I didn't think so.

Imagine Sedona without Broken Arrow.......get that ugly thought in ur head and see if you could really deal with that.

!!!!Check the Land Use!!!!

We CAN"T let this happen.

If anyone can attend the meeting please do. If anyone from Phoenix is going I wanna go and will chip in (I don't trust my truck to make it).

Yeah, if it was closed Markos & John wouldn't have their own thread on being *****e$ on the trail.

So besides keeping the trail open for wheeling, we need to keep it open so we can have more Markos & John threads.

lol.....

but for the ones who might not know Broken Arrow is a lot more than just wheeling hiking biking etc....it offers history of the land to the tourist, why it should be preserved (obvsiously building there shows no respect by the town itself) and takes a part in the economy of Sedona.

If this trail gets closed, I'll have to find a new place to find the "aura" and charge up my crystals:D

I really do love Sedona and it would be a shame to see this happen.

It is been so "used" as it is, I can't imagine why they would close it. I bet it has to do with the neighborhood you have to drive through. Has anyone noticed the no parking signs that have been put up along that street?

Damn, I saw this thread and the one in Land Use too late. I hope the users of this area, hikers, bikers, and wheelers alike all spoke up to keep the lands around Broken Arrow open, and wild. As beautiful as this area appears from the driver's seat, the entire basin and the Marg's Draw area is great to explore by foot or bike. To have truly "wild" lands so close to civilization is a treat.

If somehow we can get more warning prior to these meetings, I will be happy to attend. I have already written letters, but it is a short drive for me down to Sedona.

Doggone, I blew into town just a few hours late to make this meeting. If anyone there could post how things went down, I would be grateful. Thanks. I am sure that it was driven by the residents of the area who bought or built there knowing that BA was there already. Is it something like the folks who build near the airport and then complain about aircraft? I look forward to seeing a post. Thanks again.

As troublesome as the Pink Jeeps and Jeep tour overpopulation can be, they are the biggest thing to save that trail. No doubt that brings a great amount of tourism. I go down there all the time and there are TONS of commercial Jeeps. I will do what I can to help keep it open, but I have a very hard time the Pink Jeep Tours would roll over and let it get ruined. I have seen that trail on the Travel Channel on some show with Samantha Brown. Its very famous, I got my Jeep pic in 4Wheel Drive & Sport Utility magazine and it was tkaen on Broken Arrow...definately one of the prettiest places in the state. And they want to build buildings there? Is that what they want?

I’d like to start this saying that if we want the odds on our side, this is the time to get the greenies in our pockets.

___In 1992 the water company had their permit rejected by the council due to visual impact. The main worry back then was that visualizing tank(s) from the road and from people’s window was unwelcome. As we all know, Sedona is know for it’s beauty and it is something the town is doing it’s best to keep. Last night’s attitude towards Sedona’s appearance seem to take a change as the council finally understood that wherever they put the tank(s) a lot of trade-offs will be involved. For all this time (which I find hard to believe) since the water company’s permit was rejected, the water company have been looking and finding appropriate locations in the city. With all the pressure the council had/has put on them, the main goal was (talking to the past as this seemed to take a change in further discussions) to minimize as much as possible the visual impact those big structures were going to cause, Let me describe first what those structures are….these tanks are about 32ft high in average….their diameter and height can be changed to fit and camouflage with the surroundings in most instances; the height can be matched to the trees or houses, and painted. Some locations to build them and maintain them are easy to access, some need a path created. These tanks have to be built on a precise altitude as they level each other and 100% rely on gravity.…So the company reviewed city locations but all would be visible and knowingly or assuming the council would again refuse such permit, they went off city limits and found the Broken Arrow location (on Forest Service land) that perfectly(described by them) fit the needs for the water infrastructure and demands the council had pressed upon them.
____Before I keep going on about Broken Arrow, why the need for a tank(s)? It’s not just about growth; part of the city is relying on 1 pipe to supply the water. If that fails entire communities will be affected. The new tank(s) with the new pipes will be able to strengthen and supply the infrastructure accordingly. That is why even upgrading in size other tanks would be of no help. You probably notice the (s) after tank. The water company says a 1,000,000 gallon tank is sufficient for now but installing 2 is cost effective and will eliminate the do-it-all-over-again process when the time comes for a bigger need which, mentioned by them, would probably be in 10 years. I almost forgot, the fire department has a tough time fighting just city fires ‘cause of that shortage so adding more water to the and a better routed infrastructure will lessen the time it takes to fight fire. For your information, the fire department fought a house fire that exceeded 3 times the capacity of one 100,000gallon tank. Had they had all the water on demand, it would have been less of a nightmare.
____Broken Arrow is the right altitude and supposedly would camouflage itself [from the city ya]; the water company acted it would be camouflaged as well from the tourist etc be we all know the BS that get’s thrown in there. The pipe would be dug where the SIERRA CLUB’s trail is at (another reason we can get the greenies on our side:eek: ) pass near the ‘sinkhole’(whatever that’s called) and the tanks would be built farther away. The tanks would be 16ft high to match the tree tops and painted (Forest Service mentioned even painted it will be shiny). They would widen the path 20ft to bring material in. Of course the water company assures everything would be put back to look the same other than a small pickup path for maintenance….BULL!!! Even the Forest Service after made sure everyone understood this is long process for re-vegetation if they plant trees (not fully grown), fully grown ones put back after will look like someone’s backyard (as she put it). The City Council is worried about this process, if Broken Arrow is affected, Sedona’s beauty is and the economy is too. So the Council showed more lenience in having the tanks in the city even though the locations chosen so far will make camouflaging them nearly impossible (other than the airport but that’s coming up hold on:D). And btw, they are only 1/3 in the process!!! The Forest Service, although not all real locations have 100% been examined, have already pre-accepted (sure seems though but they are more studies to do before it goes through) the water company’s proposal. Weird??? I think $$$ are involved, hey I even learned during the meeting that Pink Jeep leases the trail (Thanks to the owner for being there)!!!! Now other than the altitude and the camo thing why build on this side of town? So the pipe doesn’t have to cross the river as it’s not cost effective. One of the council members mentioned that on this particular case cost should be more put to the side for the values that this area bring to the residents, tourist and many others. Obviously the water company doesn’t care they just want to ‘build’ but all those years it seems the council was just too ‘tight’ on them. It was good to see the counsel showing signs of lenience on the camouflage issue to save this area and build elsewhere. Airport manager was there, said there was space on his grounds…only at the end did he speak again and mention he had a $¾ million grant (correct me if I’m wrong) for water project that could be used/negotiated with the water company if built on their grounds. This would cover the cost of digging under the river, but I bet the airport manager has payback $$$ in his mind. Personal I don’t care, build it there do your $ business whatever build as many tanks as you want, keep the fire chief happy but please don’t destroy the wilderness (Forest Service).
_____Now that the council is more willing at allowing an in town tank(s) we can act by pressuring the Forest Service to think three times about building on Forest land, sending more letters to the council we rather have an ugly tank in town than one on the wilderness, letting the water company know that WE SUPPORT the tanks BUT they should NOT be on the Forest Service AND getting those damn GREENIES (I think one showed up and mentioned about the Sierra trail)on OUR side!

I’m sure I missed a bunch of things as a crapload was spoken.

Thanks Frenchy. But I have the attention span of a gnat, do you have that in the cliff note version?:D

-tank(s) at Broken Arrow not only option
- they are only 1/3 into the process
-send letters to Forest service to decline permit to build
-send letters to city council accepting to build tank(s) in the city even if it looks ugly to save our wilderness
-send letter to water company to value that perticular area and build elsewhere even if not cost effective.
-tell water company to seriously consider negotiating with airport to build tanks on their ground if no other apropriate areas can be found.
-I squouch gnats with my two fingers:D
