Nope, never been there. I would really like to do some trails that go to some
of AZ's ghost towns. I really like the old mining history.

I've been thinking of heading out this Sunday. There's a class 4 trail I'd like to check out...not too long of one...off SR87. If anyone is interested, shoot a note and we'll set something up.

I'd like to give it a shot. Which trail are you thinking of? Any way we could move it to Saturday? This is football season you know. ;-)

I would be interested in trying some ghost towns too. There is a good web site for ghost town information, at www.ghosttowns.com. This site provides information on the condition of the sites, and some pictures, but does not provide much on how to get there (intentionally).

There were several along the CK trip or not too far off side roads: Columbia, Humbug, Oro Bell Mine, Kentuck's Cabin, Fort Misery. I could go back to the CK road and spend some extra time exploring these sites. Perhaps an overnight trip.

There is another ghost town called Constellation that has standing buildings. It can be accessed from Wickenburg via a 4WD trail (probably Class 2 or 3-). There may be a route to it through Constellation Wash from Senator Hwy or the Castle Hot Springs Road. Stoddard's CK web site mentions briefly driving that wash, but I have no idea how difficult it is or what the route is.

The trail if FR 1704 to Mud Springs. It goes to the Mud Springs Hiking
Trail Head. It's off SR87, bout 8.5 miles past the Four Peaks trail turn
off.

As to timing, I can't make it on Saturday, due to a committment I
have...so Sunday works best for me. Perhaps if we leave early enough on
Sunday, we could get back in time for some games. However, the trail
write up says the going is slow. It's only a 4.5 mi trail one way (9mi
there and back), but it may take some time. Here's the write up:

"This trail if not for the novice driver, it also requires a vehicle
that is modified for this class of trail. Do not attempt this trail
without help." ...Sounds great already!!... "The trail has many large
rocks and steep climbs and one section about 200 yards long has large
boulders and is very challeging. The trail climbs from 2300 feet to 4000
feet in 4.5 miles and dead ends at MudSprings. From there you retrace
your route back. Count this trip as taking most of the day as it is slow
going and very challenging."

Directions: 8.5 mi past 4 Peaks trail on SR87...turn east at the
Sycamore Creek bridge.

The write up is found in one of the Jeep 4 Wheel Drive Trail Guide Maps,
and I've found their trail rating to be a little on the conservative
side.

Let me know if you can make it this Sunday, and we'll set a time. Sorry
about not being able to shift to Saturday. In the future we'll need plan
for Saturdays, at least until the season's over (unless, of course Ohio
State is playing :).

BTW, my reference to 'conservative' is that they rate it a little harder
than it actualy may be...for my experience on their other write ups.

Well, I see we're up to 21 members! I'd like to hear from you all and let us
know what kind of rides you would like to try. We have people with all levels
of experience. Some of you may never have taken your Jeep off-road and you're
looking for a fairly easy trail to get your feet wet. There are good trails
out there for this. Some of you may be bored with anything less than Class 4.
Good trails for that too.

Some of you are more interested in hunting down remote ghost towns, or perhaps
rockhounding, or camping in remote areas. A lot of us have these interests
too.

So drop us a line and tell us where you are located and what kind of trail
runs you want to try, and we'll set up a few runs.

Hi Dan,

My name is Eric Kool. I believe I was approx number 6 to join the AZ VJC
mailing list. I drive a 97TJ. I brag about carrying a tow strap, shovel and
hi-lift, but I play it safe, hence my 3" lift. (I use the lift to keep me out
of trouble, not as an added opportunity to get in trouble).

You asked about the kinds of rides I like. I prefer somewhat larger organized
rides because my wife and kid like the camaraderie. Most any kind of ride is
OK, but I'd like to stay away from the extremely easy and extremely hard
rides. Anywhere in the middle is OK. I live in Phoenix (24st and Cactus).

I also wanted to mention that I enjoy your web page
(http://members.aol.com/Revolvr). You have done a fine job of describing the
trails, and you should know that it is not in vain. Based on your
descriptions, I will try at least one of them with my boss who has a Range
Rover (he always likes to rely on a Jeep to bail him out).

My recommendation for our new virtual club is that a MAJOR ride/event be
organized well in advance (say 4 - 5 weeks in advance). Just set a reasonable
date. I believe that more people will join if they have a single large event
to look forward to rather than the scattered adhoc weekly runs. The weekly
runs can ofcourse be maintained and arranged between members and facilitated
through the mailing list. However, someone (you would be the best candidate)
should announce entire group events that only happen, say, once every two
months.

By the way, I noticed that the mailing list has a "voting" feature. In other
words, if you suggested a date, you could poll how many people would join vs.
decline.

Just my two cents.

Regards,

Eric

Greetings y'all

I would prefer to stay on the easier trails at first to get used to the
truck. I still haven't taken it off the pavement yet, but the time is
close. Tires and tune-up were done last weekend, the new radiator went in
today, and the shocks and seatbelts (!!!) go in tomorrow. I would love to
tackle some of the harder trails once I learn what to expect from the truck,
but for the shakedown period I'll stick to the "easy recovery" areas. I've
been thinking of using Schnebly Hill Road between Sedona and I-17 as an
initial annoying rattle locator. May not have time tomorrow, but possibly
next weekend.

Happy Motoring

Purhaps we could plan a combined 4x and camping overnight, maybe in
October. The ridge trail from 4 Peaks north is rated a 3 but has an
adjacent trail which is rated 4...a little variety for all. There are
others also. Good camping and 4x ing in the Bradshaws, for instance.

I'll be up on the Rim next weekend, on a 4x4 road west of Clint's Well,
and then backpacking into Clear Creek. I'll let you know how that goes.

Honestly, I would like to quit my job, and 4 wheel all the time. I would also
like to have more days off so I can go out in the boonies. But, for now I
will settle for anything that the group decides. I have only been on one run
(Pleasant to CK) and I really enjoyed it. We look forward to going again
soon.

I'm a little on the spontaneous side myself. Never need much of an
excuse to head out, to either 4x4, hike, camp, etc. Planning ahead is ok
w/ me, as are last minute excursions.

Welcome to the new members. One of the benefits of AzVJC is to learn
about good trails to do, so if you have any that you really enjoyed,
post the info to the group. Use of the 5 scale rating would be helpful:

Class 1 - Passable by all, improved gravel/dirt 2WD, no high
clearance needed
Class 2 - Easy, stock Jeep just fine. Generally 2WD.
Class 3 - Moderate, 4WD needed w/ some low range, Good AT
tires desireable. Stock Jeep Wrangler/CJ/Cherokee just fine,
though lifts would help.
Class 4 - Hard, low range 4WD, suspension mod highly
desirable/required, winch or hi lift jack a plus.
Class 5 - Oh my Gaud. High ground clearance, lockers front and
rear. Very Hard.

My son and I just got back from the Mud Springs Trail (FR 1704), which
is 8.5 mi past the 4 Peaks turn off on SR87. Turn right (east) after
crossing the Sycamore Creek bridge at SR87. (The trail is a little hard
to find, since there are a bunch of trails converging in this area).
Cross the creek, and you'll come to a 'T'...go left..you'll come to a
'Y'...bear right (don't cross he creek again)...follow the most used
path. Trial and error may be needed, but you'll find it, since the other
trails seem to peter out.

This is definately a class 4 trail, with a 4+. The beginning is rocky
but not too bad. After awhile, it washes out in places, which makes it
fun. Some good rock crawling, w/ plenty of DG (decomposed Granite),
which makes for some slick surfaces. Some pretty challenging spots. As
you get to about 3,700 feet, there's a little used trail that goes off
to the left, which heads down into a large wash (...looks like some
possible camp sites - though cattle are all around). FR1704 goes to the
right at this trail junction. From this point on there's plenty of
quartz around, though we saw no signs of mining. Continue up the hill
and there will be a small corale on the left where this part of the
trail dead ends at a fence. FR1704 actually goes right just before this
point. This part of the trail appears little used, but is passable.
It'll drop down into a bowl. From here the trail heads up a hill to the
south. This is the REAL challenging part. A 4+ . Since my son and I were
on our own, we didn't attempt this part. I'm unsure if we could make it
in any event. At this point, we turned around and came back down. We hit
the trail at about 11:30, and were back at SR87 by about 4:30.

Overall, an excellent trail, w/ a number of challenging spots. Some
modifications highly desirable for this trail.

I am planning on prerunning the Flat Tire Canyon Trail on Sept 26, 1998 for the upcoming ASA4WDC 4x4 Jamboree. You are welcome to join me and Arizona Lo-Ranger 4WDC club members on trail. Flat Tire Canyon is rated 3.5 on the ASA4WDC trail rating scale and has a good (read steep, loose, rocky) hill and some moderate rock crawling obstacles. I have never been on this trail so I can't tell you much about it. The Flat Tire Canyon Trail is located near the Florence Junction - Box Canyon Area east of Apache Junction. If you are interested, please email me.

Additionally, my boyfriend is planning on Pre-running the PowerLine Trail in Sepember (probably on Sept 19). This trail is located near the Oak Flats Campground between Superior and Globe-Miami. He drives an awesome 93 Dodge Cummins 4x4. If you are interested, please email me.

Both of these trips are in conjunction with the 25th Annual ASA4WDC 4x4 Jamboree being held the weekend of October 16-18 in the Florence Junction - Box Canyon area. For more information visit http://asa4wdc.org

Oops! Sorry for jumping in like that!

My name is Linda Luik. I am a member of the Motorola Dust Devils 4WDC and a founding member of the Arizona Lo-Rangers 4WDC. I am also Conservation/Environmental Chair for the Arizona State Association of 4WD Clubs. I drive a 1993 ZJ Ltd with a 4.5" RE lift, 31x10.50r15 BFG ATs, American Metal Rock Sliderz, 4.10 gears, TracLoc (rear), PowerLoc (front), and a stupid bushguard which always gets in the way on the tough trails <grrr>. I have been 4-wheeling since the mid-eighties and enjoy any type of 4-wheeling. My previous 4x4s were a 1/2-ton SWB Dodge truck (great truck but the too many things were wearing out at the wrong time) and a dinky Geo Tracker (neat 4x4 but way too small for my tastes). I like the easy scenic stuff as much as the 4+ rock crawling venues.

This will be my third year volunteering to lead a run for the 25th Annual ASA4WDC 4x4 Jamboree. I usually lead easy trails for the Jamboree since it is fun to help out novice 4-wheelers. This year; however, I am leading an intermediate run: Flat Tire Canyon.

Oh, I guess I should mention that I am also a certified 4x4 Awareness instructor for the ASA4WDC.

Anyway, I am looking forward to some VJC trail runs. Anyting to get away from the pager(s), computer, and telephone!
