View Full Version : Advice on Hot Screw

Been struggling since almost day on with my Jeeps Y pipe where the Y fits to the exhaust header. I cannot keep the bolts screwed up in there. I have tried the hi-temp thread lockers but the best I can find is a Lock-tite that is only good for 450 degrees. After a while it cooks out and sooner or later a bolt falls out.

It has been recommended to me that I do a thick wrap of teflon tape around the threads and that will hold them in there.

What say you??

Look at the Resbond 907GF. Not sure if this will help, I haven't actually used it myself but hear it is good stuff.

Heh, I saw "hot screw" and was all excited, then quickly let down. :D

Am not aware of any material you could use that will withstand the heat... I've had pretty good luck with making my own self-locking fasteners for those pesky manifold fasteners that seem to want to loosen frequently, by "chisel checking" the threads.

To do this, lay the fastener on a block of hard wood, then smack it with a hammer on the threads, (or use a dull chisel with the cutting edge laying axially on the threads). Your goal is to upset the threads in a small area, but not enough to make the fastener bind hard while threading it into the internal threads of the manifold.

When it's done right, it should take something like 4-8 ft-lb of torque to screw the fastener in before it begins to clamp the joint tight. If you make it too tight, it will gall the threads, and damage them to the point it will be impossible to thread into the hole. If done right, this will provide the mechanical internal friction/locking that is required to keep it from vibrating/backing out again...;)

Good Luck ;)

Fixed it...

Can you fit a jam nut on either side of the flange? That's fireproof and reversable.

Exactly! Now Don; I have to call you on this one. You deleted my post because of the title of the thread. Is your title here family oriented? I see James T. has no comments when it comes to your posts. Talk about "targeting".

There is just no substitute for a good hammer:D :D That is called the "beat it into submission" approach.

thanks all:)

My buddy is an ex-aircraft mechanic. He says to drill the bolt and use safety wire.

I have mine double-nutted. Haven't had them come loose since.

There are specially treated bolts for use in exhaust manifold and closely proximal areas. Anything else just turns to junk and breaks at the earliest and least opportune time (don't ask me how I know)
If you're using a header, go to the parts house and get the right locking nuts and bolts (not nylock, but actual lock nuts). They'll typically come in a collector flange kit. Or you can get a hold of ARP fasteners and get them from the source :)
Double nutting is a good idea, as long as you use the right materials. Otherwise they'll rust together, and the expansion and contraction cycles will make the bolt VERY brittle and then you're at the beginning of my post again :)

Give it a rest, seems all you do is change topic on everyones thread with your Drama. It's getting old.

Yes I use the OEM bolts specifically for this purpose or they would crack like a window hit by a baseball.

I think I will use the dented thread approach. They are very diffcult to get to and this unique Y pipe set up with it 3 cats is to only be found on the 03-04 TJs to the best of my knowledge.

And what was the title of your thread again????
"Is Shnipe really gay? "

And WHAT did I tell you?
"Eric,
It was the title of it, yes I knew you were just kidding, I am sure.?

With as many folks as we have on this board my guess is we have a "gay" or two. Now I am as non-PC as they come, but I don't want some JEEPER feeling he can't Jeep because he is gay and keeps it to him/her self.

Do you understand where I am coming from on this. Had you used a less possibly offensive title for the thread, I would have passed it by."

I guess the cut and paste on your computer doesn't work real well today:D Oh the drama of it all:rolleyes:

I asked if your title was family oriented; didn't I? You like to single me out; well two can play this game. See if your title falls into the guidelines set forth by Joe West. http://virtualjeepclub.com/showthread.php?t=14587

You want to be a moderator and sensor my posts? Go for it. I'll hit you right back with more BS! You are the king of BS afterall.

You're worried about offending gay members? BS!!! Do you think I was born yesterday? Just read back through your derogatory threads and posts singling out Democrats, Liberals and who was it that deserved to be pushed out of a flying helicopter to name a few.
