View Full Version : AZVJC BBQ - Thanks & concern

Thanks to Brandy and John for opening your place of business for another great BBQ. More thanks to all those that helped, whether at the grills, setting up the area, leading Toys for Tots donations, donating the raffle prizes, or in any other way to help us AZVJCers to get together and to contribute to others. It was great to see many “old” faces as well as to meet new ones.
It was a great time, however I did have some concerns, mainly safety:
A. Fast driving in the parking lot. We had lots of kids there and this is NOT a place for speed. I am sure that none of us would like for anyone to get hit, especially small children that will run out into the lot without thinking or looking.
B. Drag racing in the city streets. Sycamore Creek is great for that, plus there’s great visibility for safety there. It also reflects upon us, the AZVJC and Hunter Offroad.
C. Wall crawling. Not the time or place, unless a specific wall was brought in for this purpose. I don’t think we would like for Hunter Offroad to be kicked out of his place of work, nor for him to be put on the spot for repairing the damage. These building walls aren’t made a jeep to be rolling up on them.
Again, John, thanks for doing this!

Can't really argue with any of that... If there is one good thing here, 100% of that nonesense was the result of just two people which is a pretty small sample for everyone that was there...
The parking lot speed was my snafu; I came in a little "hot" after our street stupidity; which is actually quite regretable...
John works with and reps the the Maricopa Sherrifs Dept and it was pretty poor form to put him in a spot where a function he organized turned into a street race... Kinda wish I could take that one back.
Having said all that, it was a blast and the food, company and atmosphere were awsome...

Agreed, it was a little uncalled for to drag race. As for the wall climbing, well that was my thing, John asked me NOT to do it and I did it anyway. So i aplogize for that. There has always been a little playing around at the BBQ. Weather its wall climbing, jeep climbing or playing around on the ramp, it has happened since the FIRST BBQ. Once again, I apologize for what I did.

Let me ask this John....
Why are you and others sporting a different club emblem these days? I've been wheeling in one form or another since I had a driver's license and I've seen it all. I've seen drinking and drugs, littering, illegal shooting and dumping, vehicles leaving the trail for harder obstacles, unnecessary deaths and injuries and the oil left behind from supposedly responsible wheelers. We are killing our own sport. Keep in mind that many will do these things infront of their children. Our future wheelers. :(
If the truth hurts; so be it. Your response reflects on all of us.

Maybe you should ask the sticker question to the Rock Rats, the High Country Renagades, ARC, the Bratt Pack or the Undertakers... We're a small evolving crew who has our own style... It's not a slam on the VJC, I love the VJC and I've met a lot of very cool people here. Within that group I find myself gravitating to certain wheelers who have a similar style of driving that I do... I'm not sure what the sticker reall has to do with the rest of your question though...
I don't think any of us can dispute the negative impact that the above mentioned items may have on the sport... It's good to know that you don't engage in any of that and I think if you ever get your junk finished you'll see, when Shnipe and I are wheeling, we don't either. That said, we like to smash our junk in the ROCs... Hard. Even people who are generally considered hard core wheelers will comment on how we drive. Its just a style... If a person likes to tip toe through a trail, that's awsome... But if I'm on a designated trail, and there are some big ole rocks there, they're going to suck face with my rocker panels... I don't feel bad about that.
Here's the thing man, I'm not gonna hate on you if you start your own little club and slap Jessica Alba stickers on your junk; I'm sure there are a bunch of guys who can't wait to join. Point is we all have to be responsible out on the trail and you and me all have impact when we go out... Even the most careful of drivers impact the trail...
The sticker thing and the stuff you noted above seem like two different trains of thought... If you feel like I'm somehow being critical of the VJC by organizing the ROC, I think you're wrong, but it doesn't really matter... its just a sticker. To the best of my knowledge I've never done any of the stuff you've mentioned above out on the trail and until you actually get out and hit some trails with us you can't really assume too much.
If you're assuming right now I might be a little rough around the edges and party a little too hard, well I'm pretty sure the jury is in on that one and I'm not gonna try and pretend to be something else... I'm just an old HillBilly who is good at math and found his way out of the mountain... Unfortuntely I bring a lot of that Good Ole Boy mentality and attitude with me and my job has allowed me to be exactly who I am without much regret (the occasional apology yes - but I get to be who I really am - and for that I don't appologize).
I don't know if that answers your question or not... Not beyond clarifying or debating it more.

Ian,
Thanks for bringing up some good points. Yeah, things might have gotten out of hand a bit, but to certian extent, boys will be boys, and luckliy, no one or anything got hurt or damaged.. The important thing to me is then when I asked to cool it down, they did so quickly and realised the error of their ways. They were also very apologetic about when I stopped them. Also, they were quick to say they were sorry here on the board, which says plenty about them.
That is the difference between an idiot, and a guy who got a little carried away by the moment. I think most of us got carried away a little. At least no one rolled off the ramp. Thank goodness..
But yeah, next year, we will have to hold the "Hamster Dash" off site. :)

Thanks for owning up fellas... I was a little concerned as well... I have a two year old that despite our best efforts always seems squirm and take off running at the least opportune moment. Even though she wasn't there on Saturday, there were others that I am sure are in the same boat as me.
I have always been a hellion and have been yelled at many times for goofing off. Something about being a parent increases the concern a bit, but in reality, I still like to rip it up and still get yelled at from time to time...
Acting like a little boy will always be part of my personality, its just to fun to cut loose from time to time, besides being serious all of the time is boring. But it takes a man to own up to mistakes and apologize.
Thanks again! John (YJunk) and Joe (Flexy). And thanks again John (Hunter) for offering up your hospitality. I had a great time.

What's most odd to me... Frenchy didn't sound French when I was talking to him. But my mind was on food, and Mish was whining at me, so I was a lil distracted.

Joe, he may not have to complain about you spraying. Junky, I have some parts laying around and might be able to scrape together a single fogger wet kit to temporarily install on yjunk. The 2.5 wouldn't handle more than 150 for long. That's a big single hit for a four cylinder. I sprayed 100 shot on a SR20 2.0 Nissan engine for quite some time but at 125 shot, it wasn't happy.
Joe, what did you used to race.

John, et al
Thank you for your responses and taking ownership of what was happening. I have enjoyed wheeling with this group and learning from so many at the AZVJC. Let's keep this group strong, in our actions and responsibilities, and in the enjoyment of offroading in this beautiful state.
See you out on the trail.

Ben, I had an 86 Shelby Dodge Omni GLH-S,#294 of 500. Had a built 2.5 long rod motor in it, full super 60 kit, 3" exhaust and a Nicely built turbo. I built a nice auto trans for it with a hughes converter that had a stall speed of 4500 RPM and when at the track or street racing it either had a 175 or 225 shot on it. It was placed kinda far back from the throttle body, so it didnt hit SUPER hard. On the motor it dyno'd 318 HP (no bottle) @ 7100 rpm @ the wheels. It ran consistant 11.20's @ 124-127MPH on the bottle with a 27" tall slick on it. Got rid of that car and bought a 87 Shelby Daytona. It was kind of a slug, it ran 13.50's @ 118. Been looking for a 87 Shelby CSX or a 89 CSX-VNT to build again. Feelin the need for speed......:D
