Ruger Mini-14 Ranch rifle with a laminated wood stock.
Flourescent Coleman lantern for camping.
16" scroll saw.

No Jeep stuff. :( although the rifle and lantern will be in the
jeep sometimes.

Tim,
I am in Tucson also and have done a little knocking about in that
area. Would like to get together sometime for a trip or two. Have
an offroad tent trailer and we are always up for camping, work
schedules permitting.
Rosemont Junction area is where I usually go, I have heard that
the road over Gunsight Pass is washed out recently and you can't
go over it anymore. I didn't actually drive up there when we were
there to watch the Leonid meteor shower a few weeks ago.
Have laptop mounted in the jeep with OziExplorer and USGS topos
of most of SE 1/4 of AZ. Can document our explorations. Have you
been to the Onyx Cave? I see it on the map, have never been to it
although I have heard about it.
Looking forward to a trip,
Ralph

Hi Doug,
Changing the reply part of the message wouldn't mean that you can't reply
directly to the message poster, you'd still have that option by clicking on
the 'to' part of the message and choosing the sender. I think it's fair to
say that most of the people most of the time want to reply to the entire
group. It's easier to change it to the individual posters address for the
few times when you want to do so and will hopefully save most folks a bit
of trouble.

I've just now noticed that I didn't have to change the address to the
group, so I guess the list moderator must have changed it already......Thanks!

Doesn't work that way for me. Using Outlook Express (w/ the preview off),
when I hit reply to sender, it doesn't go the sender, but to the whole
group. To reply to the sender now, I have to save the person's addy in my
address book and go from there. Kind of a drag.

This, IMO, will lead to a lot more junk on the list. Before, it was a simple
matter of hitting "reply to all" when I wanted a note to go to the group.
Pretty simple. Now, we'll get all the e-mail. Not a good plan, IMO....

Just my 2 cents.

Hi Linda,
I've seen these things before in many different guises, some better than
others. A company called quadraflate used to make something similar, now a
bloke named Roger Brown is making something called 4air which is designed
specifically for 4wheeldrives. He offers a lot of custom deals and
accessories to tailor it to suit your needs, plus it only costs about half
what this one does. These types of charging manifolds can have good uses,
they can equalize tire pressure, save your *** if you air don one tire too
far, save time and effort etc..... I plan on building one myself, though if
I lived in the states I'd probably buy one...... The address is;

http://4crawler.cruiserpages.com/4x4/ForSale/4air.shtml

It's worth reading, it's a good write up. This guy runs a web page for 4
runners, but his page has a lot of great tips that can be applied to any
4x4. The basic site address is;

http://4crawler.cruiserpages.com/4Runner.shtml

You can spend literally hours reading at this site, there's so much info
there. I especially recommend clicking on 'cheap tricks' and '4x4 links'
each of which is a web page in it's own right. I've learned a lot of stuff
at this site, I also learned about tire siping and have since siped my own
(baja claws) with very satisfactory results.....

Subject: welding diff's?

I've read a lot of good write-ups on welding diff's for a sort of large
cumbersome spool. The result is a completely locked axle that can't be
unlocked. There's a good write up here;

http://www.alloffroad.com/issue/2000/october/contents/lincon_locker.htm

I've got Dana 44's front and rear, plus manual locking hubs, so I was
really thinking about welding my front diff. I can buy a spare for about
$50, so I'd probably buy the spare, weld that and then install it. Most of
my trouble offroading comes not from hill climbing, but getting stuck on
more or less level ground, in mud, in gravel, in rivers etc, so I think I'd
get quite a lot of benefit from a front locker. If I ever had trouble
going uphill I could always try it in reverse ;-) The cheapest locker
available over here is the lock-right, at about US$400 not including
installation. This makes a welded locker seem attractive.

I'd really love to hear from anyone who's done something like this (how
about you Linda?). Is the effect on steering *really* that bad when locked?

Thanks,

That's a good point, and one I hadn't really thought of. I'm subscribed to
a lot of newsgroups, about a half dozen and wading through the several
hundred messages each day takes up some of my time. I can't say that I've
noticed a worse noise to content ratio on any of the other groups, and they
all use the 'reply to all' as default. I wonder how many members are
reading and replying to mail using the yahoo page...... All the other
groups I am on use majordomo so they don't have a web interface.. FWIW,
there's a work around that I've found usable when you want to reply just to
the author (though it's hardly an elegant method); Choose 'Forward' and
when the box pops up it contains the sender's address in the body of the
text. Cut and copy to the 'in' field.

As an aside, I've found Eudora to be a friendlier easier to use mail
program than outlook.

Shaun, I welded my REAR diff almost a year ago....I'm not changing a thing.
Yes it chirps in the parking lot, and I probably get more wear, but the
handling is consistent, and there are no surprises. You get used to it, and
forget it. I would not weld the front, as it would greatly affect steering,
especially for a street ride. The back I don't notice unless I'm doing
tight corners in a parking lot.
Just keep an eye on the fluid, and while you have the cover off, look at the
welds. I had mine done by a pro, and no changes, in spite of many fairly
rough roads, not to mention the many street miles, which are probably harder
on the diff than anything off road.
Think it over carefully, it's a one-way decision.

Hi Michael,
Thanks for the reply, you made some good points..... I'd never thought it
would be possible to run a permanent locker in the rear full time while on
road! I'd heard it was a trail only type proposition. If I was going to
run a rear locker (which I hope to do sometime mid next year) then I think
I'll go with a detroit.

If you noticed in my message before I said that I have manual locking hubs
up, so with the hubs unlocked and in 2WD mode the front locker would be
taken out of the equation and road handling should be normal (am I missing
something hear?). I'd only engage the hub locks off road. This could end
up being kind of a bummer in a way too..... in winter I like to leave my
hubs locked all the time so I don't have to get out of the cab to engage
them for snow or whatever. If I were to go with a welded locker (which I
think I will) then I'd have to lock and unlock them *every time*. That
said, what do you think the offroad handling would be like?

I plan on buying a second hand diff and welding that, so if it turns out
being a very bad think I can always just put my original diff back in and
have lost only $50 plus some of my time....
