Hey Guys,

Am wondering if there's an off-the-shelf item/insert, that can be welded into a tube (in this case 1.5dia x .120 wall), that would serve to attach another tube with a heim joint sticking out of it? Basically a "clevis" or "yoke", if you will...put the heim joint between the ears of this clevis, and run a bolt thru.

Thanks,
Tom

Well, not really off the shelf, but farm implement places will have the "clevis" item you're looking for. I'm thinking it will need to be welded to another shaft to fit into the tube and clearanced to provide the misalignment a Heim can obtain.
What I'm thinking of is basically a hydraulic ram end. They are normally internally threaded to fit on the ram's shaft.

why not just uses a weld in threaded insert and a jam nut on a 3/4" heim ??? weld the insert in.... cap the other and of the tube.......

Simple ???

MAN DO I EVER HAVE TO LEARN TO READ ... SORRY TOM...

This is the same sort of joint used in some DE hydraulic ram steering systems.

Looks like Poly has one:

Is this what you mean?

Why not take 2 shock tabs with ½ holes on center , use the ¾” heim with some misalignment spacers…. Run a bolt through to set spacing… take another piece of tube 1.75 / 1.5” what ever you need.. weld the shock tabs to that.. (cap the ends off) notch another piece of 1.75 / 1.5” material tube and weld that to the homemade “clevis” that you made with the shack tabs….

use these types of parts ...8817

poorly drawn like this :

Yeah, Barry...the trials and tribulations of leaf springs (SOA)!

Could do that, Jeff. But looks, how shall I say...HACK! ;-)

At least you don't (usually) have to pick them up of the trail and try and stuff them back into their buckets. Silly uncaptured coils.

All depends on the person welding and doing the finishish fab (box the sucker in grind hte welds down and paint it black... (black hides allot of bootie fab) ... hack maybe but you're only looking at MAYBE 6 bucks in tabs .. scrap tube (free).

I would work.. be plenty strong......

That item that Barry posted is what I'm trying to describe. But Jeebus H Tap-dancing Kryst...$55/ea?!?!

Don't think so!

Will figure something else out.

If we weren't closing down here at work for the next week and a half, I would take a piece of 1.5" OD rod, machine one end to 1.25" OD (to slip into the tubing), then machine two flats on the opposite end of the rod for welding some simple tabs to.

A variation on the clevis and Jeff's idea.

"Jeebus H Tap-dancing Kryst...$55/ea?!"

Santa's watching Jacobson !

Whats about using a peice of c channel or one side cut out square tubing instead of the shack tabs to round tube idea ?

Know anyone with a lathe and mill? Seems to me it would be fairly easy to make if you had the equipment. That's always the trick isn't it. The other trick is to get the time on it for free, because it'll be a few hours of work for the first one no question.

They don't give you keys to the shop, Tom? Go there off hours and have at it :)

The steering clevis might be the right concept, but it seems to small/weak for your needs.

Gonna have it done by next Thursday?

side note: as soon as next weeks trips are done, I'm dropping the rear and taking the springs
to Spectrac to have them add an antiwrap top half/leaf. I'll probably have the DS lengthened
while I'm at it since the stretch likely won't happen for awhile.
