I just got some Hella model 500 driving lights for Christmas. What
is the best position to mount off road lights? The bumper, windshield
frame, or light bar above the roof? I am primarily concern with
improving overall visibility at "low range speed". I realize these
are more intended for long range visibility, which I am also
interested in. I'd like to here all opinions especially those backed
by experience.
Secondly, my TJ has the "small" alternator (no A/C)with the original
factory battery. Are these lights (55 watt H3 bulbs) going to give me
electrical problems?

I saved all of my stock control arms. Since they are only stamped metal it
is quite easy to remove the bushings from them. As a matter of fact, I had
NAPA press one of the stock ones into one of my RE arms this afternoon. So
far I've used three of the smaller upper control arm bushings. I need to
replace one of the lowers on the back.

Joey,
A winch can draw in excess of 400 amps. It draws this from the battery as
the alternator tries to trickle it back in. Thats why many Jeeps run dual
batteries so they have more winching capacity. At some point you have to
give the winching a break to recharge the batteries.
For normal operation of lights, CB's, ignition, headlamps, etc you should be
drawing off the alternator. If your alternator is too small you may start
draining the battery faster than the alternator can keep it charged. In that
scenario you want a larger output alternator that can provide the amount of
juice needed at any time.
For most of us that means we need at least a 100 amp alternator to get the
job done. Obviously bigger is indeed better.

I think you guys are thinking of the Optima's in the wrong way. Now I am
sure Joe will correct me if I am wrong but a battery should be used
mostly as a backup or supplement to your alternator. In other words if
your Alternator puts out 50 amps (just for numbers) and your lights +
winch + cb + whatever takes up 100 amps then your battery is going to
take up the slack. (if it can). That is where an Optima fits in.
However I would suggest you consider getting a higher output alternator
as well. I believe it possible to run a trail with your 150 watt x 4
plus rock lights plus AC plus radio plus whatever and drain your battery
even though your Jeep is running.

The uppers on the front radius arms use the stock bushings. The frame end of
the lowers use a cartridge joint and the axle ends of the lowers use a
larger bushing which I haven't compared yet. The uppers in the rear have
cartridge joints at both ends.
After John gets those lowers replaced we'll find out for sure. Mike, you
still have a shot at being right on 4 out of 6 bushings ;)

Subject: Re: Off road lights
Eddie,
If you run two of those lights you should be fine. Between the 2 you should only pull about 9 amps. Your altenator should cover that with no sweat. If you wan to run your lights with a slow speed mentality, I would mount them high. you get a better spread of your light. Imagine walking with your flashlight over you head.
All though you will want to be careful that you dont get glare from the hood or windsheild. A common trick from some of the hardcore guys (Were talkin Camel Trophy time here) is the build small sheilds to block the light from reflecting of the hood. The most common trick? Cutting up a coffe can, or useing a small plate at the base to block the light from the hood and windsheild. Or you could paint the hood flat black to dull the reflection. Thats why the hoods of the Camel Trophy Rovers are almost always black. All though doing that tends to upset the spouse and is not recomended.
With the lights high, you will get more coverage and if the lights are mounted above your line of sight, it will elimnate shadows.
If you were more into the speed of things, mounting them on the bumper is good becuase it helps to bring out the shadows, which can mean hidden holes and help bring out the bumps in the road.
Hope this helps...
Best Regards
john K
P.S. I have 13 extra lights between my 2 4x4s. Either I have alot of expeirence, or I need alot of professional help.

John,
I saved all of my stock control arms.

The frame end of

larger bushing which I haven't compared yet. The uppers in the rear have
cartridge joints at both ends.
After John gets those lowers replaced we'll find out for sure. Mike, you

I have a pure breed golden retriever and she is light golden. She is very well built and she loves kids. She is also only 1 year old and she is almost ready to breed. I would like to find a stud that is also a pure breed. Please email me if you have a pure breed male stud available and can help me when the time comes.
By the way, my Golden is a true Jeep lover and she loves to go 4-wheelin as much as I do. You can look at my pic gallery and see some pics of her.
Thanks,
Blaine

John,
I saved all of my stock control arms.
