I've never thought of "minimum" requirements when doing a trail at this level. I've always wanted to be as prepared as I can be.

I would say you want lockers front and rear, 35" tires or larger, chromoly shafts for D44 and under size differentials... (Feel free to substitute D60's here) :D You could probably get by without the Chromoly, but you will probably be changing one or more axles, plan accordingly.

Substantial gear reduction from any one, or a combination of these:
manual trans with 6:1 of better granny gear, 4:1 transfer case, or an automatic trans. with an external cooler. Fuel injection is a good Idea, too.
Winch, tow points front and rear, Tow strap, Full Roll Cage, Spare Drivetrain parts (U-Joints, axles, driveshafts, etc.) Full tool kit (One with all the tools needed to work on your rig) Extra points for a Welder, portable air, etc.
Fire extinguisher, first aid kit, CB, Food, Water... Maybe a Blankey in case you have to spend the night...:D (Just kidding on that last one...) :D

Of course, if you are Tracy Jordan or Don Robbins, just steal Shnipe's rig, you'll make it!

Although you Could attempt the trail with less equipment, how much less will be proportionate to how much extra damage you make to the vehicle you are driving. The idea is NOT to be "That Guy"!

The blankie is a good idea. It gets friggin' nipply out there camping with the critters.

Of course, if you are Tracy Jordan or Don Robbins, just steal Shnipe's rig, you'll make it!

In Dennis' rig? You're kidding, right? It runs away by itself when it sees stuff like that...I heard it squealing all the way down the trail one time...no...wait...that was Dennis being chased by John...nevermind.

Although you Could attempt the trail with less equipment, how much less will be proportionate to how much extra damage you make to the vehicle you are driving. The idea is NOT to be "That Guy"!

There you go, hence, the minimum recommended requirements. It's about time to test out the son's rig on a good trail, don't you think?

Hahaha...hey...you just described your rig.

After running CD on Monday we ran the group up Anaconda. The beginning of the chute is getting full of loose rocks again almost making it a new obstacle for every person through -- kind of interesting in a way. The base of the first fall was pretty decent though.

I dunno, I thought Landslide was pretty Good...

Anyway, I told Heinz57 if his Buggy was broke, he could drive the CJ-7 that day.

(He can't reach the pedals in my buggy....) :D

Besides, it'll take him back to the old days of Carburetion, Dana 44's and a Jeep body to contend with!! :D

So, are you going to attend, or what?

Yeah, LS would have been a good tester. I was mostly ribbing you anyway.

Carbed rig on Anaconda -- cool. Might be time for a float (mal)adjustment just to make it a bit more interesting for BB, huh?

As to reaching the pedals, not all of us are on 7' high frames like you there my gigantic friend. Hell, I'd have to get a boost from you just to get into your buggy let alone reach the pedals.

So, are you going to attend, or what?

Maybe. I don't want to take up a spot that someone else might enjoy. I've run the trail and taken all the obstacles a number of times, although I am sure there's lots left to learn from the masters, and there's still obstacles on that trail that kick my butt depending on the day.

I'll play wait and see.

Been there, done that (Monday)! :D Actually was no problem except for when somehow managed to get in a goofy position there at the first falls. (always...blame...spotter <Barry> ;) )

Nah...he had me going great, just got the pass rear too far left and fell in hole. Again, not sure how I did that with my big a-s-s (compared to Barry's and Rick's TJ's anyway).

Had to work the winch with a dead motor for a bit before she'd fire back up. Oh well. Next time - no driver error and I will drive it!

Blame the fact that you couldn't turn the steering wheel. Works for me. Or the spotter. That works too. Or maybe it was the pants. "Do these pants make my a-s-s look big?"

Sheesh, you Jeep guys are gonna follow Bill?? Maybe I'll show up and curse him .. and he'll break both rear axle shafts on the first waterfall again! Haha, just ribbing you a bit Bill :D

Last time I ran through there.. those two rocks at the top of the last "lower" fall.. the undercut on the left rock was HUGE. It easily swallowed my 37" tire - don't remember if there was a bypass for those rocks - was too busy gettin awn it. My weber was fine (for you carb guys wondering) - and I was leading and didn't have a winch :D We may have spent 25 minutes running the whole thing, but most of that was waiting for Chris to poop.

I'll call you later Bill, might be fun to come out and take some pics for you guys

It's still a short trail when nobody has troubles, and 37s still are a small tire on the gatekeeper. Turds have cut a bypass to the left of it over the past 2 years although it is handy when you have to pull someone through, and the stackers continue to try and pave the chute. Some (thankfully just a few) try and run the exit in 2WD using wheelspin just to see if they can, and in the process further tear up the terrain. Standard inconsiderate trail closing activities.

please, someone talk me out of this if you think I'm getting in over my head (Joe Daro - you can speak up here). I'd like to do this but if its too much then I'll just go along with the intermediate run (and do anaconda next year). I'm not worried about damage... I just don't want to ruin anyone elses fun by slowing us all down. But it does look like a blast... and with only 5 or so jeeps so far, would be great learning for me. My jeep specs are in my user profile page. Its basically a tj f&r lockers, 35" tires, 5.13's, Alloy USA axles 30 spline f&r, winch and skids. I've got spares for axles, rear driveshaft, tierod, ujoint straps, etc. and tools necesssary for changing these. One of my concerns though is breakover angle cause I've still got the stock tcase xmember.

You'll be fine with that setup.

I ran it a couple weeks ago. Not in a TJ, but with a similar setup. Breakover angle is only an issue in a couple spots, but with your short wheelbase, you'll be fine.

If I can get some work done on the jeep this week, I'd like to tag along for this. If there's a lot of people, I'd be glad to give up my spot. I've run this trail many times.

Just want to give an update on rig specs for this trail. The trail was opened with rigs that had lockers, 33's and 35's" tires. Myself I had YJ with 33 muds, dana 30 front and 35 rear, arbs and no aftermarket axles. Not highly advised but with good driving skills it is doable. If you have done the terminators and predator then this is the next step but not a huge one. Do to the bypass:mad: it has become easier, though keep in mind we will not be doing bypasses on this trip.

We were up Anaconda on Sunday. The trail looks to be in pretty good shape although the second climb is starting to wear down a bit.

We were up Anaconda on Sunday. The trail looks to be in pretty good shape although the second climb is starting to wear down a bit.

My front locker stopped working for some portion of the first part of the trail then started working again. Time for new o-rings maybe.

So what are you trying to say Barry

Actually Billy, that line is from "Everybody Wants Some" off the album Women and Children First.

It's not the first time I've been wrong, and it wont be the last.
After I typed it, I kinda had the feeling I had the wrong song, but I was too lazy to correct it...:o

So what are you trying to say Barry

You have a winch on the back. Someone behind you can hook their rig to your rear winch without having to either turn around on the trail (nasty on narrow trails) or use a snatch block.

You could put a card reader on the back to accept payments for use.

Hey, anyone that does not have a winch and would like to try this run please contact me. If you have the right driving mentality and experience, good capable rig and a good friend to drive in front of you there should be no problem.Out of the six of us that ran this trail last Sunday, only one needed to use his winch. With good driving skill and rig capability, you will probably not need to use it. Always good to have one though.

Tom, maybe on Anaconda it'd be okay, but don't let him anywhere NEAR Annihilator... neither your Dana Turdy nor mine would ever be the same. And if he mumbles anything about heading to Matrix, toss your keys in the desert or something.

Hi all,

For those going, please remeber that if you are going to do this trail (no bi-passes) you have a very good chance for body damage. The gatekeeper can eat your windshield frame quickly. This is not to discourage anyone, just to let you know what your getting into. I hope to see you all this weekend.

Those planning on running the trail and would like to possibly avoid damage on the rocks might want to bring a semi - truck type mud flap. It has proven in the past to possibly prevent body damage which is just about guaranteed on this obsticle. The by pass which shouldn't even be there will be used for broken rigs so that we can clear them out at the half way point.

Yea something like that.... Actually I am watching the 2 year old and the 4 month old, and I am not sure that they are ready for Anaconda just yet...

Hey to everyone that's heading up to TM from the East Valley this weekend. I just saw where I-17 North will be closed from somewhere around the "Split" by the airport to Bukeye so they can remove those barriers from the recent construction. So anyone taking the 17 from the 10 will want to hit it on the other side of downtown at the "Stack", or just head up the 51.

They won't fit the front for sure, and may fit the back depending on year.

If you're running CrMo you'll likely be fine. If not, I'd suggest you be sure to have at least stub shafts and u-joints. Non-CrMo tend to spread the ears and the stock half-cicle clips pop off spitting out the cap. If your caps are tacked in place or you have full circle snap rings retaining the u-joint caps, you might fare a bit better.

There's just a few places on Anaconda where you really need that front end to climb vertically, and those are the places where the little axle will be under the most duress. Careful line choice and judicous use of throttle may keep the axle intact.

I am fresh out of stock spares and only have super-sized CrMo spares -- no help for you if you're running stock spline count axles unfortunately.
