Chris,

Before you install the rack, I'd recommend you put a nice fresh coat of paint on it. The paint will help delay the rack's inevitable transformation into ferrous oxide.

yeah its the tailgate mounting style, and yeah I can see what you mean, it feels a little flimsy to hold 200lbs.
what ends up breaking? the actual hinge part? do they make heavier duty hinges?

Is that the rack that mounts to the tail gate or to the hitch? If it mounts to the tail gate, you will want to use some caution, I have no doubts that the rack will hold the listed weight, but I kow the tail gates themsleves can not, for very long. I have fixed ennough to know serious failure can happen. All though, I have noitced that the TJ tail gate is much stronger than the YJ gate.

I think they do make heavyduty hinges. But for the life of me, I cant remember were I saw them or who had them. They may help. It depends on the mounting style. Different racks mount a little diffrerent. I have seen the hinges fail, and in some cases, it starts to pull the sheet metal away from the tub and I have even had 2 where the brackets pulled thru the sheetmetal of the tail gate. All though, keep in mind, theses have only been YJ and CJs. The worst damage I have seen to the tail gate of TJ has just been some play and looseing of the hinges.
I think the racks are OK, I would just maybe load the sleeping bags back there instead of the cooler.. : ).

There you have it. Joe having said that means that leaving it in is the
way to go!

Just kidding. I could not resist. LOL.

If it were mine to do I would yank it out and bench fit the SYE. The
first time. I'd want to do this to learn more of how it works and upside
down with bad angles would be tough. But on my second install I probably
leave it in if possible.
Just my opinion.

Hint, hint, Mike....

and out as it did putting the SYE in. He was working by himself

is easier leaving it in. Yours will be done first James, so we can
decide what to do on mine ;)

Mike-
Where did you guys get your new driveshafts to go with your SYE's?
Did you order a custom from Tom Woods or is there some place local
that is more affordable and of similar quality?
I will be adding an SYE to my TJ in the next couple months (as soon
as I complete my axle swap) and would like to know for future
reference.

Thanks,
Les

I have the topo program, I like it but I am sure there are 20 other
"experts" on here that will tell you it sucks and you need something else.
however I would be glad to let you play with it, even make a copy if you
like. I am in Gilbert and will be out of town this weekend if you want to
borrow it during that time. Give me a call on my cell phone 602-284-0738

We are going to install the kits, then drive down to Dick's
Driveshaft in 4 hi and have them custom make one on site for us.
They are around $180-$200.

Subject: Re: Does anyone have Garmin's Topo! ?

National Geographic not Garmin makes TOPO!! Garmin has its own software
called Mapsource and it is the only software that will allow direct basemap
uploads. Most of the other software setups will allow waypoint and route
uploads only. I have been told that mapsource is not that good. I have
used TOPO! made by National Geographic and its good, basically its just the
USGS maps scanned in. You can get almost the same results from OziExplorer
but downloading the USGS maps for it can be a bit difficult and time
consuming. Another decent software out there is Topo USA 3.0 by Delorme. I
have used Topo USA 2.0 and found that a lot of the trails are either not on
it or are not correct. I just ordered Topo USA 3.0 on DVD, I've been told
that it has an option to add your own roads so that will be nice and that a
lot of the data has been upgraded. What I do when off-roading is connect
the my GPS to my laptop and let my passengers direct me by watching the
screen live update as we go. Works great especially while Geocaching.

I bought a Garmin ETREX Legend, and I want to try out Garmin's TOPO!
software before I but it.

Does anyone have it?

What do you think of it?

Has anyone in the club added the routes for the different trails?

TOPO! costs $100.00. That's fine, but if there is a better one that I
can download the topo maps to my Legend from, I'd be interested in
what everyone else has found. I heard that TOPO! is the only one that
downloads the topo maps to my Legend. Most of the software out there
allows me to upload/download ROUTES and waypoints, but no topo map
information. I thought I saw a separate software program that allows
me to indirectly load the topos, like National Geographic's Arizona
Topo at REI. Has anyone seen this?

Subject: LIFT HELP NEEDED

I need you guys to come thru for me on this one…….PLEASE.

I want to hit the coves to help with the pull this weekend but here's
my issue.

I'm installing a lift on the xj. A daystar 1¾ lift spaceer and a
new leaf in the rear. I got the front spacers in and all done with
no real issues, first wheel took alittle longer than the second but
it is my first lift experience. I thought it was pretty simple for
being my first time.

The 2 problem I've encountered is with the rear are following: After
disassembling the u-bolts and the nut that holds the pack together I
can't get them to separate enough to get the new, nicely arched leaf
into the pack. I was using jackstands and the whole bit, I simply
couldn't do it. It looked like w/o (imo) removing the leaf pack and
repacking it, it could not be done. This in itself isn't a big deal
(I don't think) except I couldn't break the hanger bolts as they are
quite big. Any insight on this???

The above was problem 1. Problem 2, is it also looks like I need to
extend the rear brake line. When I had the leaf ubolts off and axle
dropped, it appeared that given the degree of the new arch and the
tension already on the brake line at the dropped point that the line
is not going to be to short when all is done. Of course, this is
from an untrained eye and am relying on opinions/help from you all.
Does this sound right?

PLEASE….as I already have the front done and I really want to get to
the coves and help this weekend can someone(s) help me finish up
installing my Christmas gift. I'll supply the pizza and beverage of
choice.
Thanks,
Fergus

DAMN IT!!! Every 4x4 place I have called is closed untill after the
1st! It really pisses me off, I want RE upper adjust control arms,
Tera bushings for the lowers. I called ToyBox last week, left a
message, and no return call. Also called BigOffroad, same thing. I
did get a hold of Gorferitoffroad and ordered my 1" MM lift. $45
plus $9.50 shipping! Pretty good deal! Also got a hold of ORU to
see if they had any bushings, nope, have to order from Teraflex, and
they are closed till the 2nd.....

Oh well, guess they don't want my money.....;)

Can't say I do much rockcrawling, not even in the TJ. Can't stand it myself
I'm more into sand and desert running. I'll see if I can find the dyno
sheet again if you really want the torque numbers as I don't remember them
right off the bat. How much you think that ultimate TJ is going to run
anyway? I bet it clears 50K easy when done.

Nice 90K ride, if I was to spend that much I'd of got a Cummins turbo
diesel.

DAMN IT!!! Every 4x4 place I have called is closed untill after the
1st! It really pisses me off, I want RE upper adjust control arms, Tera
bushings for the lowers. I called ToyBox last week, left a message, and
no return call. Also called BigOffroad, same thing. I did get a hold
of Gorferitoffroad and ordered my 1" MM lift. $45 plus $9.50 shipping!
Pretty good deal! Also got a hold of ORU to see if they had any
bushings, nope, have to order from Teraflex, and they are closed till
the 2nd.....

Oh well, guess they don't want my money.....;)
