Hi my Brothas and Sistas. I'm a newbie here. Looks like a fun and informative site. I have some questions. I have a model 20 rear end with CC stamped on it. So that means 3.31 gears with Trac Loc. The Trac Loc doesn't work. So either it is wore out or someone took it out. After I get the cover off is there a way to look at the carrier and see if it still has Trac Loc? Is there a sorce of info on how to rebuild Tra Loc? And does anyone in the Valley rebuild Trac Loc?

Is the mod 20 in your CJ or your J10? Traclocs (expecially in rear) do wear out quickly (excessive sliding on clutches when driven on street). Almost all CJ's (most common exception is ones that had Quadratrac/full time) had tracloc in rear. Tracloc carriers are also known for easy breakage (hence nickname "crackloc").
Options (4Wheelers Supply is great with these):
just leave it
rebuild tracloc (expecially for rocks, I think they were useless to begin with)
replace spiders with lockright (not really good ideas due to fragile carrier)
replace with open carrier with lock right (better)
for above options, you must be aware of low strength 2piece axles:eek:
great swap:
mod 44 from scout: much stronger, about same width
Waggy 44's much stronger, wider so mods necessary

I hope this helps

Both the J10 and the CJ have Model 20's. The J10 is stamped CC for Trac Loc. The CJ is stamped BB for not trac loc. Is this correct? And are the clucth plates visable with the cover off?

Thanks

You should be able to see the clutch pack if you have a tracloc or just the 4 spider gears if you do not.

actually, I believe the clutches are nominaly visable with the cover off (you will see sides). You will not be able to see wear though. if you lift entire rear axle, and turn tires, if both go same direction is tracloc/some posi... if they go opposing directions is open. I would suspect tracloc in the CJ (spread torque between wheels to compensate for weak 2piece axles) open in the J10 (has one piece axles);

tracloc is much larger (more squared ends case than the open (bell shape)
