Ross,

I had a few moments to talk to Chris... and he's not just a good kid; he's a
great kid.
You should be proud of him... he drives as good as any of us, he is
courteous on the trail
and is always helping out when help is needed. You've done a great job with
him; you should be very
proud.

Not too far from there, there is Gardner Canyon and Madera Canyon Roads off of Highway 83. All along highway 83 between I-10 and Sonoita there are numerous trails some easy some very arduous. Once in Sonoita if you turn towards Patagonia there are even more trails. I am planning on hitting some of these area on Saturday. This area is also the area I would like to organize a meet in late March. A two night three day camping and trail trip.

Try AZ 4x4 Recycler in Phx. Sorry I don't have their #'s but from the last time I check they are running about $185/ea.

Anyone know of a local (in AZ) place to get axles for a D-30 with
the 297 u-joints?
Have one of my boots on my CV joint cracked and am thinking of
putting U-jointed axles in and keeping the CV jointed axles as
trail spares.
This is on a '96 ZJ.
There is a place in CA that sells them but I am kinda funny about
liking to keep my money it the state/city. It just may come back
to me sometime.

Joe,

We (my wife and I) first met Chris this spring when running a trail with
Ross and Deb and a few other local Jeepers (Roger, Dion, and I can't
remember the other person). He made such an impression on my wife that she
made a comment something like "when he gets a little older, I think he would
make a pretty good son-in-law" (or something along those lines). Yep, Chris
is a pretty good kid....and imagine....having Ross as a father.....go
figure! LOL!!!!

Subject: Re: CJ-7 Lift or SOA

Hi Randall,

My YJ has ran both SUA w/ 35's and SOA w/ 35's. IMHO an SUA lift is a good
training ground for an eventual SOA. You get the lift along with stability
of an SOA setup. Wheeling performance is greatly improved due to ground
clearance and most kits springs can be slightly modified to flex very well.
Later down the road as fabrication and mechanical skills improve an SOA can
be performed (make sure you keep those stock springs). SOA definitely
introduced steering issues...and to solve them correctly requires lots of
work. (http://members.home.net/stevenjmeyer1/steering_linkage/)

Of course...on the other hand... it is a "ground up"... so you got plenty of
time!

Regards,
Steve

I think Sunday would work best for me as long as it is not too early.

Anyone else interested in a run this Sunday? Nothing to challenging,
maybe FR42. I still haven't been out to test the new control arms.

I need a front Dana 30 housing for a 98 TJ. I crunched (totally
mangled) the right lower control arm bracket, and can't find the
brackets sold wothout the entire axle housing.
If you have one or know where I can get one, please call me at 480-

thanks -- Gary

Subject: cold feet?

Hi Gang,
My rig runs really cold in winter, it takes a good 20 minutes of highway
driving to get the needle up off the bottom of the scale, and the heater
still doesn't get warm. Apparently it's a common problem for this
model. Other owners of the same model cover up about 2/3 of the radiator
with ply wood and say it helps the engine run better and makes the heater
work properly. Is it really ok to do this? I'm going to give it a try and
see how the heat gauge looks this week, I was just wondering what the
prevailing opinion was..... do other people do this with their rigs?

Thanks,

Subject: Re: CJ-7 Lift or SOA

Randall,

Yes, I am happy runing the SUA set-up. Sure, there are times I
wish I had a SOA set-up because either I would have more lift or
I would have more flex. But, in my case, my Jeep is a daily
driver so I need it to remain "streetable". I do have enough
lift to run 35's so that's pretty decent. I also have enough
flex for 95% of the obstacles on the trails I run. I typically
run trails like FR42, tin Can Alley, Terminator, Predator,
Martinez Canyon, etc. And I get through them all pretty easily.

You are correct that there are steering issues with an SOA set-up.
They can all be dealt with but it obviously takes more work and/or
money. The two main issues are clearance and geometry. The clearance
issue manifests itself as contact between the drag link and the leaf
springs. When you move the springs on top of the axle, the drag
link ends up below the leaf spring and, depending on your springs and
axle, this can cause the drag link and spring to contact each other
and bind up.

The geometry issue is basically bump-steer. But this is an issue
with any tall lift - not just SOA's.

Both of these issues can be resolved by going to a high-steer set-up
which moves the drag link above the leaf spring. This eliminates
contact between the drag link and leaf spring, and it makes the drag
link parallel to the axle eliminating bump steer. How easy it is
to switch to a high-steer set-up depends on which axle you have,
what aftermarket parts are available and/or how good you are at
fabricating.

You'll also want to address spring wrap (aka axle wrap). This is a
problem that causes wheel hop making it difficult to get over certain
obstacles. It also leads to shorter spring life. The typical solution
is some sort of traction bar.

Note that although I don't have a SOA set-up myself, I have three
friends with SOA set-ups so I've witnessed firsthand the process of
doing the SOA conversion and subsequent tweaking that seems to be
necessary.
