I'm in the process of building an offroad trailer for towing behind my jeep... does anyone know the registration requirements for the state of arizona? I have searched the AZDOT website and haven't been able to come up with anything of value.
Here are some pics of the current build status:

I have done two others.
Must have tail lights. Someone said that under 8ft total does'nt but not sure on that. Need sie clearence, yellow towads the front and red towards the back but the side area on the tail light can work if it is a side facing bulb.
needs a License plate light. Safety chains. Prefer a welded in, or engraved in serial number but they can put a tag on it if not. Thats all the bits I remember

Hey AZLugs, I was just checking out your sig and avatar... I'm going to look into starting a Havasu Chapter of 4x4Him now that I've seen it. There are several of us that own Jeeps and othere 4x4's at church and love to fellowship in that way... What a ministry it could become!!!
Sorry for the hijack... As you were.

Good looking Job. Great looking welds. I can tell by the looks of your workmanship, the finished product will look just as good. Please post photos of the trailer when finished.

Not to hijack the thread but does it matter if you put the shackle on the leading or trailing side of the spring? Don

AZGARD,
One thing to make sure as I have run into this problem before, is to keep all records of your materails used. When I built my trailer, I had to have proof I owned or built it. I was kinda caught off guard as I had no idea. I ended up going back and making up my own recepit to get it too pass. They just need some kind of proof that you just didnt go off and take it from one's side yard.

Not sure if it really matters but the databook for the axle that I bought indicates that the shackles go in the rear. For what it's worth, I bought the axle at Auto Safety House here in Phoenix, it's good for 3500 lbs.

That is because people have taken stolen trailers and painted and remarked them and called the homemade to retitle them. Sad really

Of coarse it matters where the schackles are mounted. Just look at any of the older model cars, and they have them always mounted in the rear. Think about it. When the wheels hit something on the road, where does all the stress go? its like a pulling action on the axle to the frame.

Like the front end of a YJ
** Trailer frame looks like it will be very tough and have no problems with off road abuse. What size tires are you going to use? What kind of hich are you going to use?? Looks good :D

Do you have any experience off road towing with a pintel??
I 've heard that they allow to much twisting and are horriable on road because the trailer is to light for all the slop??? That a regular ball hitch is better???
I have seen some neat set-ups that allowed extra twist with a regular ball hitch.......
I have no experience with off road towing 1st hand, It was a direction that I thought about going awhile ago...... I got a bigger 4X4 and made a roof rack instead

It really depends on your version of "off road towing". I you are going to bump and bounce down some easy trails and 2" ball hitch and coupler will prolly suffice, but if you are taking it in the "RoughStuff", you will pop it off the pall eventualy. A ball hitch does not have much of an articulation angle.
Pintle would work but are kinda noisy on the road.
Do a google search for off road trailers and there are severl purpose built trailers and small tent trailers for jeeps with custom rotating sprung hitches on them, you could get a build idea from there
Other idea may be to make the coupler removable and swap in a pintle hook when you hit the trail, the vehicle would have a pintle hitch that has a 2" ball that the pintle top comes down on. If that does not make sense, I can try to find some pics of what I am trying to describe.

Made a little more progress on the trailer this weekend. I managed to get the suspension together, the welds ground, and a coat of primer on the beast... now it really is starting to look like a trailer.
