, then decided to try the ascent to the top of the hill. Brian went
first, flying up the hill like he was running Baja. I saw air under his
tires at least twice. He stopped at the top and filmed Mike and I going up.
I'll post a qt movie as soon as I get it converted. It was on this hill
that I realized the first of the limitations of my truck - I can't see over
the hood on steep hills! A spotter is definately necessary for anything
really nasty. Anyway, I nosed the left front tire into a bank and killed
the engine by getting of the gas to quick (rookie move!) After a short roll
back and restart I picked a different line and made it to the top without
further ado.
We cruised along the top of the ridge for a while, then decided to drop down
into the wash to the west of the hill. We were going to park and have a
picnic, but as soon as I shut off the engine, I saw smoke coming up from
under the hood. It seems that during the hill climb my battery got tired of
its home and jumped down to snuggle with the exhaust manifold. One corner
was melted away, and battery acid was leaking rapidly. It still had enough
juice to start the engine after I remounted it, so we decided to head back
to town for a replacement.
The next wash to the west seemed to have a trail leading back to the south,
so we climbed the hill and headed back for the rec area. This is where I
decided to go with y'all next time. If one of your group had a
semi-repaired, questionable vehicle that he was limping back to town, would
you jump out in front of him on the trail and go like a bat out of hell
until you were so far ahead that he didn't know where you were? AND fail to
mark which turns you took? My "buddies" did. It's ok though, the Jeep gods
watched over us and got even with them.
We toodled along to the south thru some really sandy areas and spectacular
views, eventually being stopped by the fence at the paved entrance road to
the rec area. No gate. Very frustrating. We could actually see the little
ranger booth, but couldn't get there. After backtracking for a while, we
came to a path going up the hill to the east - another blind run looking at
the hood. There was no trail at the top, so we went back down (nice view of
the trail this time!) and proceeded up the wash to the next turn off to the
east. This hill climb went almost straight up (boy, that's a long hood),
then straight down on the other side, a flat spot with a quick turn to the
right, and another down slope. My girlfriend had to get out and spot for me
on the last down slope, because it was filled with basketball sized rocks,
had a turn to the left, and was exactly 6 inches ( I measured ) wider than
the track width of my truck with a nasty drop on both sides. I'm not really
familiar with the trail rating system yet, but I think this series is
definately a 3+ if not more. Do you get bonus points if the trail is so
steep and loose that your spotter falls down while walking it?
The rest of the trail out was pretty easy, as this trail eventually led back
to the wash with the fence across it just above the cattle guard. Since I
didn't want to shut the truck off, we only waited about 15 minutes for my
"buddies", then headed back into town. We made it home around 5 o'clock
without any other incidents. Two and a half hours later my "buddies"
arrived in the badly battered S10. It seems that shortly after they lost
me, Brian tore one side of the front valance panel off of his truck. They
reattached it using his trouser belt, and continued on until he high
centered ( all four wheels off of the ground ) on his transfer case
skidplate. I had the only tow strap, the only come-along, and the only
highlift jack, so they stacked rocks until he could move again. About a
mile farther down the trail, Mike shredded his left rear tire. He didn't
have a spare (he wins the rookie award!), so they had to leave his truck
there and come in to town to get another tire. Along in there somewhere,
they realized that except for my son's water bottle, I also had all of the
food, soda, and water.
They left my house at Peoria and Cave Creek to go retrieve Mike's truck at
about 8 pm. I sure hope the gate isn't locked. Hee, hee, hee
I won't be able to make another run until after I mount another battery
tray, but that's ok. I'll wait until I can go with y'all. This might be a
good time to upgrade to a dual battery setup with the batteries in the bed
of the truck. I'll have to think about that........
Happy Motoring!

Subject: October Run
In the interest of planning ahead a little, how bout an overnight run for October...say the 10th and 11th; or 17th and 18th. One suggestion would be the ridge run between Four Peaks and Edwards Peak. Has Class 2 through 4 available. Those not wanting the class 4, can bypass on a class 3 trail. It's a long run, and would be good for an overnight. This trail may also connect to Reno Pass, for those wishing to explore alittle.
Basically, the route is FR143 (off SR87) to Lone Pine Saddle...then FR422 north to Edwards Peak. Those wanting class 4, can take FR463...which goes past some mines and other points of interest. This class 4 route will again hook up w/ FR422...which heads north to Edwards Peak. There may be a connection from Edwards Peak to Reno Pass, which I'd like to check out.
Weathers getting cooler...camping anyone?
Other suggestions would be a run to Mud Springs...a definate class 4. This could be a good day run. I was on it 2 weeks ago and had a great time. This run has several good rock crawls and a VERY challenging hill climb. Could be good for camping also, but can definately be done leasurely in a day.
