Subject: The Coves at Saguaro Lake trip report

I went to the Coves last weekend. Couldn't talk any club members into going, but I did manage to drag my wife out there. That's the first time she's been 4-wheeling with me since our first trip along thr Four Peaks Road. A few times she cringed, closed her eyes and hung on to the OS bar for dear life. What fun!

The Coves are usually accessed via the Butcher Jones Recreation Area. Drive around the loop until you come to a green fence. Air down here and go on in, closing the fence behind you. Since you aren't parking at the Rec Area, you don't have to pay the $4 parking fee. Several trails also lead to the Coves from Four Peaks road. I have not tried these.

Topologically, this area is a series of roughly north-south washes. Between each wash is a ridge line. In general, driving along the wash is easy, it's going between washes where the fun begins. This requires usually steep or very rugged hill climbs and descents. I would rate the areas between washes as Class 3 for the first two washes. A number of trails lead between the washes, far more than Deuty's book suggests. In fact, there is a way out of the first cove that looks like it's almost straight up and slightly off camber! Definitely a Class 4 hill. I didn't try it. There are other trails along the ridge lines in some areas that Deuty's book doesn't cover. The scenery is great with good views of the Superstitions, including Weaver's Needle and of the Four Peaks.

We went to the second cove and stayed the afternoon, swimming and whatnot. We had the cove pretty much to ourselves. There was a hiking trail that leads up the ridge to another cove just east of the second cove. This cove has no beach and no Jeep trail leads to it. The shore line is steep and rocky, possibly with underwater overhangs. Looks to me like a good place for Bass fishing. If I can ever drag my butt out there early enough I may try this.

The only down side is that there is a fair amount of trash left in the coves, and a few beer bottles between coves (not to mention a few truck parts). I understand there is a Saguaro Lake clean-up activity that takes place in October. I may volunteer to help out - any excuse to go 4-wheeling.

I'd like to organize a team run to the third and fourth coves when the weather gets cooler, in 6 or 8 weeks. These trails are supposed to be more challenging than the first two. I think this would be a great run, and good for skill building for us less experienced folk. With all the trails in the area of all difficulty classes, this area is almost a four wheeling Mecca.

All,

Just wanted to let you all know we now have 16 subscribers and 3 invitations outstanding. We had a bunch of new subscribers since this past Tuesday 8/25. These are:

Welcome all! Since you are coming in the middle of this week, I want to let you know we are planning a Reno Pass run this Sunday 8/30. This trail is rated 3 to 3+ out of 5. We're just haggling over the time we'll meet. If you decide to come, please let us know so we get a good headcount beforehand.

Here are the details so far, courtesy Doug B.:

To get there, take SR 87 north to Bushnell Tanks/Sunflower
to the turn off (to the right) between MM 218 and 219. Pull
off where the sign points to Bushnell tanks, but last time I
was by there, I didn't see the sign. I'm not sure if I missed
it, or if it's gone...Anyway, the turnoff's fairly obvious.
We'll assemble there to air down, etc.

For those coming from the north-west valley, your best bet
may be via Shea Blvd, which starts at the northern end of
Squaw Peak Prkwy to points east.

You can tank up at Shea Blvd and SR87.

CB's monitor Channel 4.

Duety indicates the trip to be about 5 hours, not including to
and from the trail.

Just a note to say that we will be unable to attend the trip this Sunday. We
have a funeral to attend. We look forward to going on the next trip though.
Also, I checked out the web site, and the pics of my Jeep on the hill are
pretty good. One of the guys at work was impressed. Thanks to Yucca-man for
those. Hope everyone has a great ride, and look forward to hearing about it
when you all return. Maybe the group could do it again sometime, and then we
could go. Maybe I will have reverse by then too! If anyone knows a good,
honest, cheap tranny shop in Phoenix, that will not have me out of commission
forever, plese let me know. Thanks!

Put me down as a maybe I had planned to go hunting but everyone else
canceled on me. The way the last week has gone I am not sure what will
come up but it sounds like a fun trip. Storm deserves a reward and would
enjoy the trip. We had an attempted bruglery last week at my house and
between the alarm and Storm they deciced after kicking in the front door
that they did not really want in. Made for a nice weekend installing a
new door. If everything goes well I will try and make it I have all the
directions. By the way nice job on the web page.

Subject: New WEB page

Well, I was motivated after Jim put his WEB page for VJC together so quick. So
I finally have a first cut at my home WEB page. The address is:

http://members.aol.com/Revolvr

Of interest to this group are descriptions of hiking trails, camping areas and
4x4 trails in AZ - that I have been on of course. Also I have started a Jeep
Technical Page, kind of a mini-faq for the 98TJ. I also have links to Jim's
Official VJC page.

This, like any other WEB page, is a work in progress. I've built a table of
contents for most sections but have only written a few sections, which are
obvious by the links. You may also note an almost complete lack of graphics.
Obviously I don't have a scanner yet. (Do you suppose all my play money is
going to my computer, or my Jeep?).

Feedback is welcome. If I make any major changes I'll post a notice.

Happy trails!

You know, Larry, even after you get that reverse fixed someday you'll still be
known as the jeep with no reverse. I think it's permanent.

Welcome aboard to all the new members on the club. Hope some of you can
make it out to Sunday's run. Just post on the newslist or reply to one
of us if you plan to make it.

I'll be there promptly at 9:15...........err...9AM like it's been
suggested. How far are we looking from Chandler? About an hour or so?

Anyone have recommendations questions about what they want on the
webpage? I may try to move it to a shorter URL later next week, but that
depends on what new e-mail address I come up with to host it.
-guestbook?
-dealer links?
-Jeep history?
-Arizona history?
-Jeep troubleshooting?
-graphics?
-any suggestions?

OK All, I plan to be there at 9 AM sharp. Doug, did you get a good list of
everyone coming? I haven't gotten any e-mail in a day or so.

If you are planning on coming let us know.

I have a sick puppy that we may have to take care of Sunday. (Well, she's 9,
not really a puppy, but she's our girl). If I'm more than 15 minutes late,
leave without me.

Looking forward to it.

Doug
Dan
Jim L
Jim F (a maybe)

That's all I've heard from. If there are others, shoot us a note so we
can keep an eye out for ya. Will log the trip, and post a description on
the Web page for those who can't make it.

Me too. Haven't been out since I got my new tires (went from 215's to 30").
I'm getting my exhaust manifold replaced tomorrow. Have fun, and be safe.

Subject: Reno Pass Trail Run

Had a good run yesterday. Those attending were DougB(me), DanW/Revolvr, and JimL/Yucca. Had some good challenging spots (say...3 to a 3+), and a narrow pass that Yucca described are a good pucker-upper. The concensus was that it was a tad more challenging than CrownKing.

Jim and Dan took some pictures which will likely be making their way to the Web site.

If your wanting to go...the Bushnell Tanks sign is no more (used to mark the trail start). There are 2 turn offs at Sunflower (SR87)...the first goes to what looks like a construction yard. The second is just a 100 feet or so further up the road, and almost immediately crosses a wash. This is the one you want. The beginning of the trail is quite rocky, so you'll definately want to air down. You'll be following FR 22 and will come to a wide open area fairly soon. Stay to the left, and you'll find the trail. You'll need to go left at FS524 (bout 2.4 mi from start of trail). One spot where we took a wrong turn was after the pass...there's a Y and the trail appears to go off to the left. The right Y drops down a hill. You want to do down the hill. If you make a wrong turn, you'll see a rock on the left where someone has thoughtfully painted "Turn Back". This was but one of many clues we found that told us we took a wrong turn :)

Some washed out spots were fun, and the views from the pass were very good. The narrow spot (on the east side of the mountain) was tight, but not too bad. Wouldn't want to do it in a big truck, though.

The end of the trail is also quite rocky, so take your time.

The run took us about 4 hours, w/ several stops along the way. We came back via Apache Trail, and took a short detour on the FR to Tortilla Ranch. There's some good rock climbing there, which I'd rate a 4. We all made it, and actually, it can be done w/ a stock TJ w/ 30" tires (I did it shortly after getting my TJ -before mods-, though I banged a couple of times).

If you have any questions on the trail or directions, just shoot us a note.

The first 2.4 miles is along FR-22 and this is a class 2, although there was a wash with axle deep water at the start of the trail. After that the going is slow. The trail is narrower than Crown King, very narrow in a few places. Lots of loose rock. The whole trail is only 10 miles long.

> Jim and Dan took some pictures which will likely be making their way to the Web site.

At the end of the trail was a sign that said "this road is unsuitable for public use!". Made a great photo op.

> If your wanting to go...the Bushnell Tanks sign is no more (used to mark the trail start). There are 2 turn offs at Sunflower (SR87)...the first goes to what looks like a construction yard. I thought the sign said "#ur*%$ack"! The other clue we were off trail was the distance to the next GPS waypoint was getting longer. This side road is on the Topo and it looks like it may go to some structure. Maybe some other time we'll investigate.

Closer to the pass was another road which turned South. Doug and I theorize this could lead to FR-244 and Four Peaks. Doug and I have been known to be wrong though ;-)

Couple of other notes. There doesn't appear to be Gas in Punkin Center, although there are a few bars. There is a Cellular radio tower in Punkin Center, so your cell phone has a good line of sight along the trail once you get over the pass.

And we did it without airing down or disconnecting sway bars. It was rough! And tires caught air sometimes. Disconnecting and airing down really make a difference.
