Subject: first run
Hello all -
The J-10 and I made our first off-road excursion together today. I found
some motorcycle/quad trails out around 101st Ave and Jomax and just had to
try it. There were some pretty interesting spots, including a point where
the trail crosses a wash about 20 feet deep and maybe 6 feet wide at the
bottom. The sides are steep enough that my copilot and I were hanging from
the seatbelts on the way down. A CJ / TJ / YJ / whateverJ wouldn't have had
any trouble at the bottom, but I dragged the rear bumper on the downhill
slope while I was climbing the uphill slope.
The truck only had two problems: First, I have TOO much articulation in the
front. Yes, you read that right. Too much. While climbing a nasty hill
filled with moguls about 2 feet deep, I steered around a rock the size of a
small refrigerator and rubbed the top of my passenger front tire against the
top of the fender flare. Now I have about 2 inches of extra flare in my
flare. A longer set of bump stops will provide a short term fix, but I
really need about another 3" of lift.
Second, the Cherokee bucket seats I installed today interfere with the
transfer case shift lever, so I can't get into 4 low. I need to remove the
lever and bend it so that it will clear the seat. Didn't have any trouble
climbing the hills, though. That V8 torque does come in handy.
Anybody have any suggestions for a 2 or 3- trail for next weekend? Anybody
want to come along? If you come, I'm afraid that you will have to endure
the company of a '91 Z71 Chevy. I have tons of respect for the "little"
Jeeps, but if my 4000 lb. beast breaks and needs a tow back to civilization,
the Z71 might have a bit of an advantage there. Besides, his wife is going
to babysit my kids, so I kinda have to let him come.<grin>
Have a good week!

Welcome to AzVJC! I don't think I can join you on the 26th, but would
like to know more. I'm fairly familiar w/ the area from US60 down to
Florence and over (east) to White Canyon Wilderness Area, but have never
heard of Flat Tire Canyon. Could it be Martinez Canyon?? That's a good
run w/ some fairly sharp rocks, so I see how it could be called Flat
Tire. Could you shoot the group a note on directions and trail info?
Thanks

I believe Flat Tire Canyon is in the Tonto National Forest south of Picket Post Mountain. I think. They say it is an easy trail to find. I don't much beyond that.
Martinez Canyon is a different trail altogether. Beautiful spot! I scouted the area several times in early 1997 but never drove the trail. My little Geo wasn't really the best vehicle for it. I was working with BLM back then to work out an adopt-a-road deal for the AZ Lo-Rangers 4WDC but a different group of people 'jumped the gun' and opened the trail just prior to the 1997 4x4 Jamboree. Because of that the BLM is a little hesitant to allow adopt-a-road agreements in that area. Hopefully we can convince them to change their minds. The initial Martinez Canyon trail was somewhat dangerous and not the least 'tread lightly.' There were a couple of roll overs. Since then the trail has been gradually tamed so that the dangerous spots are less dangerous and the trail is now being driven by more people than the just extreme 'wheelers. Anyway, I am interested in running this trail sometime during the winter months -- even though the trail will probably be wet.

Sorry, I'm not going to be able to make any regular updates to the

If anybody has updates or trip info, send it on, and I'll get it

How about a short run to the Rolls between Saguaro Lake and Four Peaks road.
There are a number of trails here, generally rated Class 3. I think there are
at least 4 trails leading from the coves (via Butcher Jones Rec. Area) to Four
Peaks Rd (actually to Cottonwood Camp, FR 401 which leads to Four Peaks via a
Class 2 road).
We could take one direct route for a short trip, or explore several trails or
the coves for a longer trip. I have a couple of pictures at my web site. Very
scenic Sonoran Desert and close.
From the areas I've been on, the Class 3 parts are fairly brief but
challenging especially for newcomers.

Sounds fine to me. From the write up, there's class 2 through 4
available. The further into the Coves (aka Rolls) you go, the harder it
gets. I'd be up for some of the more challenging stuff (Coves 3 and 4),
but it looks like there something for everyone. We could take a dip in
the Salt also, not a bad idea for a hot day.

Hi,
I'll be available for a short-medium (no all day crown king) run this
Saturday. Is any one going anywhere, or interested in going? Drop me a line.
Thanks,
Eric Kool

Might have to go, just to change things around here. Working mornings
and then taking evening classes is killing me. May as well have fun
instead of sleeping. I won't know until later in the week, though if
I'll be able to make it.

I'm now posting this to the group to see if I can entice / arouse any more
interest in this Saturday's run. So far Revolvr, daballard and erickool are
going. Yuccaman is a tentative. Any one else?

Dan,
This sounds absolutely perfect. Doug? (daballard@p...) is also
interested in joining. How about meeting at Denny's in Fountain Hills at 8:30
a.m. for breakfast. Denny's is located on 17053 E. Shea Blvd, approx. across
from McDonalds. It is on the south side of Shea blvd before you get to the
bee line (87) hwy.

When and where do we meet? I'll check back in Thursday night. I need a 4x4 fix even if it's hot outside! Work is driving me nuts!
