This is my first bumper build and I hate it, but Before I condemn it I thought I would put it out there as a poll to get a public opinion. I started all this with the rear quarter panel mod and realized I needed something to protect the bottom of the panel now. I tried to condense the photos to conserve space. Check it out!

The bumper build started with fab’in some mounting brackets to fit into the factory bolt holes. I cut down some scrap pieces of plate I had laying around and then welded a piece of scrap 2x2x .120 wall I had left over from the rock slider build.

You should always have a good set of plans for your builds, and besides…. What else is all that junk mail good for.

I got a scrap piece from the steel store of 2x6 stock and cut it, then sealed up the edges.

And there you have it a perfectly good bumper, right? Oh you would think so…. But no, I had to let the artist out in me a screw it all up. I thought it was to bland and needed some depth, and I had some left over 1.5x1.5 so I build a point.

I cover it with 1/8” diamond plate and told myself it was a step to get up on the roof rack.

Here is the finished product…. All $20 of it….. I hate the point, but I’ll leave it on there till the paint gets all tore up and then grind it off and put something else there

What does our public poll say?

Looks good. I like the point personaly. But then again I am the kind of guy that can find beauty in function. You can rest alot of beverages on that bad boy so that a major bonus.

It's cool, loose the point and add some D rings.

Keep the step! That'll keep cars from riding on your arse:D
Oh, and have a sticker pointing towards it "I brake check!"

Agree with the majority. Lose the step and weld on some D rings. Otherwise looks awesome

My opinion, if your gonna weld on D-Ring mounts at least attach the bumper through the uni-rails.. the 4 bolts holding it on now are attached to 1/8th inch sheetmetal.. on yank and off goes the bumper... use the nutstrips in the rails and run a piece of strap welded to the bumper to the nut-strips..

ps.. nice work.. personally not my style.. as long as your happy!!
who cares what everyone else thinks.. :D

Id loose the step and design something close to the Hanson rear bumper with your own artistist ways. Youd be able to make more depth for a step and still incorperate some drings.

I kind of like it too. Does it work for reaching up on your rack ? A stool/chair for lunch time ?

How about departure angles though ? You could always keep it until you tear it off on a rock :D

How is the rocker guard secured behind the tire? Could this bend up into the body?

To me the bumper is to tall, and you'll get hung up where the rocker slider meets the bumper........ they "should" be the same height.

Is the whole bumper attached with only those 8 bolts:eek:

Thanks for the response! The bumper is held on by those 8 bolts, yes, plus 4 long 3/8 bolts that run through the unibody "frame" rail with a piece of 1/4" plate on either side. The entire assembly only weighs 68 lbs. this is more then enough to hold it in place. As far as the sliders getting up into the body..... Well the way I see it is if I am into rocks that big, The body would get dented anyway. With or without them. Battle scars are cool!:D

Not if the sliders is in the right spot :D

The areas above my sliders and behind my exo are the only straight places...I still have enough battle scars to make a crushed can jelous

Wow all that for $20 bucks, Where did you get all the materials to fab the bumper. I would like to make one for my TJ instead of spending like 500 bucks for one with a tire carrier. Please let me know how you made it so cheep...

i dont know now that ive looked at it more i must say the step is growing on me and i like it so next time someone is behind you at a ligjht and decides it would be funny to give you a "love bump" you can laugh at them because that looks like it could do osme real damage

You can buy scrap for $0.40 a lb at most of the steel yards. I buy from Valley steel supply around 75th ave. and Grand. I found the main piece (2x6x.095) in a pile and I think it was around 40 lbs. I went back last week and there is 10-12 more 7' 2x6's left.... but they are way in the back behind one of the out building and hard to find. this last piece i bought, which I am hoping to get both front and rear bumpers for project ex-jay, was 37 lbs. or $14.80. Glendale steel supply,59th ave and Bethany Home, has a huge pile in back also.
