I think you guys are thinking of the Optima's in the wrong way. Now I am
sure Joe will correct me if I am wrong but a battery should be used
mostly as a backup or supplement to your alternator. In other words if
your Alternator puts out 50 amps (just for numbers) and your lights +
winch + cb + whatever takes up 100 amps then your battery is going to
take up the slack. (if it can). That is where an Optima fits in.

However I would suggest you consider getting a higher output alternator
as well. I believe it possible to run a trail with your 150 watt x 4
plus rock lights plus AC plus radio plus whatever and drain your battery
even though your Jeep is running.

I got a pair of Hella model 500 driving lights. My fiance also got the clear

Anyone have feedback on the most effective position to mount them? Bumper,
windshield frame, or light bar? If mounted on the bumper are they legal for
highway use ( 55 watt H3 bulb) ?

Joey,

You bring up a good point that I think is sometimes overlooked.

Your battery is a storage device.....if you are draining it faster than you
are replenishing it, you will only have a limited amount of time before you
will be forced to reduce the drain and thus allow it to "charge" up again.
Installing a larger battery (or batteries) allows that time margin to
increase, but unless your alternator output is increased, you are only
running on borrowed time, so to speak.

Not in the long arm kit Linda, at least I don't think they do.

If you are thinking of a trackbar, check out the Skyjacker adjustable
one.

Subject: Re: Re: OPTIMA QUESTION

That's all true, however one must also take into account the "type" of
battery. The "normal" battery is considered a "starting" battery (such as
the Optima Red Top), and is not designed to be drawn much below about 3% of
it's capacity, such as during winching for even a few minutes. These types
of batteries will suffer a short life if drawn just a little low and then
recharged. The "deep cycle" type batteries (such as the Optima Yellow Top)
is designed to be drawn down much more than 3% of it's capacity and then
re-charged many times. That's why Optima will void the warranty on a Red Top
if it's used for winching, as most winches draw a lot of amps and will
quickly draw a battery down.
This brings up another point. Even if you don't have a winch, but have a
"heavy" battery draw( via say a lot of lights + a big amp, etc) , with an
alternator that can't output to match the draw, you have the same "problem"
as with a winch. If you draw the Red Top done much past ca 3% of it's
capacity, you'll really shorten the lift of the battery.

Cheers,
Fred

Yep! That was one of the questions I asked RE when I bought the kit from
them. I wanted all the replaceable bushings, heim joints to be
off-the-shelf stuff. RE sells them for retail dealership prices. With
the Darner or Earnhardt discount, they ought to be a little cheaper.

You mean RE came up with their own proprietary rubber bushing design for
the long arms? I don't think so! That would drive the cost of the kit up
too high and I doubt they have the expertise for that sort of thing.
