Ok, so I got board and decided to make a winch plate for my new BullDog 9500 winch that I won at the Airpark Jeep Jamboree.

So I went and bought a piece of 1/4 inch steel 3' x 4' (heavy bish!!)

Drew a plan on my trusty white board

Then commenced to laying out and cutting. This was the hard part. Cutting 1/4" with a sawzall sucks!!

Welded on the lip that hangs over the front of the floor

http://www.virtualjeepclub.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=8174&stc=1&d=1163109919

Welded and ground down the front side

Welded up the farlead mount

Then I drilled all the holes and mached it up

Then I painted and mounted it in the heep

Then started on the tail gate. Cut out the opening then welded in 18 guage to make it pretty

Then made my new switch plate and in cab controller for the rear winch

And welded on some tabs for the line to mount to the axle

And heres a rear view. Still needs paint

All in all a fun and simple project (cutting aside) got about 8 hours into it.

I don't understand the purpose of the suck down winch. Can someone explain when and why this would be used?

The winch plate looks great. Nice work and clean install.

Primarily, to get in the garage(j k :D ). With 42s I won't fit in. But the reason on the trail is to change your center of gravity. If you are in a off camber situation you can pull the body down and not let the suspension unload. Second if you are going down a steep decline it can help as well. Or, it is cool to say that I got a winch in the rear. :D

Or Miner's Revenge forward...

The ability to force weight over one or other axles is almost mandatory for extreme trails. It matters much less on the little stuff. Jeff's set up for the good trails.

Lockers! Lockers! Lockers! Lockers!

Does it help to also "suckdown" the front end with the winch?

For steep ascents yes it does help in the front it keeps the suspension from unloading and putting you in a more tippy spot. A lot of the buggies use them in both front and rear, most are front. I will do the front next, but have some design contraints I have to work around first.

Kool, now you can rescue two jeeps at the same time!

btw do you have a better pic of how it is mounted to the tub? Is it partially bolted down to the frame or what?

Looks great as usual Jeff. So when are you getting the lockers in? You'll be the only Jeep on the trail with front/rear suck down winches and open diffs with 4.10's... :)

Its bolted to the frame crossmember via grade 8 bolts. I also added a second crossmember at the rear of the jeep and is bolted to that as well. Ill get some more pics later on

I was going to do something very similar, Exect I have a proble I triangulated the front uppers and the arms are in the way. I have to stare at it a while to figure out what to do. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated

Nice work! I know you gave your sawsall a workout. I wish I could weld 1/4". Great project.

Where on the front axle do your upper arms meet? How high above the tube?
