I am installing a lock-rite into my 92YJ D30 and I'm stumped on ONE question.

They say to take a file and try to scratch the cross shaft to check for hardness. If it scratches, I'll need a new one.

The problem... WHAT is considered a scratch is very subjective. I mean, if I take the file and just run it over the metal with a little pressure... NO scratch. If I put my weight behind it... big scratch.

So my questions... is my shaft hardened? (Yes... I left myself open on this question)

Thanks.

Big pressure = Big scratch ... Or a groove?

If it's only a visible scratch and not more like a cut groove, it's hardened sufficiently to act at the bearing surface it will need to be when the spiders are turning. :) ;)

It's not the $20... it's the fact that I was tearing into it last night and didn't want to stop 1/2 way through it.

did you finish it??? if not get the hardended cross shaft.... The two lockrights I've bought for a D30 and a front D44 ... I picked up the shaft... no question.. It's new, its hardended and I don't have to worry about it

tip on the d30 lockright install......DO YOURSELF A HUGE FAVOR and use the correct size punch to remove the roll pin.... Mine was a pin to get out after I FUBAR'd it with a drill bit used as a redneck punch

no brainer........ get the hardened cross shaft!
If it scratched (you can catch your fingernail in it) it is NOT HARDENED
if it is not hardened it WILL BREAK (or bend, lockup and causee other break)
if you finished install with non hardened, the question now is do you want to replace it in the comfort of your garage or out on the trail?

oh crap!!! I just posted without using shift button:eek: (see spelling thread)
looking for hiding place from the spelling police:eek: :D

Ironic that you mention that. I stopped on by there today and guess what... OUT OF STOCK! Looks like everyone got a lock rite and shaft at the Saturday super sale (except me of course).

Dammm!

However, Cole did hook me up with a source so I'm good to go.
