My posts and cables were all covered in the pretty blue/green fuz...

Here's the procedure..
Remove battery, take one plastic dixie cup, put in two tablespoons of pool acid and put it in the cup and fill with water. Dunk the end of the battery cable in and watch the pretty smoke coming up. Presto! one battery cable with extremly clean pure copper end! :D
Seriously, my terminals came out brilliant clean like brand new! Yay!
Oh, gloves and eye goggles recomended...

I would suggest that rather than messing with Pool acid (caustic stuff)

Just go ahead and make the same kind of solution with good old baking soda... Works the same way and you can even keep it in the fridge to keep the odors away.

Or install a dry / gel cell battery (i.e. Optima, Exide, etc.) and never have to deal with corrosion again.

2nd that... replace the cables with some heavey gauge junk... (2 guage) and some new fittings ... no Mas corrosion

I used my last can of coke to clean that cat i splattered all over my driveway... damn... So, no coke no baking soda... I resorted to pool chemical. Actually next time I might start with pool chemicals, and end with coke...

Something to concider when messing with chemistry. Always Add Acid to water, and never the reverse.

A large amount of heat is released when strong acids are mixed with water. Adding more acid releases more heat. If you add water to acid, you form an extremely concentrated solution of acid initially. So much heat is released that the solution may boil very violently, splashing concentrated acid out of the container! If you add acid to water, the solution that forms is very dilute and the small amount of heat released is not enough to vaporize and spatter it. So Always Add Acid to water, and never the reverse.

Be safe, Andrew

Pretty scary stuff with Pool Acid. I've always used a tspn of baking soda and some water. Let soak for awhile and then scrub any access with a wire brush and rinse off.

Never had any pretty toxic smoke to watch!!
