Hey guys,
I am looking for some help with my cj7. It has the factory straight
six and carb. It runs great down the road at any speed, but as soon
as I take my foot off the gas the engine dies. This really sucks at
stop lights and while off road. Any ideas, or anybody know any good
shops I could take it to in the Buckeye, goddyear area.
Thanx,
Mark

1) Check the idle adjustment screw
2) Check all vacuum hoses for dry rot, checking/cracking. Not sure how old they may be but might be a good time to replace them all.
3) Low speed jet setting adjustment [don't think its this since it runs well at all speeds

If you don't have a vaccuum leak your computer for your carb could be the source of the problem. Or gas deliverly problems or......
Depending on what year your CJ is some have a computer controlled carb. The computer is usually located on the drivers side fender under the windshield water bottle. Not too expensive to replace. Supposed to help out the whole carb out.

with motor running spray carb cleaner on your carb at the gaskets and see if its leaking there it will idle higher when doing that to keep it running while you do this just bump the idle up

Don't wast your time messing around with the computer. I peeled my AMC sticker off my mine and found the real problem, a blue oval. There are several write up's on bypassing the computer. Do that. That worked great for me for a while then I stepped up to a (...I know...its a blue oval too) Motorcraft 2100 carb. Tons better! But I could never get it started after killing it on a steep incline. So my next best advice....

...go fuel injected!
But with a little tweeking, that 2100 carb could be great. Much cheaper then a Weber and you can get rid of 95% of the vacuum lines. Mine passed emissions with no problems either.

What you described is highly indicative of a bad (partial) ignition module
Take your ignition control module (3 bolts hold to lower part of driver's side fender skirt... electrical connections are a pain to disconnect) to checker/autozone/pepboys and have tested. theses things are multi stage ( so vehicle can run even if is bad). 2 yr warranty is about $18, life time is about $25... I keep spare mounted next to primary

although the carb (piece of crap) is a likely culprit, the cheapest+easiest+least invasive likely cause (and therefore the first I would check) is the ignition module.
ooops, exception.... check distributor advance diaphragm (see if it holds vacum)... either disconnect and plug (see if changes)
check for other vacum leaks (including power brakes) by pluging hoses and see if changes

Only problem you got with that thing is your e mail addy. You must have some kind of a complex where you have to go around and tell the world you are a pilot:D :D :D :D :D

Well now that its winter time the gas co. start to make the "smog blend" and add alot of stuff to the gas. This will foul the carb very fast, I need to have my Weber rebuilt but was thinking of a junkyard FI swap.

Doesn't seem like a lot of the folks here do.
Talk about DRAMA. Jeez. Quickly: Some guy on there went off on BeechPilot because of his e mail addy. And it turned into quite a battle to say the least. Then the guy found some other pilot to go off on, WOW! Some airline must have taken away the guys frequent flier miles.
Lets just HOPE the loser does not show up over here or we may all be in trouble...

The latest twist in this saga is that Jetpilot knows this guy (named barry) and has wheeled with him before.
