So, im going to need to go EFI at some point relatively soon on my cj. What im wondering is, what is my best option? Should i get the howell kit to convert mine (its the 258)? Should i consider a TBI 350 swap? 4.3 chevy? Propane? What will be the easiest and most cost effective? Cost is especially important! The "plan" is is for 36-38's and possibly d44s.

I just did the Howell. About $1300.00 for parts and I did the labor. It took me about 5 hrs. Runs Great !!

5 hours doesnt sound too bad. How much know-how is required for this kit? Im no expert, but if it gives good directions then hopefully i can figure it out. Im also wondering if this is the best idea in the long run (staying with the 258) If it can suffice id like to keep mine cause it was rebuilt about 4k miles ago.

I did the Howell kit some years ago...actually a friend who owned a NAPA shop did the work. One of the best mods I've done.
You could also swap in a complete FI 4.0 for about the same price.
Mike - how did you tune yours? I need mine tuned for performance but don't have any diagnostics tools.

Mine came from howell with the chip in it already for my set up. I just installed it and runs great. I think you need a new chip(prom) custom made for any upgrades. You can give howell a call for a new prom.

Great directions. I'm just a parts guy and if I can do it anybody can.

Mine was installed with the offroad package when I lived in Oregon where I didn't need emissions testing. Since moving here, I had Hopper's install the emissions upgrade which came with a new chip. I thought there were methods to "tune" it but maybe not, short of new plugs. It doesn't run bad, it just seems like it could run 'better' :)
It could probably use new jets and I am going to swap in the GM distributer soon and that will certainly help.

About $1300.00 for parts and I did the labor. You could have bought an EFI engine and rebuilt it for that much money

Yeah this is kind of what i suspected, which is why i was wondering if it was the best route. I hear the 4.0 can be had for pretty cheap, but how difficult will it be to install in a cj7?
Todd's done quite a few 4.0L swaps..
