Last night our phone was ringing off the hook. So finally at 9:15PM we decided to answer it. My son had hit a deer on I40 between Flag and Kingman in his '05 Ford Focus. Here is the email I got from him today:

Megan and I are fine.
We hit a large buck about 35 miles outside of Kingman, heading towards Los
Angeles. I was in the right lane and it was in the right lane. So I moved to
the left, but it followed me. Then started to head back to the right and ended
up hitting it, strateling the lane divider. I did everything I could not to
swerve off of the road.
I hit it on the driver's side and it came through the window on Megan's side.
Probably hit it at about 60 mph...so hard its rack went flying into the middle
of the highway.
Both of our faces hit the air bags, but they worked awesome, no bruses or
burns. Shatter proof window didn't shattered.
DPS was great there. They even came to the hotel to check us out later and
make sure we felt alright.
My car is most likely totalled, not quite sure if that is a good thing or a
bad thing. We got a rental car and continued traveling to San Clemente.
Dang, life is a vapor!
Have a wonderful Thanksgiving.

One Thing,
Brandon

The fatality between the I10 and US60 sort of cramped my drive home from work today.

Then there appeared to be another fatality accident (I hope not) at McQueen & Elliot tonight.
Oh and stacked up behind that was another accident from people not knowing how to obey LEO's.

Be safe. Please.

Glad to hear that your son and his wife are going to be ok. It has been crazy out their. You do not realize how much is going on. During this week that we have been in the hospital it has been like Grand Central Sation in their.

Like James said please be careful.

Damn Gina! Glad they are okay!

I hit a deer a few years back in my TJ going about 75 MPH coming down the hill on Beeline from Payson...

Glad I had that Bulletproof Mfg front bumper... No damage to the Jeep other than fur and blood.

Plenty of damage to the buck though. I actually went back to take a look at it, thinking that I would need to put it out of it's misery. Since I didn't used to carry a gun in the TJ and didn't have a knife, I was prepared to give it a good whack with my 6 cell mag light. No need, not much was left of its head.

glad he is safe. one thing i learned about deer is to do nothing but brake and keep the car straight. also, if he is just on the side of the road do not change the tone of your vehicle. the change of sound from 1/2 throttle to idle will startle them into running.....and there is a 50% chance he'll pick the road to run on

i used to be a firefighter in a rural area of Pa. we had so many calls of a car off the road because of a deer....and there was pretty much always a dead deer too. chances are the deer hitting the front of your car will not kill you, but a tree, cliff or oncoming car sure will. keep it in control.

oh, and the off the road with no dead animal usually had a breathalizer involved....then some cuffs :p
