I am new to the club and the Phoenix area but really look forward to getting
out to some of the many trails and rides listed on the web-site.
Are there any good maps/boks that shows the locations of such rides in this
area? Any suggestions are much appreciated.

If you use the Search Archive function in the upper right corner of
the screen and search for trail books, you'll find several posts that
identify some good books on the subject.

Subject: Loud squeeking noise
I have developed a loud squeeking noise coming from the passenger
front wheel when it is turned outward. Does not squeek when turned
towards the drivers side. I have pulled the wheel, inspected
everything I can. I have also pulled the steering stabilizer to see
if the noise was coming from there. It does seem to be isolated at
the wheel. I replaced the front control arm bushing on that side, it
was badly worn and I thought that is where the noise was coming
from. I have tightened the track bar also. Noise still there.
Could this be a ball joint? I replaced the ball joint on this side
when I went back to stock tapered knuckles. How would you tell if a
ball joint was bad? I pulled the drag link and checked the tie rod
end, it appears to be good. Any ideas? This is on my 00TJ.
Thanks for your help,

Welcome to the club. We usually have a number of runs going every week -
from mild to wild.
in terms of resources, try the "Guide to Arizona Backroads and 4-Wheel Drive
Trails", by Charles Wells. Most complete guide out there, w/ GPS waypoints.

Not sure about on your jeep, but a lot of cars with
disc brakes have a wear indicator that will cause a
squeek just as you are explaining. At first you will
only hear it with the wheel turned but eventually it
will become constant.
It's designed to be annoying enough so you'll find it
before the pads get too worn.

Hi All,
I lost the deal on my `98 XJ yesterday after three weeks of driving
it. Lousy dealership! Now looking for a different Jeep. I haven't got
a clue as to who might be honest enough to do business with and I'm
looking for suggestions and or referrals. Needless to say I'm a
little gun shy regarding dealerships right now but I'm willing to do
business with the right person.
My ideal jeep to start would be a stock 1997 Sport or Sahara w/hard
top.
Thanks,

Hi Joe,
That would be preferable but I am not quite ready financially yet. Probably
February or March would be the earliest I could do that and probably will
unless I find a fair deal sooner. The yellow jeep that was posted was
$18,000 and definitely out of my price range which is considerably less. I
am looking for a '97 or '98 Sahara with mileage under 65k or so.
Thanks Joe,

Wildcat SUV Pull from Cove 2, Dec 29, 2001.
Participants:
Steve Graham (AZLW4WDC) (Dodge Cummins tow truck)
Charlie Bab**** (AZLR4WC) (Chevy Blazer tow truck)
Scott Nixon (AZLR4WDC)(Big Red Dodge dump truck)
Don Munzer (AZLR4WDC, AZVJC) (CJ)
Gary (AZVJC) (FS Jeep Cherokee)
Wayne (AZVJC) (Liberty Sport)
Joe (AZVJC) (CJ)
Len (AZVJC) - (FS Jeep truck) Honorable Mention
Linda (AZLR4WDC, AZVJC) - (ZJ - trip leader)
Trail casualties: 1,500# chain.
We met at the green gate at the back of the Butcher Jones Rec Area. Don
Munzer and son put a campfire with the 12-pack of beer that was left
behind. Wayne and his family showed up in a brand new Jeep Liberty to
watch the action and to check out the trail on the north side of Saquaro
Lake. After waiting until 9:15am we took off for the second cove. The
new Liberty made an easy task of the first mogully hill by straddling
the deep holes and picking the right line. We took the easiest route in
to make sure it was a good route for pulling the burned up SUV out. All
agreed it was the best route. We made our way down to the burned out
hulk, did a little cleanup of the cove and then hooked the Nissan to
Steve's Dodge with the axle-side down. With the engine revving a little
above the idle mark Steve's Cummins-powered 4x4 pulled the hunk of metal
from its resting place. A short while later we were on our way up the
wash. Charlie in the lead (just in case), then Steve and the SUV, Scott
in his dump truck was behind. It was a good thing because the SUV kept
losing chunks of metal while it bounced down the wash. We got about 1/3
of the way up the wash when Steve got on the radio and said he hit
really deep sand and sank the Dodge. Yep! He had it almost buried to the
axles in a soft spot that he thought was the trail. After sinking the
Dodge, the tension was off the drivetrain, the transfer case jumped out
of gear and he lost traction. After digging him out, Gary pulled used
his MileMarker winch to turn the SUV on its roof for easier pulling (so
we thought!). We were off again. Now that the SUV was on its roof it
became a plow and started digging up boulders (bread-box sized and
larger) out of the wash. I'll bet those rocks hadn't seen daylight in
years! About another 1/3 of the way up the wash the tow chain (1,500#
test) snapped and had to be doubled up. The SUV was an easy tow over the
a low mogully hill that separates Coves 1 and 2, but Steve said he
wanted to avoid pulling it up anything worse so we found a much steeper
but less moguly hillclimb at the far north end of the Cove 1 wash.
Charlie went up first just in case, then Steve blasted his way up the
hill and made it about 2/3 of the way up before losing momentum. Charlie
hooked a tow strap to the Dodge and helped finish the pull up the hill.
We all got up the hill (steep and a little loose) with no problems and
started down the home stretch. Then the engine fell out of the SUV.
Right in the middle of the road. Leaking oil, of course. Steve offered
to take the engine so he dropped the SUV and turned around. It took 5
men (and no boys) to heave the engine unto the flatbed. Steve strapped
it down with a bunch of ratcheting straps and crossed his fingers it
would stay put. Charlie hooked up the SUV to his Blazer for the final
tug out of the coves. Did I mention Len Sullivan? Well, about this
time, Len made it to Cove 2 to help with the pull. When he got there he
noticed the furrows left by the SUV and followed them up the wash -- so
he was about 10 minutes behind us, but we didn't know it. Right when we
got to the last downhill before heading to the green gate a group of
motorcycle and quad riders caught up with us. They knew what we pulling
but decided that they didn't want to wait. One of them fell off their
motorcycle right in front of Wayne, another buzzed by me at the
beginning of the downhill. Steve was to pre-occupied keeping his Truck
as level as possible that he didn't notice the one that went careening
off the hill (through the brush and cactus) on the right side of the
trail. Two more raced down the trail and almost ended up riding on top
of the SUV instead of their dirt bikes. I don't think any of them were
seriously hurt from their little mishaps. By the time we reached the
gate, Charlies Blazer was starting to run a bit warm. Pulling the SUV
down the hard dirt and rock trail had totally flattened it and the frame
and body were just about ready to break in two. We emptied Scott's truck
and dumped the engine on top of the frame. About then Len showed up at
the gate. We took a couple of group pictures and called it a day. It
took approximately 3 hours to pull the SUV from the second cove to the
gate.
Thanks to all who came out to help and just to watch. It wasn't the most
exciting 4x4 trip, but it was entertaining.

You can get great interest rates that way.

Dealerships do that all the time, they think they can get you
financed, get you into the vehicle and out of your trade in then
suddenly you get a call saying the interest will be higher.Since you
are in the vehicle allready and your trade gone you will just go
ahead with the higher interest rate. This happened with someone I
worked with. The next day the interest went from 12% to 23% he was
allready in the veh. and his trade was gone. This from a dealership!
The thing we couldnt believe is he agreed to it! Don

Just wanted to say thanks to a couple of you out there that answered my request on the 3" AAL lift. We finished my son's 95 YJ this morning. He has a 1" BL with 1.5" shackles and now a little over 2" more with the 3" AAL from ORU. The work was a blast, only problem was ORU gave us the wrong spring pack bolts, but said they would take care of us. After a short drive, we decided to do a transfer case lowering. Is that a word? We had major vibes! Now all is ok, just need an alignment. He has about $180.00 in the lift so far.

Subject: Looking for a Jeep (One more post)
Hi All,
I lost the deal on my `98 XJ yesterday after three weeks of driving
it. Lousy dealership! Now looking for a different Jeep. I haven't got
a clue as to who might be honest enough to do business with and I'm
looking for suggestions and or referrals. Needless to say I'm a
little gun shy regarding dealerships right now but I'm willing to do
business with the right person.
My ideal jeep to start would be a stock 1997 Sport or Sahara w/hard
top.
Thanks,
Brian

Brian,
Someone posted a late model Jeep sport (yellow) for sale... have you
considered purchasing a used Jeep from a private seller?
It might be a better deal (in my experience, it usually is).

Hi Joe,
That would be preferable but I am not quite ready financially yet.

Go ahead and buy from the dealerships. But do you financing through someone

Don

Go ahead and buy from the dealerships. But do you financing through someone
else...like a credit union or http://www.peoplefirst.com
You can get great interest rates that way.

Subject: lift
Just wanted to say thanks to a couple of you out there that answered my request on the 3" AAL lift. We finished my son's 95 YJ this morning. He has a 1" BL with 1.5" shackles and now a little over 2" more with the 3" AAL from ORU. The work was a blast, only problem was ORU gave us the wrong spring pack bolts, but said they would take care of us. After a short drive, we decided to do a transfer case lowering. Is that a word? We had major vibes! Now all is ok, just need an alignment. He has about $180.00 in the lift so far.
