Hi Everyone,

Scott Kruize and myself decided to run Mud Springs or go to the top of Four
Peaks to see if there is any snow up there. If anyone is interested in
going along... please send me an email. We won't be leaving for a couple of
hours... we want to do a nice comfortable snow or scenic run.

Subject: Re: diesel starting problem solved

The Cummins diesel engines use a heating grid instead of glow plugs. The
heating grid tends to have a longer life, but it's hard to say! We have
a Nissan 3.3l TD in the barn with over 250,000 miles on the original
glow plugs. So lifetime is relative.

Here's a book that might help you out.
"Diesel Mechanics, Second Edition" by Erich J. Schulz, ISBN
0-07-055639-3
This is basically a trade school text book and is pretty detailed. The
copy we have does not go into heating grids or electronic fuel injection
systems. There is probably an updated edition available.

I found out last night what 33 MT's and a traclok on snow over ice roads is like! The wife and I went to Show Low to see Harry Potter and do some more shopping. When we got ready to leave for Heber/Overgaard it was snowing a little bit. More ice crystals than anything.
I couldn't go very far without the jeep breaking loose and going sideways. Not just one wheel would spin, but both. I have traclok, and on snow or ice, both rear wheels break loose at about the same time. With the wide tires, 33x12.5 BFG mt's, I don't have as good of traction on plowed roads,(snow over ice or snow/ice pack), as I did with the 31x 10.5 AT's, (MHO), So, I put the jeep in 4x4 HI and after that she did just fine. I don't think I spun a tire on the 38 mile drive back to the H/O area.
I think in deep fresh snow the tires would do a lot better.

of course I only see snow when I go up north. I usually stay here in the warm(comparatively now) desert like God intended. I get cold just seeing snow on TV.

Your right Michael, the key is 4x high. I run all over in my Dodge pickup with AT's and 2 wheel drive. I think the problem is the jeep is so light! I have been in deep snow, up to 2 feet of fairly fresh snow and still going with the jeep in 4 low. I am by far an experienced snow driver having lived up here and worked and driven in it every year for the last 30 years.
I guess my main point was that with a light jeep and 33x 12.5 MT's and a traklok or locker, you don't want to try to drive down a plowed snow over ice road in 2 wheel drive.

Went to Prescott this last weekend...had great fun with the winter storm
blowing through. It's been a long time since I have played in the snow.

Woke up the next morning and fired up the TJ....and then comes the
distinctive smell of antifreeze. Inspection revealed what appears to be a
very small leak at the brass/plastic interface.

I'm thinking this must be a common problem with new half plastic/half brass
radiators...anybody have this happen?

Next step is to purchase a fully brass unit. Where's the best place to go?

Where is axle alley? I have interest. Never been on a trail run with any
of the club before or done anything really rough. Have driven up Martinez
Canyon as far as Silver Bell mine without trouble. (scraped read diff hard)
I'm not sure what to expect, don't want to intentionally break something. I
read about runs with descriptions of the all the broken parts and I think I
read where some of you guys carry spare axles. That's probably over my
head.

I've got a pretty strong CJ-7, but not too flexy. Sway bar disconnects is
about it. I've got lockers, the winch, 2.5" of lift, and 33" BFG mudders.
I'd love to come. Can you tell me a little about the trail?

I think if you havent had much experience, and your rig isnt too flexy you
might stay away from axle alley... Especially if you dont want any broken
parts or body damage. Its a real fun trail, but remember, you gotta pay to
play. It is likely you will need a winch, and when your sitting on 33's you
might hit a few more rocks, that those who would run a 35-38" tire.
