DAYTON, Ohio (AP) -- A woman suspected of killing her month-old daughter in a microwave oven pleaded not guilty to murder Tuesday.
China Arnold, 26, remained in the Montgomery County Jail for the video arraignment. Montgomery County Common Pleas Judge John Kessler kept her bond at $1 million.

Prosecutors, who plan to seek the death penalty if Arnold is convicted, had asked Kessler to hold her without bond, saying she has a criminal record and is a flight risk.

Defense attorney Jon Paul Rion argued that the bond should be reduced, saying Arnold is a loving mother who has cooperated with police.

Arnold stood with her hands behind her back, slowly shaking her head during the arraignment. She winced when Kessler announced her bond.

The baby, Paris Talley, died August 30, 2005. Arnold has three other children, boys ages 9, 7 and 4.

The coroner concluded that the injuries could have only been caused by the baby being cooked in a microwave oven, according to Montgomery County Prosecutor Mathias Heck Jr.

Investigators have said evidence that includes high-heat internal injuries and the absence of external burn marks on the baby.

How quick we are to judge someone we don't know about something we don't know anything about.

Did you know that the night before she was found dead, that the mother and father left the baby with a sitter? "The night before Paris Talley was taken to the hospital, Arnold and the child's father went out for a short time and left Paris with a baby sitter." http://www.cnn.com/2006/LAW/11/29/baby.microwave.ap/index.html

What ever happened to inocent until proven guilty?

You're absolutely right of course. I just get so upset when I hear about tragic happenings like this to little children. There is nothing in the world that a child can do to deserve such a horrific fate.

How about the recent death of the 3 year old here in Gilbert.

http://www.azcentral.com/community/gilbert/articles/1211brk-gr-falldeath1211-ON.html

<snip>
Family members told police children were running around the pool as they put up Christmas decorations in a backyard in the 600 block of East Julian Drive, near Pecos and Gilbert roads, when the girl's parents went inside.

Michael Ingram, the father, reported hearing a splash before Carolina came into the house, soaking wet, Duncan said.

Carolina's mother, Veronica, helped the girl dry off and change clothes, at which point she lost consciousness and Veronica attempted CPR, Duncan said family members reported.

They took the girl to Mercy Gilbert Medical Center and she was later transported to Phoenix Children's Hospital.
<snip>

Who the **** goes inside and leaves a three year old to run freely around the pool?

Dad hears a splash before she came inside soaking wet??? She had enough time to fall in and make an audible splash, climb out of the pool and come inside before they took any action? The idea to dash outside and rescue his child (after realizing what a DF he was for leaving her out there in the first place) at the sound of the splash didn't occur to him?

Again, not knowing all the details it's hard to judge, but given these statements, her parents need to be charged with child neglect at the very least.

Parenting should require a license.

The big hoopla on having a fence around your pool and doors that lock only make it a more challenging obstacle for children , nothing and I mean nothing will save your child from a pool except paying attention and knowing what, when and where your child is, nothing takes the place of an attentive parent or sitter.
We raised five girls along with a neighbor hood of other children, not one accident around the pool other than slips and falls from the running, no close to or possible drowings in almost 20 years, but no children under the age of 14 were allowed to swim without at least one adult. (someone over 20) not my choice the boss ladys and i never questioned it and now after all these years am glad we stuck to our guns on following thru with the rule.
I only hope more people watch instead of hoping the fence and locked doors do their job.
happy holidays.
