I'm trying to pull the rear hubs off my 1983 CJ5 so I can get the trac loc rebuilt. They are STUCK. Whats a good brand Hub puller and where can I get one? Anybody had a hard time getting thier hubs off?

I've used the generic 3 jaw puller from Autozone. Here's a link to Stu Olson's site. I don't know if it's the same on your CJ, but it worked great on my XJ.

Rather than pull the hub from the shaft, why not simply unbolt the backing plate and pull the whole she-bang, (axle, bearing, backing plate & all) out just far enough to allow the shaft to disengage from the diff?

My thoughts exactly.... there is NO REASON you should be removing hub from axle.... you will NEVER get back together properly (hub is supposed to be PRESSED on, axle cuts groves in hub... if you do not line up properly, might as well throw it away)
unbold retainer, turn brake drum around and put lug nuts on 3 or 4 turns... use brake drum as slide hammer

PS don't bother getting tracloc rebuilt.... they are JUNK (hence nickname crackloc). When working properly, they only help in sand or snow (NOT rocks/off camber stuff).
suggestions:
open carrier with lock right
detroit locker
wait untill you have money for either of above
Call 4Wheelers (or any other shop that is not just trying to sell you something you DON't need) to substantiate my advise

Wow! Are you saying the Trac-Loc on my '97 TJ is worthless on the 3.5 areas we have traveled? Our dealer mechanic said the limited slip was a great thing to have. I know it cost me more money to have the differential oil changed because of some special oil they add. :confused:

It all depends on what you are running and how you operate.
Trac-locs work fine in rocks and off camber with moderate sized tires and finesse driving style.
Gonzo technique and/or larger tires start breaking things.
Taking the hub off a D20 is not recommended...pull the whole axle shaft.
If the rig is basicly stock and tires are 33 or less, rebuilding the trac-loc is your call. Otherwise , since you are already inside the rear end, a locker upgrade may be in order

so I made a bit of a sweeping generalization... I was speaking of the mod 20 trac loc (what he has)... I have no experience with the mod 35 trac loc. Mild off camber stuff, anything is better than nothing. If Jeep is daily driver, expect clutches to be worn and usless around 40-60k.
If someone offered to replace my open carrier rear diff with a trac loc for free, (for me) it would be a no brainer.... "thank you, but no. I'll just wait till I can afford/ find a deal on a locker (jeez is that how I got lock rights / detroits in 5 of my 6 Jeeps?).
Just my humble opinion... not like I worked at one of the best 4wheel shops around and I've owned over 50 Jeeps :eek:
BTW, I've had a tru-trac (gearless posi by dyaneer/detroit locker) sitting on my bench for 4 years now... with the lockright in rear axle (XJ), I have not found it worth the time to put in yet:D
