Subject: SUV Pull is ON for Dec 29!!!!

Just want to let y'all know. Steve and I took a trip out there this
morning and the burned up SUV is still in the 2nd Cove. We hi-lifted the
rear to see if the axle would turn. We could not get it to pudge so I
doubt that putting tires on it will do much good. The roof is caved in.

Steve thinks that most of the hauling will need to be done with chain.
The engine hood needs to be cut off. The body needs to be flipped on its
roof.

We selected what we think is the easiest route. Two uphills, two
downhills. All are relativley easy slopes (lot of moguls of course .. we
can't make it too easy) and there's a lot of soft sand trail to drag the
SUV through.

The 2nd cove is in pretty bad shape. We didn't go to the first cove, but
it is probably even more trashed. The area inside the green gate is
really bad.

Hope to see you out there!

December 29. Meet by the green gate at Butcher Jones Rec Area at 8:30am.
Get on the trail by 9:00am. Hopefully get the SUV out before sundown.
The second cove is a long way from the green gate!

PS. If you want to try tires, the SUV is a mid-80s Pathfinder, 6-bolt
wheels and will most likely require metric lug nuts.

Subject: [TR] Trip Report - Gila Monster - Saturday, December 22, 2001

Hello All,

Joey Kulich lead a trail run Saturday, December 22, 2001 across Gila Monster

WOOooo HOOooo! What a blast and a challenge.

Only four vehicles showed up. Scott Maiden (soon to get more iron) in a YJ, Chris Villarreal in his capable Samari, Another Samari sorry forgot the name and Me in my YJ. I showed up right on time as always. :) When I got there the hood was up on one of the Samari's. Seems the alternator was not producing. Already some carnage and we weren't off the pavement yet. He wisely sat this one out while he had a tow on the way.

We waited for any stragglers, none showed so we headed out. We got to the dirt road and Chris unloaded his from the trailer while Scott and I aired down.

Gila Monster was great. With the three of us there was no hurry and we all got to play and experiment with different lines. Watching Chris wheel the Samari was quite impressive. It is locked f/r with 33x15.50s and is up there in lift. He was able to follow Scott on the harder lines with less difficulty.

We finished up GM and headed over to Cheap Trick. CT is a shorter trail but with a bit harder obstacles and a very decent waterfall (4.5) you have to climb. I foolishly gave it a go. Almost. I tried a couple of different angles but being open I just could not get it. Scott was next and was very entertaining. As he was climbing when the rear slipped down and his jeep came back down on it's left rear corner. OUCH! After that the front just would not pull him over. We hooked up the human winch and he made it over just fine.
Of course Chris had to show off the shorter wheel base and just motored right over. This waterfall is a tough one. Front and rear lockers are required to negotiate it.

In all Scott and I both took a strap while playing on optional obstacles and Chris made them look easy.

Stay tuned for links to photos.

Thanks all for showing up and making this a memorable run.

John,

It takes a 20 ton press to install the new ones. To remove them I have just
burned out the bushing in the past and then cut a line on the inside of the
metal part and it will pull right out. Next time I will just go ahead and
have them pressed out. I usually take it to a local NAPA with machine shop.

Joey,

Sounds like fun! I was able to crawl right up that waterfall on Cheap Trick but had to pull the other two Jeeps up it that were with me (I won't name them, they know who they are). If you think going up is tough, you should try coming down. All 3 of us got damage coming down the day I did it.

Could be the seal where the sending unit/float go in to the tank. I would guess this to be the most likely. Could be any number of things. Start with the connections to the evap canister, vents, and filler lines. Then move to sending unit seal if necessary.

to get it out and clear the transaxle.

Dave I just completed my SOA here are some links that Scott Maiden sent me
before I started mine. I used a 2 1/2" Rancho rear springs all the way
around. With these I can fit my new 35's with no rubbing on stuff and the
SOA flex a lot. I also have a shackle reversal. I used a drop pitman arm
(which I already had installed from the previous lift) and I just got my
drop drag link form a company in CA. With both I have no bump steer and the
steering does not rub on the spring. The over the top steering a couple of
companies are making kits now but they are very pricey and not required
right away if ever. If I can be of any help let me know. Jim F.

Does anyone know if the factory valve cover from a 4.0L engine will fit onto
