I ran the Box Canyon / Martinez cabin run last weekend in preparation to run it again on December 30th, with some friends from work.
We will be running stock JEEP Liberties (RENTALS!) . . . Yes, I will get the insurance!
Anyway, I pre ran these trails last weekend (December 16th) in a Liberty rental, and it was a piece of cake. I had to put it in 4WD low range twice all day - once to make it over "the rock" in the middle of Box Canyon, and once up by the cabins at Martinez canyon.
Stock and near stock vehicles and inexperienced drivers will work fine.
Come on out with us and check out some of the most spectacular scenery Arizona has to offer!
I plan on selecting a meeting spot somewhere along the way out there - I need to see who is going first and I'll post time and place. It will be Saturday morning around 8:00AM - 8:30AM.
Check back for updates!

May have to join up on that one. I'm taking my KJ with my buddies Taco out to the Coke Ovens Tuesday or Wednesday, but I could always go back out for some more fun!

COME ON ALONG ! the more the merrier.
I heard that the Coke Ovens trail was in bad shape. I was up there last weekend, and some people were comming back from there, and said that they had to turn around.

Hi, Allen . . .
How hard was it to cross all those boulders where I was parked?
It looked too tough . . . even for a rental JEEP!

Hmmm, there was just a group that went out there and it doesn't seem any worse than when I was out there in July. Coke Ovens run 12/21 (http://www.virtualjeepclub.com/showthread.php?t=18811)
Eh, worst case scenario we go out, can't get there and turn around, but I think it'll be OK.

It's been awhile since I've been out there, but I can't think of any part of that trail that could be so bad as to prevent getting to the ovens. Maybe they turned around to avoid crossing the river?

I was out there a few months ago with some friends. We started near FJ went thru box canyon, to the coves and out thru the river and over the RR tracks. My friend made it in his stock Tundra. He had a few hard times and his rear bumper got a few dings. He did slow us up a bit, but if he can make it I know someone in a stock Rubi can...

Maybe it was the big rock by the fence post. It looks bad from a stock 4x4 point of view.

Does ONE have to have a Permit for this Area? if so, where do you get them? cost? Or would i be fine without?

You are supposed to have one to cross Land Trust property, which you have to do to get into the area. Its $15 and you can pick one up at the Arizona State Land Department, 1616 W. Adams in Phoenix (down by the Capital and all the other bureaucratic-type buildings). If you print out a copy of the application (http://www.land.state.az.us/programs/natural/rec_permit.pdf) and take it down there you can probably have it in your hand in about ten minutes.

Okay, this is my first post so be gentle!
I think that any Jeep should be fine getting out to the Coke Ovens. I dont personally know about the river crossing though.
The only problem will be that the land owner of the coke ovens does not want people going there anymore. (stupid vandals!)
I made it out there and back in a 100% stock 4runner. Tow hitch scrapes, but your jeeps have a little more ground clearance I think?
